Even on a late Friday morning in the off-season, this iconic establishment was hustling and bustling, and after we took our first bites of our food and chosen pie slices, it’s not hard to see why so many travel far and wide to get in on this experience. And if the pie options and classic atmosphere weren’t enough, you can look out the window and raise your fork full of goodness up to Lake Superior; the view is fantastic!

On a girl’s trip up to Grand Marais our little troop of gals stopped by Betty’s Pies for a bite to eat before the big trek up Scenic Highway 61. Although the wait was unexpected (worth it!), the fantastic flavors of food and pie lived up to their Northwoods hype.

We were seated in what the hostess referred to as ‘the best seats in the house‘; the back part of the restaurant which is a separate room overlooking Lake Superior. There was a pleasant lake house vibe that wrapped us up in the warm natural light of the room while we sipped on our coffee and visited as our orders were being whipped up. Betty’s Pies has a wonderful classic diner atmosphere with friendly service and that Northwoods charm we know and love.

A Slice of Betty’s Pies History

Would you believe that Betty’s Pies was actually a Fish Shack at first? The humble beginnings of this Up North tradition began in the year 1957 with the vision, created by Betty’s Father Aleck, of providing a quaint place to grab a bite to eat for fishermen and women near the Stewart River.

Working with her Father, Betty put her magical cuisine in the bellies of anglers, and soon what started as a simple Fish Shack pit spot for donuts and coffee grew into a larger menu of food and delicious pies. By 1958 the shack was transformed into Betty’s Cafe and would one day blossom into the iconic Betty’s Pies we know and love.

The History of Bettyโ€™s Pies

1956

Bettyโ€™s father, Aleck, built a fish shack along the Stewart River on Highway 61. Betty served the fishermen donuts and coffee.

1958

Customers did not enjoy looking at dead fish while eating, so Bettyโ€™s Cafe was born, serving lunch, dinner and pie.

1974

As the restaurantโ€™s popularity grew, so did its pie menu. Betty changed the name to Bettyโ€™s Pies, and it became a traveler hotspot.

1984

After making thousands of pies and winning a worldwide fan club, Betty sold the cafe and retired.

1997

The relocation of Highway 61 threatened the cafeโ€™s closure. The restaurant was sold to current owners Carl Erlenz and Martha Sieber.

1998

The pies returned to their original recipes with help from Betty herself.

2000

Bettyโ€™s Pies received a fresh start in a new building. Two years later, the old building was torn down.

2015

Betty Lessard passed away on March 19, but Bettyโ€™s Pies continues to carry on her tradition.

2020

During the summer, approximately 700 pies were made every day, and Bettyโ€™s Pies began shipping pies nationwide.

The Buzz About Betty’s Pies

We love to hear from locals and travelers what they think of gems along beautiful Lake Superior, so let’s hear it right from the source!

“Picturesque little Cafe; we enjoyed our time there! The staff were friendly and attentive. All of the food was fresh and delicious. The pie was definitely worth it! We had the caramel crunch pie – absolutely superb!”

– Ashly S โญโญโญโญโญ

“Saw a sign making our way up the scenic highway and decided to give it a try. Glad we did! The place was crowded and the line was on the longer side, but it went pretty fast. The selection of pies was was amazing, coffee was flavorful, and the service was friendly and quick. We sat outside on a beautiful late summer day and enjoyed our pie. Food always tastes better when itโ€™s a place you just stumble upon.”

– Mike โญโญโญโญโญ

“Plenty of pie and non-pie options if you’re just wanting food. There are also shakes and drinks.

The host/servers are helpful in selecting options. I’d recommend going with traditional flavors/their recommendations.

We got a turtle coconut cream, great lakes, toffee cream, and five layer chocolate.

We liked all of them except for the toffee cream, it was too creamy. The best though is the great lakes, tasted a lot of flavors in that pie. Not too sweet and crunchy.

Highly recommend stopping by.”

– Azzam A โญโญโญโญโญ

“We have driven by plenty of time’s before, but the wait is over. Finally we got to try a World Famous slice of PIE! My wife had French Slik and I had Toffee whipped. They both were really good, but they have a ton more you can try also. Had breakfast also, Sara had an Omelet with hash brown’s and tried the French toast witch was amazing ๐Ÿ‘. You can get any meal for the day, so just not breakfast, lunch & dinner I believe ๐Ÿ˜‹. Don’t pass them up! We enjoyed it”
