There’s so much great fishing in Lake Superior and nearby inland lakes, rivers, and creeks. With its vast area, varying depths, variety of fish species, and clean, cold water it’s ideal spot for anglers of all skill levels.
Fish Species in Lake Superior
Lake Superior is home to over 80 species of fish, including lake trout, salmon, trout, bass, pike, and walleye. Some of the fish species that you might catch while fishing in Lake Superior include:
- Lake trout
Lake trout are the largest and most sought-after fish in Lake Superior. They can grow to over 50 pounds and are known for their hard fighting ability. - Coho salmon
Coho salmon are another popular fish species in Lake Superior. They are typically smaller than lake trout, but they are also very hard fighting and provide excellent table fare. - King salmon (AKA Chinook Salmon)
King salmon are the largest of the Pacific salmon species found in Lake Superior. They are also the most difficult to catch, but they are highly prized by anglers. According to Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR), “The largest salmon is the Chinook Salmon, also called King salmon, which grows to over 10 pounds in Lake Superior, though most catches are around 3 to 4 pounds.” - Walleye
Walleye are a popular fish species for anglers of all skill levels. They are known for their excellent taste and are also relatively easy to catch. Like many folks around the Lake Superior area, walleye is my personal favorite for eating. - Muskellunge
Muskellunge are the largest freshwater predators in North America. They are also some of the most challenging fish to catch. Remember to measure them and consult the fishing regulations in your area before you decide to keep your catch! - Smallmouth Bass
Smallmouth bass thrive in Lake Superior’s rocky, clear waters. Known for their aggressive strikes and strong fights, they are a favorite among anglers. These hardy fish prefer shallow waters in spring for spawning and retreat to deeper, cooler waters in summer. Smallmouth bass are typically found near rocky structures, drop-offs, and underwater humps, offering anglers both a challenge and a rewarding catch. - Sturgeon
Sturgeon fish are known for their distinctive appearance, featuring elongated bodies covered in bony plates called scutes. These ancient creatures can grow to impressive sizes, with some individuals reaching lengths of over 7 feet and weighing hundreds of pounds.
