“High on a hill overlooking the lake and town, with two decks and large windows, the Pilot House has the best views in all of Bayfield! Relax, sip a drink and take in the sailboats on the bay as the ferry goes back and forth to Madeline Island. Kick back and watch visitors walk the streets in town. The main harbor dock, the ferry, kayak rentals, cruise services, parks, trails, shops and restaurants are just a short walk away.”

Our Stay at The Pilot House B & B

The weekend after our wedding in October 2023, my newlywed Husband and I stayed at The Pilot House B & B in the Crow’s Nest suite. While looking at their website, we were hooked by the fantastic view from the Crow’s Nest room. And in person, that view did not disappoint!

I only have a few little things to say about this suite in particular, and they aren’t necessarily ‘bad’ things, just little quirks. If you have trouble walking up the stairs, I would recommend the Admiral’s Quarters instead of The Crow’s Nest because you do have to climb a set of stairs to get to the room. The room was well set up with lovely windows, a stunning view of Lake Superior, a comfy bed, TV, WiFi, and an awesome tub; the only things that were a bit quirky to figure out were the light switch situation. But with a few test clicks of the switches, we figured it all out! And the switches are neatly labeled.

My favorite thing about staying in the Crow’s Nest suite at The Pilot House B & B was hearing and watching the Ferry go on its daily trips. There was something so whimsical and romantic about hearing it take off, knowing there were eager passengers aboard, and watching the motions of Bayfield and the distant Madeline Island go through its beautiful waves.

It was also nice to know that we were a brisk walk away from the Ferry if we wanted to take a ride to check out Tom’s Burned Down Cafe or take a hike at Big Bay State Park on Madeline Island. Or if we wanted to check out all of the neat things to do in Bayfield.

You’re surrounded by adventure, relaxation, and fun opportunities!

My husband and I also had a quaint time hanging out in the living room area on Friday night. There’s an assortment of board games provided in the living room, we picked one and played by the fireplace, and we also had some nice reading time. All the while, another group of guests were playing games at the dining room table, and it was a nice feeling that both parties could be coexisting with ease and respect for each other while enjoying the space we were staying in.

There is a light breakfast that’s provided during the hours of 8-10 AM. We didn’t partake in the breakfast portion because we were out and about, but it’s nice to know that it was available if we wanted to check it out! Who doesn’t love the breakfast in Bed and Breakfast?

Each room has its own guest book where you and your fellow adventures can jot down what brought you to Bayfield or how your trip is going! It’s a treat to read through the guest book and see all of the different lives and stories that have passed through The Pilot House B & B.

This is a picture of our entry for one of the days we spent at The Pilot House B & B. My Husband, Matt, is an Artist, among many other admirable things, and I am an Author, so we thought we’d add a creative entry! He started by drawing a picture of me while I was reading, and I finished by writing a poem about being so close to Lake Superior and the beauty of Bayfield.

“The fog horn laces through sleepy ears,

Early risers and worn soles shuffle the piers.

Autumn’s breeze tickles the lightly frosted window,

Birds sing their good mornings and shake off the shadow.

There are little moments to be had and sealed,

Content memories await you when you go to Bayfield.”

– B.A. McRae

“We came to the Pilot House and stayed 6 days. Our room was spacious, clean, and very quiet. The Pilot House is an ideal location to the ferry, local restaurants and beautiful hikes. Jack was an informative and lively host! His recommendations for restaurants were spot on! We definitely will be back!”
