A fish cannot tell us its birthday, but its body keeps a surprisingly detailed record of the years it has lived.

Much like the rings inside a tree trunk, certain fish structures develop visible growth patterns over time. Fisheries biologists can examine these patterns to estimate a fish’s age (like the oldest fish ever recorded in the great lakes), reconstruct parts of its growth history and learn how an entire population is changing.

That information is especially valuable in a vast ecosystem like Lake Superior, where lake trout, lake whitefish, ciscoes, kiyi and other species may live for many years beneath the surface.

Why Does the Age of a Fish Matter?

Knowing the ages of fish within a population helps fisheries managers answer several important questions:

How quickly are the fish growing?

At what age do they begin reproducing?

How long do they normally live?

Are enough young fish surviving?

Is the population dominated by young fish, older fish or a healthy mixture?

Are fishing pressure, food availability or changing habitat conditions affecting growth?

According to Michigan State University Extension’s guide, Determining the Age of Fish, age information helps scientists understand fish growth, spawning, migration and changes in habitat use.

For Lake Superior, these questions are directly connected to decisions involving fishing regulations, stocking programs, harvest limits and the long-term recovery of native species.

The Great Lakes Fishery Commission’s Lake Superior Fish Age Assessment Workshop report explains that inaccurate age estimates can distort measurements of fish growth, maturity, survival and recruitment. Those errors can ultimately contribute to excessive harvest limits or unnecessary restrictions on fishing.

Fish Scales Can Work Like Tree Rings

Fish do not have birth certificates, but their scales, bones and otoliths (earstones) preserve growth rings that help scientists determine their age and monitor Lake Superior fish populations.

For many species, scientists can estimate age by examining the scales.

The original Michigan State University fish age guide (PDF) uses a bluegill as an example. Biologists typically remove several scales from a consistent location on the fish, often near the front edge of the dorsal fin.

Taking more than one scale is important because some may be replacement scales that formed after an earlier scale was lost or damaged. Replacement scales do not contain the fish’s complete growth history and may therefore produce an inaccurate age estimate.

The collected scales are cleaned, moistened and enlarged with specialized imaging equipment. Older methods included microfiche readers and slide projectors, while modern laboratories may use microscopes, digital cameras and image-analysis software.

Under magnification, the scale reveals a pattern of growth rings.

What Are Annuli?

The prominent annual growth marks found on a fish scale, bone or otolith are called annuli. The singular form is annulus.

During favorable growing conditions, a fish generally grows more quickly. The markings on its scales or bones are spread farther apart. Growth usually slows during winter or other stressful periods, producing closely spaced marks.

One cycle of faster and slower growth can create an identifiable annual band.

Scientists count the annuli to estimate the fish’s age. The process resembles counting rings in a tree, although fish-age interpretation can be more complicated. False rings, irregular growth, injuries and environmental stress may all affect the pattern.

The Lake Superior Fish Age Assessment Workshop report distinguishes true annuli from other marks that may form within a fish’s calcified structures. These irregular marks, sometimes called checks or split annuli, can make accurate interpretation difficult.

Not Every Scale Should Be Used

The location from which a scale is collected matters.

Scales near the lateral line may contain a tube-like canal associated with the fish’s sensory system. That feature can obscure the growth pattern and make the scale difficult to interpret.

Biologists therefore use standardized sampling locations for each species. Consistency allows them to compare fish collected in different years, different areas of a lake or by different agencies.

Each sample must also be carefully documented. Records may include:

Species

Length and weight

Capture location

Date and time

Collection method

Sample identification number

Name of the person collecting the sample

Without those details, an age estimate has far less scientific value.

Standardized collection and interpretation are particularly important on Lake Superior, where state, federal, provincial and tribal agencies all participate in fisheries monitoring. The Great Lakes Fishery Commission report describes efforts to create consistent, species-specific aging methods that can be used across the lake.

Scientists Can Reconstruct Earlier Growth

A scale may reveal more than a fish’s present age.

Because the scale grows along with the fish, scientists can measure the distance between annual growth marks and estimate how large the fish was during previous years of its life.

This process is known as back-calculation.

A fish’s growth history can offer clues about changing conditions in the lake. A year of unusually slow growth might correspond with limited food, intense competition, disease, unusual water temperatures or another environmental stressor.

However, size by itself is not a reliable way to determine age.

Two fish of the same species and length may be very different ages. One may have grown quickly in productive habitat, while another may have grown slowly under less favorable conditions.

What About Trout and Fish With Tiny Scales?

Scales are not always the best aging structure.

Some fish have no useful scales, while others—including trout—may have scales that become increasingly difficult to interpret as the fish grows older. In these situations, scientists may examine harder body structures such as:

Otoliths

Fin rays

Fin spines

Vertebrae

Maxillae, or upper-jaw bones

Other calcified structures

These structures also develop recurring growth bands.

An otolith is a small calcified structure inside a fish’s head. Otoliths help fish maintain balance and detect sound, but they also preserve a remarkably useful record of growth.

Researchers may remove an otolith, cut it into a thin section, polish it and examine the internal bands under magnification. This procedure is more involved than reading a scale, but it can produce more dependable estimates for older fish.

The Lake Superior Fish Age Assessment Workshop identified thin-sectioned otoliths examined with transmitted-light microscopy as a preferred method for aging several important Lake Superior fish groups, including coregonines such as ciscoes and whitefish.

Otoliths Are Important in Lake Superior Research

Accurate aging can be particularly challenging in Lake Superior because several native fish species are slow-growing and long-lived.

Lake trout provide a striking example.

A U.S. Geological Survey study of Lake Superior lake trout found that some fish may live as long as 42 years—far longer than many anglers might expect.

Researchers compared ages obtained from scales with ages obtained from sagittal otoliths. The scale readings consistently underestimated the ages of mature lake trout, especially the oldest fish.

In another study of deepwater humper lake trout, researchers found major differences between scale and otolith estimates. Scales placed sampled fish between approximately 5 and 13 years old, while otoliths indicated that some were between 8 and 28 years old. The study is available through the USGS Publications Warehouse.

That difference matters. Underestimating the ages of older fish can distort calculations involving growth, mortality, reproduction and overall population health.

Recognizing this problem, fisheries agencies around Lake Superior have worked together to develop standardized methods, quality-control procedures and reference collections for interpreting lake trout otoliths and other structures.

Aging Methods Differ by Species

There is no single structure that works equally well for every fish.

The preferred method depends on the species, its expected lifespan, the size of the fish and the purpose of the survey.

The Lake Superior Technical Committee’s recommendations include different aging structures for different fish, such as:

Lake trout: otoliths or maxillae, depending on the fish and survey

Ciscoes and other coregonines: thin-sectioned otoliths

Lake whitefish: otoliths

Yellow perch: spines or otoliths

Walleye: spines, otoliths or other validated structures

Lake sturgeon: fin rays

Researchers must validate the chosen structure to make sure it preserves the fish’s complete growth sequence. A method that works well for a young fish may become increasingly unreliable as the fish grows older.

Why Accurate Aging Helps Protect Lake Superior Fish

A fish population needs more than a large number of individuals. It also needs a healthy age structure.

A strong population usually contains multiple year classes, from recently hatched fish to mature adults. If surveys repeatedly find few young fish, reproduction or juvenile survival may be failing. If older adults disappear, excessive mortality may be removing important spawning fish.

Age data can help managers:

Measure the success of natural reproduction

Evaluate stocking programs

Estimate survival and mortality

Monitor strong and weak year classes

Set appropriate harvest regulations

Detect changes in growth over time

Compare populations across different parts of the lake

Measure the recovery of native fish populations

For Lake Superior lake trout, population age structure has been central to evaluating the recovery of naturally reproducing stocks following decades of damage from overfishing and invasive sea lamprey.

Accurate ages also improve statistical models used to estimate how many fish are entering a population, how many are surviving and how many can be harvested without jeopardizing future generations.

Different Scientists May Read the Same Fish Differently

Determining a fish’s age is not always as simple as counting a few obvious rings.

Preparation methods, image quality and human interpretation can all affect the final result. A reader may mistake a stress mark for an annual ring or fail to recognize a tightly spaced annulus near the edge of an older fish’s otolith.

Scientists therefore use quality-assurance procedures such as:

Having more than one reader examine selected samples

Reading samples without knowing the fish’s length

Comparing results with established reference collections

Rechecking samples when readers disagree

Conducting regular training and calibration exercises

Recording uncertainty in the final age assignment

The 2023 Lake Superior workshop brought together representatives from 12 state, provincial, federal and tribal governments to improve consistency among agencies.

The workshop recommended shared reference collections and standardized protocols to reduce differences among individual readers and fisheries laboratories.

Can Anglers Determine a Fish’s Age?

An angler can make a rough guess based on species, length and local growth patterns, but appearance alone cannot provide a dependable age.

A large fish is not necessarily extremely old, and a smaller fish is not necessarily young. Water temperature, prey availability, genetics, population density and habitat can all influence growth.

Reliable age determination requires properly collected structures, suitable equipment and experience interpreting the bands. Even trained readers may compare results or examine the same sample more than once.

The best practice for most anglers is to record the fish’s length, weight, location and date, then allow fisheries professionals to collect any biological samples required for an official study.

Anglers who encounter a tagged fish should also carefully record the tag number and follow the reporting instructions printed on the tag. Tagged fish can provide especially valuable information about movement, growth and survival.

Every Ring Tells Part of Lake Superior’s Story

The rings inside a fish scale or otolith are more than a biological curiosity. They are a record of survival through changing seasons, food conditions, migrations and environmental pressures.

When scientists combine age estimates from hundreds or thousands of fish, individual growth rings become a broader history of the lake itself.

That history helps fisheries managers understand what has happened beneath Lake Superior’s surface—and make better-informed decisions about how its remarkable fish populations can be protected for the future.

Devil’s Island is one of Lake Superior’s great kayak destinations—but its beauty comes with real big-water risk.

There are places on Lake Superior that are beautiful from a distance. Devil’s Island is not one of them.

To really understand why this remote Apostle Island has become one of the most sought-after paddling destinations in Wisconsin, you need to get close…to the arches, the tunnels, the sculpted sandstone walls, and the cold, restless water that made all of it possible.

That is the draw behind a video feature from PBS North, which follows the team from Apostle Islands Kayaking Express as they help visitors reach one of the most dramatic corners of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

A Kayak Playground Carved Into Sandstone

The video calls Devil’s Island a “kayak playground,” and that description fits.

Around the island’s north and east sides, paddlers move past narrow slots, portholes, arches, and sea caves carved into layered sandstone. The formations are intricate enough to feel almost architectural, as if someone designed them for exploration.

In reality, they were shaped by ancient geology and the steady force of Lake Superior.

The National Park Service explains that the Apostle Islands sea caves formed where wave action attacks and undercuts the base of sandstone cliffs. Over time, those undercut areas can join behind the cliff face, leaving behind pillars and arches…the exact kinds of features that make Devil’s Island so visually striking from a kayak.

How Apostle Islands Kayaking Express Makes Devil’s Island Accessible

Devil’s Island sits far offshore in Lake Superior, which is why many visitors see it only from a cruise boat. Apostle Islands Kayaking Express offers a different kind of experience: a boat-supported kayak tour that takes guests directly to the island before launching them into tandem kayaks.

According to Apostle Islands Kayaking Express, its Devils Island Sea Caves tour begins in Bayfield, Wisconsin, then uses a custom boat to transport paddlers to the island. From there, guests launch into kayaks near the sea caves and paddle through sandstone arches and chambers with guides leading the route. The company describes the Devil’s Island tour as a five-hour experience with about two hours of paddling, with all equipment included and the support boat nearby.

That boat support matters. Devil’s Island is not a casual paddle from shore. It is an exposed Lake Superior destination where distance, wind, waves, cold water, and changing weather all need to be taken seriously.

Exploring Apostle Islands National Lakeshore

The larger setting is Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, one of the signature protected landscapes on Lake Superior.

The National Lakeshore includes 21 islands and a mainland shoreline along northern Wisconsin’s Bayfield Peninsula. It is known for sandstone sea caves, historic lighthouses, beaches, campsites, and some of the most memorable boating and paddling scenery on Lake Superior.

The park is also spread out in a way that helps explain one of the feelings captured in the PBS North video: solitude. Even when the Apostle Islands are busy, the islands, channels, shorelines, and open water can make the place feel surprisingly uncrowded once you are out in the archipelago.

Screenshot from the PBS North video

The Real Geology Behind Devil’s Island

One of the most important claims in the video is geological: Devil’s Island has unusually dramatic sandstone formations because it is exposed to the power of Lake Superior.

That claim is well supported by the National Park Service’s explanation of the Apostle Islands sea caves. The NPS says the Devils Island Formation is made of thin, porous sandstone layers that are more vulnerable to erosion. When Lake Superior waves strike and undercut the base of those cliffs, caves, arches, and supporting pillars can form.

The video also references “10,000 years” of glacial history. That is broadly connected to the most recent glacial shaping of the Apostle Islands landscape, but it is important to separate the age of the sandstone from the more recent glacial activity.

The sandstone itself is much older than 10,000 years. According to the National Park Service, the sandstones of the Apostle Islands and Bayfield Peninsula were deposited during the late Precambrian era, from nearly one billion years ago to about 660 million years ago. The Devils Island Formation formed in sand-flat environments that were intermittently covered by shallow ponded water, resulting in thinner layers especially suited to sea cave formation.

The glacial part of the story is much more recent. The NPS notes that Pleistocene ice pulses sculpted the islands, and that the Apostle Islands were most recently glaciated by the Vanders Ice Lobe about 12,000 years ago. As the ice retreated, changing lake levels and rebounding land helped expose the islands and reshape the shoreline.

So the most accurate summary is this: Devil’s Island’s sandstone is hundreds of millions of years old, while glaciers and post-glacial lake processes helped shape the modern island landscape that paddlers see today.

Is Lake Superior Really the World’s Largest Freshwater Lake?

The video also describes Lake Superior as the world’s largest freshwater lake. That statement is generally correct when referring to freshwater lakes by surface area.

NOAA describes Lake Superior as the second-largest lake in the world by surface area overall, and the largest and deepest of the five Great Lakes. NOAA also lists its maximum depth at about 1,333 feet.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency lists Lake Superior’s water area at 31,700 square miles, with an average depth of 483 feet, a maximum depth of 1,332 feet, and a volume of 2,900 cubic miles.

That scale is part of what makes Devil’s Island so unforgettable. It is also part of what makes the trip serious.

Why Lake Superior Conditions Matter for Kayakers

Lake Superior is not just a scenic backdrop in this story. It is the force that created the caves, and it is the force every paddler has to respect.

The National Park Service is direct about kayaking safety in the Apostle Islands. Its guidance warns that kayakers have had fatal accidents at the sea caves, and that small open boats, canoes, open-cockpit kayaks, sit-on-top kayaks, and paddleboards are not recommended near the caves. The NPS also warns that waves from wind and boats can hit the rocks and bounce back, creating “confused waters.”

The same NPS kayaking guidance recommends monitoring marine weather, avoiding the sea caves in rough conditions, wearing personal flotation devices, wet suits or dry suits, and spray skirts, and not paddling the caves alone. It also notes that Lake Superior is known for cold temperatures, rough seas, fog, and sudden squalls.

That context is essential for anyone watching the video and imagining a Devil’s Island paddle. The scenery is inviting, but this is still big-water paddling on a cold inland sea. Or, if you’re looking to circumnavigate Lake Superior by kayak like Constance Simes!

Wave Watch and Safer Trip Planning

This is where Wave Watch from Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore becomes especially useful.

Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore is the nonprofit partner supporting the park, and its Wave Watch project gives paddlers, sailors, anglers, boaters, and park visitors better access to real-time lake condition information. The project uses a network of wave and weather buoys in and around the Apostle Islands to help people better understand what is happening on the water before they go out.

For kayakers, that kind of information can be critical. Lake Superior can look manageable from shore while conditions farther out are building. Wind direction, wave height, and changing weather all matter, especially near exposed islands and sea caves where waves can rebound off rock walls and create unstable paddling conditions.

Wave Watch does not remove the risk from Lake Superior. Nothing does. But it can help boaters and paddlers make more informed decisions, especially when paired with National Weather Service marine forecasts, local outfitter guidance, and conservative judgment.

Making It Up North on Lake Superior

The video is part of PBS North’s regional storytelling work, and it fits naturally into the station’s focus on people building lives, businesses, and creative work in northern places.

In this case, the workplace happens to be one of the most beautiful offices imaginable: a boat deck on Lake Superior, a line of kayaks, and the sandstone walls of Devil’s Island rising out of blue water.

It is also a reminder that tourism on Lake Superior often depends on a mix of natural beauty, local knowledge, specialized equipment, and people who know how quickly the lake can change.

Beauty, Risk, and the Power of Lake Superior

The result is part travel inspiration, part behind-the-scenes look at a specialized Lake Superior operation, and part reminder that the Apostle Islands are not just scenic. They are geologically alive.

Waves are still working on the caves. Wind is still shaping the day. Cold water is still the boss.

That combination is exactly why Devil’s Island has such a hold on paddlers. It is remote, sculpted, exposed, and unforgettable. The same forces that make it dangerous are the forces that made it beautiful.

Before planning a trip, watch the PBS North video, learn more from Apostle Islands Kayaking Express, review visitor and safety information from Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and check current lake-condition resources like Wave Watch from Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore.

57 days solo on Lake Superior. Kayaker Constance Simes shares her journey of resilience in this Paddle & Portage feature video.

Lake Superior is not merely a lake — it is an inland sea that demands respect, humility, and a profound level of skill to navigate. To paddle its entire shoreline by kayak is a feat of endurance. To do it alone? That’s a journey into the deepest parts of one’s own psyche.

In a recent feature by Paddle and Portage, kayaker and ACA instructor Constance (Connie) Simes shared the riveting details of her 2022 solo circumnavigation of the world’s largest freshwater lake.

Note to Readers: The following story is based on an in-depth interview conducted by Paddle and Portage.
From Iowa to the Inland Sea

Simes’ journey to the “Big Water” was not a straight line. Originally from Indianola, Iowa, her love for paddling didn’t begin on the rugged coast of Superior, but on the calm waters of Lake Ahquabi State Park. It was here, renting kayaks day after day to escape the stress of post-college life, that she found her calling.

What started as a therapeutic escape in Iowa eventually led her north to the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin. After years of making the 16-hour round-trip drive just to be near the water—often spending New Year’s Eve alone in a cabin on the North Shore—she finally moved to Bayfield, WI. There, she honed her skills as a guide and achieved her American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 4 Coastal Kayak Instructor certification.

The “Stealth” Expedition Setup

For her circumnavigation, Simes opted for a setup that was deceptively simple. Unlike many expedition paddlers who look like they are moving house, Simes packed everything inside her kayak to maintain a low profile and better performance in wind.

She paddled a Nigel Dennis Kayak (NDK) Explorer LV (Low Volume), a British-made boat renowned for its rough-water handling and expedition pedigree. To manage physical fatigue, she rotated between two Greenland paddles and two Euro-blade paddles, switching muscle groups to keep her body fresh over the long haul.

The Route: 57 Days Counter-Clockwise

Simes launched from Little Sand Bay in the Apostle Islands on June 22, 2022—the day after the summer solstice. Her strategy was to paddle counter-clockwise. This allowed her to start on the familiar South Shore (Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula), warming up her body and mind before crossing into the remote and rugged Canadian North Shore.

The journey spanned 57 days, with 49 days of paddling and 8 days off for weather or rest. She navigated through Sault Ste. Marie, up to Wawa and Marathon, across to Thunder Bay, and down the Minnesota coast back to Wisconsin. While she aimed for a full circumnavigation, she made the tactical decision to cut through the Keweenaw Waterway rather than round the exposed Keweenaw Peninsula, saving the latter for a future expedition to respect the lake’s unpredictable nature.

Resource: Little Sand Bay (Apostle Islands)

The Crux: Isolation in Canada

The shift from the populated South Shore to the Canadian coast was abrupt. Simes describes crossing Whitefish Bay and landing on a shoreline of softball-sized cobbles, a stark contrast to the sandy beaches she was used to. It was here that the true solitude set in.

For nearly three weeks, Simes was entirely self-supported, carrying all her food and gear. The isolation reached its peak in Pukaskwa National Park. On Otter Island, surrounded by fog that obscured the sky but revealed the coastline, she experienced what she described as a “deafening silence.” It was a moment of pure, overwhelming emotion—a testament to the power of solitude in the wilderness.

Resource: Pukaskwa National Park

Paddling with Chronic Illness

Perhaps the most inspiring aspect of Simes’ journey is that she undertook it while managing a chronic, invisible illness involving hypermobility. She used the trip as a way to prove to herself that she could still pursue her passion. Surprisingly, she found that her body felt better during the expedition than it did in “normal” life. The rhythm of paddling, the fresh air, and the attunement to her physical needs allowed her to thrive, sleeping better and feeling stronger than she had in years.

Humility and Humor

The trip wasn’t without its lighter moments. During a multi-day weather delay near Marathon, Ontario, Simes attempted to channel the survival show Alone by building a bushcraft chair. The result? A collapse caught on camera and a fit of “slap-happy” laughter—a reminder that even on serious expeditions, the ability to laugh at oneself is a survival skill.

Follow the Journey

Constance Simes continues to paddle and teach, proving that with preparation and intuition, big waters are accessible even to those with health challenges. You can follow her ongoing adventures on Instagram.

Planning a fishing trip around Lake Superior is a logistical challenge. Whether you are driving the full Lake Superior Circle Tour or just exploring a specific region like the Keweenaw Peninsula or the North Shore, you are eventually going to need fresh bait, a specific lure, or a replacement rod tip.

While the big cities like Duluth and Thunder Bay have well-known pro shops, some of the most critical stops are small gas stations and general stores in remote towns where cell service is spotty. Knowing exactly where your next resupply point is can save your trip.

Below is our comprehensive directory of bait shops, tackle stores, and outfitters located within roughly 50 miles of the Lake Superior shoreline. We have organized them by region to help you plan your route.

Looking for a quick list of the top shops?
See the Top-rated fishing gear shops around Lake Superior

Minnesota North Shore

The drive from Duluth up to Grand Portage is one of the most scenic routes in America, but for anglers, it’s a gauntlet of opportunity. This stretch is famous for its deep-water trolling and the unique “shore casting” culture where anglers target trout and salmon right from the rocky banks. The shops here specialize in heavy spoons, long rods, and the specific live bait needed to tempt fish in crystal-clear, icy water.

Wisconsin South Shore

The South Shore offers a different flavor of fishing, dominated by the sheltered waters of Chequamegon Bay and the scenic Apostle Islands. This is world-class smallmouth bass territory that transitions quickly into deep-water trolling for lake trout and salmon. The shops in this region are versatile, equipping you for both shallow-water fly fishing and heavy-duty trolling rigs.

Shop Name

City

Specialty/Notes

Website

Southside Bait

Superior

Open early/late

Link

Superior Fly Angler

Superior

Brule River fly fishing

Link

Siskiwit Bay Marina

Cornucopia

Marina supplies

Link

The Bait Shack

Washburn

Only pro shop in Washburn

Link

River Rock Inn

Ashland

Lodging & full bait shop

Link

Anglers All

Ashland

Archery & trolling gear

Link

Michigan’s Upper Peninsula

Cross into the U.P. and the vibe changes—it’s wilder, quieter, and deeply connected to the rivers that feed the big lake. While you’ll find plenty of gear for the open water, this region is a haven for stream anglers chasing steelhead and brook trout. The outfitters here are often staffed by guides who know every bend in the local rivers and exactly which fly pattern is hatching today.

Ontario North Shore

North of the border, the highway stretches out and the crowds disappear. This is the land of giants—including the world-record brook trout caught in the Nipigon River. The tackle shops here range from full-service sporting goods stores in Thunder Bay to historic general stores in Wawa where you can buy lures alongside a pickle from a barrel. If you are looking for true wilderness fishing, this is where your journey begins.

Using This Directory

We recommend bookmarking this page if you are planning a trip around the lake. Cell service can be non-existent in areas like the Canadian North Shore (between Wawa and Thunder Bay) or parts of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Having a list of where you can stop for fresh worms, a new spool of line, or a fishing license can make the difference between a minor delay and a ruined day on the water.

Did we miss a hidden gem? If you know of a local hardware store, gas station, or bait shop that keeps anglers stocked up around the lake, let us know so we can keep this directory up to date.

Wrapping Up: Your Lake Superior Tackle & Gear Guide

However you like to fish Lake Superior—trolling deep for lake trout, casting from the breakwall at sunrise, or sneaking into a spring steelhead stream—these local tackle and gear shops are the heartbeat of the fishery. They are often the first to know when the bite turns on, which color spoon is hot, or which river finally dropped into shape after a big rain.

Use this directory as a starting point, not the last word. Shops change locations, hours, and inventory over time, so it is always worth a quick call or a click through to their website or Google Maps listing before you go. Many of these businesses are family-run and seasonal, and a little advance planning goes a long way toward making sure you get the bait, tackle, and advice you need.

Most importantly, when you can, buy local. Every rod, reel, net, or handful of jigs you pick up from a Lake Superior shop helps keep expertise, jobs, and fishing culture rooted right here around the big lake. The next time you land a memorable fish or introduce someone new to the water, there is a good chance one of these shops played a small part in making that moment happen.

If you notice a shop we missed or a detail that needs updating, let us know—this guide is meant to grow and stay current as the Lake Superior fishing community continues to evolve.

Fisheries biologists have uncovered a remarkable fish story in Lake Superior: Mary Catherine, a lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), is now believed to be the oldest lake trout ever recorded in the Great Lakes. Hatch year: 1961. Caught during a routine survey in September 2023 on Klondike Reef, a remote reef in Lake Superior, Mary Catherine was found to be 62 years old, twice the age expected for a lake trout under ordinary conditions.

In September 2023, fisheries crews working Klondike Reef in Lake Superior aged a lake trout, affectionately nicknamed “Mary Catherine”, at 62 years old, making her the oldest lake trout documented in the Great Lakes. She’s a humper-form lake trout, small-bodied but long-lived, and biologists confirmed her age by reading growth rings on otoliths (ear stones), the gold standard for old fish. Reports note she was hatched in 1961, which means this single trout lived through sea-lamprey decimation, fishery closures, and multi-decade restoration—then outlived most of her species several times over.

That longevity arrives alongside a broader rebound story: in Minnesota’s portion of Lake Superior, 98% of lake trout sampled in 2023 were wild, a striking indicator of self-sustaining populations after decades of lamprey control, habitat protection, and careful harvest management. Source: Minnesota DNR Files (PDF)

A Life Lived Across Keweenaw History

If Mary Catherine truly hatched in 1961, she “saw” plenty: C&H Mining still operating; a ~95% Great Lakes lake-trout collapse by 1964 from overfishing and lamprey; the 1986 EPA Superfund designations at Torch Lake and Quincy Smelter; the 1992 creation of Keweenaw National Historical Park; and the present-day recovery of native fish communities in Superior’s cold, clear water.

How Do Scientists Know a Fish Is 62 Years Old?

Mary Catherine’s remarkable age was determined by examining the annual growth rings preserved inside her otoliths—small calcified structures often called a fish’s “ear stones.” Similar to the rings inside a tree, these markings help biologists estimate a fish’s age and study how quickly it grew throughout its life. Learn more about how scientists determine the age of Lake Superior fish, including why otoliths are often more accurate than scales for aging older lake trout.

Counting Rings & Setting Records

Usually, lake trout in Lake Superior live around 25–30 years. The previous oldest known trout in Superior was about 42 years old, recorded in 1998. Mary Catherine weighs about 4.62 pounds (2.1 kilograms) and measures just under 25 inches (627 mm) long. A modest size, but astounding longevity.

She is of the “humper” subspecies, which are known for relatively slow growth and feeding predominantly on invertebrates—traits that may contribute to longer lives. Biologists estimated her age by counting growth rings on her otoliths (inner ear stones), where one ring forms each winter.

What’s at Stake: Why This Matters

That Mary Catherine survived through decades of environmental stress, threats from overfishing and sea lamprey, changing water quality, and variable climate implies something positive: the lake trout population in Lake Superior is in relatively strong shape. Her longevity is more than trivia, it’s a signal.

In fact, in 2024 state, provincial, tribal, and federal agencies declared that lake trout populations in Lake Superior are now “fully restored.”

Looking Back: Mary Catherine’s Lifetime in Context

Since 1961, when Mary Catherine hatched, a lot has happened locally around Lake Superior. Here are some selecting landmarks that span her life:

1961: C&H Mining Company (Calumet & Hecla) was still in operation.

1964: Lake trout populations across the Great Lakes dropped nearly 95% due to overfishing and invasive sea lamprey.

1986: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified sites along Torch Lake and the Quincy Smelter as potential Superfund cleanup locations.

1992: The Keweenaw National Historical Park was established.

2024: Lake Superior’s lake trout population declared fully restored.

It’s rare that a single living fish has been a silent witness to so much regional history, including environmental battles, mining era legacies, conservation reforms, and evolving community relationships with the lake.

Second Oldest Fish & Other Notables

While Mary Catherine now holds the top spot among recorded ages for lake trout in the Great Lakes, there have been other impressive specimens and related stories:

The previous record for lake trout in Lake Superior was a 42-year-old fish, caught in 1998.

Another example (not lake trout) is the “bigmouth buffalo” species, found elsewhere in North America, known to live for over 100 years, setting records among long‐lived freshwater fish. Source: Wikipedia

These stories reinforce how long‐lived many native fish can be, under the right conditions of cold, clean water, limited pollution, and good habitat.

How Old Do Lake Superior’s Native Fish Get?

Mary Catherine’s 62 years is extraordinary—but she’s not the only elder in Superior’s neighborhood. Here’s how she compares with other native species (and native coregonines closely tied to Superior’s food web). “Max ages” reflect the oldest documented in credible studies or agency synopses; “typical” gives a realist’s range anglers and biologists often observe.

Why the spread? Cold, stable, low-productivity waters—like Superior’s offshore—tend to favor slower growth and longer life. Better age methods (sectioned otoliths) have also pushed known maxima upward for several species over the last two decades.
Why Mary Catherine Matters

Finding a 62-year-old trout in 2023 is a testament to the lake. Decades of lamprey control and careful harvest brought Superior’s native predators back to a largely self-sustaining state, with survey crews now reporting very high proportions of wild trout in Minnesota waters (98% in 2023). That resilience echoes across the food web—the same USGS and GLFC surveys that track lake trout also show big, episodic cisco year-classes that can shape the next decade of forage.

If you’re looking for an unforgettable way to experience the wild beauty of Lake Superior, booking a charter fishing trip is one of the best ways to do it. A charter trip offers a unique fishing experience for everyone—no matter your age or experience level. You could be reeling in a trophy lake trout or watching your kids light up with excitement after catching their first fish.

Lake Superior is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area, and a wide variety of fish live within its cool waters. Charter captains know the hot spots and handle all the gear, bait, and licensing, so you can focus on the fun. Here’s what you need to know if you’re considering a trip, and below there is a list of some great Lake Superior Charter Fishing services in the U.S. and Canada.

Fish You Can Catch on a Lake Superior Charter Fishing Trip

Charter fishing services around the lake cater to different regions, but they all specialize in species that make this lake legendary. Here are just a few examples of the fish you might catch on Lake Superior while charter fishing:

Lake Trout: The crown jewel of Superior fishing. Deep, cold water is their playground, and they get big—often 10 to 20 pounds, sometimes more.

Chinook & Coho Salmon: Especially in the western parts of the lake (Duluth/Superior, Apostle Islands), these aggressive fighters are a favorite for anglers.

Steelhead & Rainbow Trout: Usually caught near river mouths and along the North Shore.

Brown Trout: Often found near shorelines, these fish are common targets in spring and fall.

Walleye: More common in bays and near tributaries—like Chequamegon Bay or the mouths of Michigan’s rivers.

Northern Pike: Found in weedy bays and estuaries, particularly in warmer, shallower waters near river inlets. A thrilling predator with a strong fight.

Smallmouth Bass: Particularly abundant near rocky shorelines and islands, especially around the Apostle Islands and Keweenaw Peninsula.

Lake Whitefish: Often overlooked but delicious—usually targeted with lighter gear in colder months or deeper waters.

Each area of the lake offers slightly different fishing opportunities, depending on the time of year and water temperature.

Man holding a large northern pike

Why You Should Book a Fishing Charter on Lake Superior

As someone who’s spent countless days on the waters of Lake Superior and its surrounding rivers, I can confidently say that there’s nothing quite like the experience of fishing here. Whether it’s the thrill of reeling in a massive lake trout or simply enjoying the stunning natural beauty that surrounds you, Lake Superior offers an adventure that’s hard to beat. And the best way to make the most of it? Booking a fishing charter with a local expert who knows these waters inside and out.

Even though me & my friends have been out fishing many times, booking a fishing charter with a local expert who knows these waters inside and out is at least a once a year splurge we indulge in to have a fun day on the lake, gain some new fishing insights from an expert, and let’s face it — to be catered to for a day while catching fish ain’t bad either. ⁤

Why Book a Fishing Charter?

You might be thinking, “Why not just fish from shore or rent a boat?” While those options have their charm, booking a fishing charter takes your experience to the next level. When you head out with a seasoned captain, you’re tapping into a wealth of local knowledge that’s been honed over years of fishing these waters. Captains like Sean from Northern Lights Adventures or Dean from Redwood Sportfishing Charters know where the fish are biting, what lures to use, and how to adapt to the ever-changing conditions of Lake Superior.

Take, for instance, Captain Sean’s ice fishing trips near Ashland, Wisconsin. When you book with Sean, you’re not just getting a ride out onto the ice – you’re getting a fully guided experience. Picture yourself cruising over the frozen lake on a snowmobile with heated seats, then settling into a cozy, insulated shelter while Sean sets up the gear. You’ll be jigging and watching the fish swim up on a Garmin Live Scope Plus, and when there’s a bite, Sean will call you out to reel it in. The whole day is planned for your enjoyment and comfort, right down to the grilled meal on the ice.

Or maybe you’re more of a warm-weather angler. Captain Dean’s trips on the St. Mary’s River offer a completely different but equally thrilling experience. Imagine cruising the river on an 18′ Hobo Cruiser flats boat, casting your line with top-quality Daiwa reels and Berkley rods, and then feeling the excitement of a Salmon or Rainbow Trout on the line. Dean knows these waters like the back of his hand, from the rapids all the way to the mouth of the Garden River and Lake George, ensuring you’ll be in the right spot at the right time.

Fishing charters are perfect for any occasion – whether it’s a family vacation, a getaway with friends, or even a business outing. Imagine spending the day out on the largest freshwater lake in the world, surrounded by breathtaking scenery and the promise of a big catch. And the best part? You don’t have to worry about a thing – just bring your fishing license, your favorite snacks and drinks, and a cooler for your catch. The captains will take care of the rest.

Where to Start Your Charter Fishing Adventure

Whether you’re battling a lake trout on the Big Lake, jigging for walleye on the Brule, or casting for salmon on the St. Mary’s River, there’s nothing quite like the thrill of fishing in this incredible region. So go ahead, book your trip, and get ready to experience the adventure of a lifetime.

Top Reasons to Book a Fishing Charter on Lake Superior

Living by Lake Superior has its perks, and one of my absolute favorites is the chance to get out on the water and fish. Over the years, I’ve found that booking a fishing charter isn’t just about catching fish – it’s about creating memories, learning new skills, and experiencing the lake in a way that’s truly special. Here are some of the best reasons to book a fishing charter on Lake Superior, based on my own experiences and those of other folks who love this big lake as much as I do.

1. Family Vacation or Reunion

I’ve taken my family out on the lake countless times, and there’s something about being on a charter that brings everyone closer together. Whether you’ve got kids who are new to fishing or seasoned anglers in the group, a day on the water is a perfect way to bond and create stories that’ll be shared for years.

2. Corporate Retreat or Team Building

I’ve seen businesses transform when they get out of the office and onto the lake. A fishing charter is a unique way to build teamwork and trust. It’s a relaxed environment, but there’s something about the thrill of the catch that brings people together in ways you just don’t see during a typical workday.

3. Bachelor or Bachelorette Party

When my buddy got married, we skipped the traditional bachelor party and headed straight for the lake. It was a blast! A fishing charter is a fantastic way to celebrate an upcoming wedding with close friends – there’s nothing like reeling in a big one and toasting the catch with your best friends by your side.

4. Special Occasion (Birthday, Anniversary)

I’ve celebrated a few birthdays on the lake, and trust me, it beats any party. Whether it’s your birthday, your anniversary, or another special milestone, a fishing charter makes the day unforgettable. There’s something about the combination of nature, adventure, and good company that makes it a celebration like no other.

5. Friends’ Getaway

Sometimes you just need to get away with your closest friends, and a fishing charter on Lake Superior is the perfect escape. I’ve done this a few times, and each trip has been different, but always filled with laughter, good fishing, and the kind of relaxation you can only get on the water.

6. Learning Experience

I’ve been fishing for years, but I’m always learning something new when I go out with a charter captain. These folks know the lake inside and out, and whether you’re a newbie or looking to hone your skills, a charter trip is a hands-on learning experience you won’t forget.

7. Exploring a New Area

Even though I’ve lived near the lake for ages, there are always new spots to discover. If you’re visiting Lake Superior, booking a charter is the best way to explore the waters with a local expert. They’ll show you the best fishing spots and share insights about the area that you won’t find in any guidebook.

8. Relaxation and Recreation

Let’s face it, sometimes you just need to unwind. I’ve found that there’s no better way to relax than spending a day on the lake. A fishing charter offers the perfect mix of peaceful surroundings and the excitement of the catch – it’s the kind of day that leaves you feeling refreshed and recharged.

9. Catching Trophy Fish

There’s nothing quite like the thrill of landing a trophy fish, and a charter gives you the best chance to do just that. With a knowledgeable captain guiding the way, you’ll be in the right spot at the right time, using the right gear. I’ve had my share of big catches, and trust me, it’s an experience you won’t want to miss.

10. Photography and Wildlife Viewing

While the fishing is fantastic, don’t forget about the scenery and wildlife. I always bring my camera along, and it’s worth it – from the stunning sunrises to the eagles soaring overhead, Lake Superior offers some of the most breathtaking views you’ll ever see. And if you’re lucky, you might even spot a bear or a moose along the shoreline.

11. Seasonal Events or Tournaments

Lake Superior has its share of fishing tournaments and seasonal events, and I’ve found that booking a charter during these times adds an extra layer of excitement. Whether it’s the salmon run or a local competition, being out on the water during peak season with a knowledgeable captain is the best way to make the most of it.

12. Ice Fishing Experience

Winter on Lake Superior is something special, and ice fishing is one of the best ways to enjoy it. I’ve spent plenty of cold days on the ice, and there’s nothing like the experience of jigging for fish in a warm shelter while the world outside is frozen solid. With a charter, you’ll have all the gear and guidance you need to fish safely and comfortably, even in the heart of winter.

No matter the reason, booking a fishing charter on Lake Superior is an adventure worth taking. Whether you’re celebrating, learning, or just looking to relax, you’ll find that a day on the water is one of the best ways to experience everything this incredible lake has to offer.

What to Expect From Lake Superior Weather when Fishing

Lake Superior definitely has a mind of its own. Even on calm days, things can change fast. But don’t worry—charter captains monitor conditions closely and prioritize safety above all else.

Spring (May–June): Cool, with temps ranging from 40s to 60s (°F). Fishing is excellent as trout and salmon cruise nearer to shore.

Summer (July–August): Milder temps (60s to 80s), calmer water, and perfect conditions for family trips.

Fall (September–October): Crisp and colorful, with big trout moving in. A favorite season for serious anglers.

Weather Tip: Dress in layers and bring a windbreaker, even in summer. Morning trips can start chilly and end warm.

Lake Superior's climate is shifting fast. Explore a decade of wild weather—warmer waters, intense snowfalls, and fluctuating lake levels—and what it means for the future.

In the past decade, Lake Superior has become a fascinating case study for scientists and educators in how climate patterns are evolving and impacting our natural world. From record-high water temperatures to shifting ice cover and fluctuating lake levels, the changes in Lake Superior’s weather patterns have been said to be a not only beautiful, powerful, but also potentially concerning.

Drilling for ice core samples on Lake Superior

Warmer Water Temperatures and Declining Ice Cover

Lake Superior has seen consistently warmer water temperatures over the last decade, hitting record highs a few times over that time period. Warmer summers are one of the contributors to higher lake temperatures. Those higher temps can feel pleasant but they actually have a big impact on the lake’s ecosystem. As the air heats up, it fuels evaporation, increasing moisture in the atmosphere and affecting weather patterns around the lake.

This warmth also reduces ice cover in winter. Less ice means the lake stays open longer, making it more vulnerable to evaporation and leading to higher water levels in some seasons and lower ones in others. In the winter of 2020, for example, ice coverage on Lake Superior was notably low, which scientists linked to both warmer winter air and disruptions in the polar vortex, a pattern that typically brings frigid Arctic air southward over the Great Lakes. (sources: GLERL, U.S. Geological Survey, US EPA)

Dramatic Swings in Water Levels Due to Lake Superior’s Weather

Lake Superior’s water levels have fluctuated greatly. In the early 2010s, they were on the low side, only to rise dramatically to near-record highs by 2019. What’s causing this rollercoaster? Scientists state that climate change plays a role by influencing how much precipitation falls in the area and how quickly it evaporates. Recent years have seen more intense spring rains, filling the lake fast, followed by dry spells where levels drop back down as the lake “breathes” through evaporation. These fluctuations create challenges for managing shoreline erosion and maintaining habitats around the lake. (sources: Great Lakes Echo, GLISA)

Snowfall and Lake-Effect Snow

Lake Superior’s warming waters also have a hand in winter snowfall patterns according to experts. As cold air passes over the warmer lake in early winter, it picks up moisture, fueling intense lake-effect snow. This has made snowfall heavier and more unpredictable in regions downwind of the lake, like Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin. Some years have seen incredible snowfall, while warmer winters brought less. This variability affects not only local life but also regional tourism, as many people travel to the area to enjoy winter sports. (sources: GLISA, U.S. Geological Survey)

MODIS satellite image of ice cover on Lake Superior from 2014, via NOAA

Lake Superior, like the other Great Lakes, is showing us how climate change doesn’t just mean a slow, steady warming — it can also mean more dramatic shifts in temperature, snowfall, and water levels, sometimes within just a few years. Watching how this mighty lake responds by monitoring Lake Superior’s weather can give scientists insight into the future of other freshwater ecosystems.

Upon entering Putt n Pets Mini Golf, you’ll see that it is a self-service paying station where you’ll get your trusty clubs, golf balls, and snacks if the front desk is open. Don’t forget to bring some quarters for feed if you’d like the neat experience of feeding the animals; I’d highly recommend it for a true Putt n Pets experience.

Another fun bit about the entrance is the wooden map of the United States which has pins in place of where visitors have come from. How neat is that? During our experience there we ran into a kind Canadian family who was also incredibly excited at the opportunity to feed the adorable goats. You just never know the kind of stories you’ll gain from taking a chance on a quirky experience like this!

Along with its well-maintained holes and smile-worthy decor (can you spot the Statue of Liberty in the photo below?), the atmosphere of Putt n Pets Mini Golf is truly a Northwoods experience. You’re surrounded by critters, good company, and greenery, and you’re not far from Lake Superior at all, it doesn’t get much more Up North quintessential than that!

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://onlakesuperior.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IMG_9832-1024x768.jpeg" alt="Putt n Pets Mini Golf in Grand Marais Minnesota On Lake Superior.
Another thing I love about Putt n Pets Mini Golf, aside from it being probably one of the most amusing experiences of mini golf in Minnesota, is that the activity of mini golf is fairly inexpensive and can be enjoyed no matter what age you are.

Adults, teenagers, and children can all find something to enjoy at Putt n Pets; why even the very little ones who can’t hold up their clubs yet. Because if you aren’t into the mini golf of it all, there’s always the entertainment of watching and feeding the animals!

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="768" src="https://onlakesuperior.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/10/IMG_9835-1024x768.jpeg" alt="Putt n Pets Mini Golf in Grand Marais Minnesota On Lake Superior.
Plus, right next to the parking lot, there are a few coin-operated rides for kiddos to look forward to and enjoy as well as a silly photo opp to commemorate your Putt n Pets Mini Golf experience!
