“This was a nice little zoo that we visited. There were a good variety of animals that we got to see. We went during the fall and they had decorated the whole place for Halloween which we loved to see. They also had a little nature trail, which was nice to walk through. There were lots of informative signs about the animals and plants that you may come across in Minnesota. There was a little waterfall too. There was an area, which was my favorite, that had a nocturnal exhibit. You got to see a lot of the nocturnal animals doing stuff they would do at night. After we got through the zoo, we browsed the gift shop and got ice cream too. It was a pleasant experience and the kids loved it.”

“From the outside it looks a little questionable but don’t judge the book by its cover. The inside was great for kids and one of the best Children’s museums despite how small it is. The staff were friendly and more engaging than others. Lots of cool stuff the kids can interact with and do. Great for kids under 10 and some activities were fun for adults to engage with their kids.”

We’ll cover a variety of hiking trails and footpaths, beaches, and parks, and take a closer dive at some options we saw previously that are worth another look. Superior is a fabulous place to dawdle around and visit; bring on the Superior WI attractions!

Hiking Trails and Footpaths in Superior WI

If you love yourself a path through nature, you’re going to love this set of Superior WI attractions because, boy, does Superior have a wonderful variety of trails!

There are all-season ATV/UTV routes, and you can take a closer look at their map here for further information. And there are also non-motorized trails and mountain bike trails, a little something for everyone. We love the inclusion of all types of trail-loving pedestrians and the awesome options the city has to offer.

Below, we’ll be taking a peek to get to know some of these non-motorized trails a bit better. I’d encourage you to check out their website because the City of Superior is awesome at staying up-to-date on trail conditions and whether they are open or not.

It’s a huge bummer when you’ve got all your gear on, and you’re hyped up, but you arrive at your trail destination only to have the heart-sinking feeling of seeing the CLOSED sign. When you’re hiking along these Superior WI attractions on Lake Superior, you can hop on their website quickly and double-check!

Millennium Trail

Miles: 1.6 (one way) Elmira Avenue to Billings Drive

Terrain: Flat, Blacktop Trail through the Superior Municipal Forest

Fun Fact: Not only is the Osaugie Trail honored with being dubbed the best accessible trail by Lake Superior Magazine in 2019, but it also connects to the Tri-County Trail, which goes all the way to Ashland!

Wisconsin Point

Although we mentioned this fun spot during our Superior WI Attractions for kiddos and families, Superior Funland bears repeating and taking a closer look at what this amusing place has to offer!

On those dreary rainy or snowy days on Lake Superior, it’s comforting to know that there’s a fun (and dry!) place to escape to and let out some energy. Superior Funland has a charming range of activities for kids to engage in. From a designated large jumping area, a playground with a slide, virtual games,arcade-style basketball hoops, and more, there’s something every kiddo and their grownup can enjoy.

Speaking of grown-ups, there’s also a little treat for them. Not many kid’s parks have massage chairs, do they? Well, at Superior Funland, you bet your animal crackers they do! Sit back and relax while your kiddo lets their imagination soar.

Barkers Island Beach

After a fabulously successful restoration project in 2018, Barkers Island Beach has become a go-to spot for those looking for some Superior WI attractions and beach fun.

This beachy Superior WI attractions contains 6.74 acres of public beach access right on Lake Superior! Aside from beach activities, there are also raised boardwalk hiking trails, bird watching, and mini golf for extreme sports goers. And if you’re looking for something to do nearby, the SS Meteor Maritime Museum is fairly close!

Sweeden Sweets (pssst don’t tell your kids unless you really, really want to take them here)

Sweeden Sweets is a delightful and cheery place in which a whole family of sweet tooth fanatics can get lost! What we especially love about this sweet place is that there’s more than just candy to get excited about.

From sitting at an old-school ice cream bar on a swivel stool and ordering yourself some homemade ice cream and a Root Beer off the tap to purchasing some old-timey candy and playing Pinball in the back of the store, this is a trip down memory lane you’ll be happy you skipped along!

Who could resist a water adventure when you’re journeying on Lake Superior? Luckily, among the many wonderful attractions in Superior WI there’s a sporty side! Whether you enjoy your thrilling kicks at the Skate Park or you want to have a relaxing paddle adventure on Lake Superior, Superior has its welcoming arms open.

Canoe & Kayak Rental

Having your own Canoe or kayak is an awesome luxury; just grab your paddles, lunch, and lifevest, and you’re golden! But unless you have a large garage or a handy storage area, where do you put that mini-boat?

It’s reassuring to know that cities like Superior offer Canoe and Kayak rental racks throughout their gorgeous waterfront areas. There are six canoe and kayak rental racks in total at three locations, which are: Barker’s Island, 21st Street Landing, and Woodstock Bay Landing.

For those who love to canoe and kayak but don’t have proper storage for their gear, it’s awesome to see the bridging of the gap and allowing everyone to have a chance to paddle and make memories on Lake Superior.

Fairlawn Mansion

Where Is Shannon’s Stained Glassery?

Shannon’s Stained Glassery isn’t far from the hustle and bustle of Tower Ave’s downtown shops. The Glassery is in the South End of Superior which is just a ten-minute car ride from the restaurants and coffee shops, such as Empire Coffee. Q & A With Shannon from Shannon’s Stained Glassery

Shannon was incredibly kind in our conversations and for taking the time to answer a few questions about the beginning of her journey with Shannon’s Stained Glassery and where the shop and her artistic journey are today.

Not only did I learn a lot about Shannon and the shop, but I was also filled with excitement about stained glass. WARNING: the following joyful Q&A may make you want to take a Stained Glass class; I know I want to!

[On Lake Superior] Stained Glass, and Glass Art as a whole, is such a beautiful medium to work with. Did glass art come to you, or did someone in your life introduce you to it?

[Shannon] A little of both. In 2006 we relocated to Superior, WI from NE Minneapolis, MN. When we moved up our twins were infants and while I am originally from this area I didn’t really know many people.

The house that we own has the original stained glass windows, so my husband suggested that I take classes at the local stained glass store close to our house. I could learn how to fix our windows as well as have an activity outside of the house.

I started taking all sorts of classes including fusing, jewelry, torchwork beads and stained glass. After losing my job in 2012 I was unsure of what direction to go next when my favorite store went up for sale!

Being an artist on Lake Superior must be a dreamy pool of inspiration; do you find that you pull inspiration from being on Lake Superior, or does the lake bring you to a happy place during your creation process?

I would say the lake brings me to a happy place. While I do find I add the Aerial Lift Bridge to many pieces I just really enjoy the fresh air and life of the lake.

Many people remember their first profound memory with their passion, but what do you recall is the moment you wanted to stick with glass art through the cracks, breaks, and beautiful turns?

Art was never a passion of mine, growing up I always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. After 5 years of college that dream didn’t seem like the appropriate path I was headed towards, life took me down another direction to working in accounts receivable.

I loved so much about that field but again life sent me change when I was laid off. I took the summer to find myself and what I wanted to do ‘when I grew up’ when purchasing Peachie’s Stained Glass became an option.

A scary idea but once I inquired about it things fell into place quickly and in November 2012 I reopened Peachie’s as Shannon’s Stained Glassery. It didn’t take long for me to realize that was a great decision for myself and our family.

Shannon’s Stained Glassery lovingly took the reins for Peachie’s Stained Glass some time ago; let the love of glass art carry on! Is there something that you have learned or carried forth from Peachie’s into the shop that’s hustling and bustling today?

While I have made changes and added additional art mediums to our offerings here, many of the values and traditions that Peachie started with have continued to this day. Peachie has always worked very closely with me throughout the years to help me succeed. She is still here to this day teaching most of our night classes.

Your About section on Shannon’s Stained Glassery mentions that you can also help repair broken treasures. Has there been a noteworthy repair project that you’ve done that was challenging but fulfilling?

A recent repair of a rooster lamp!! It has been by far the craziest and toughest repair. When I plugged the lamp in it was so worth all the time as well as the hug when it was picked up!

In 2017 Shannon’s Stained Glassery added a delightful Paint Your Own Pottery Studio! What inspired you to come to that idea, and how has the outcome been?

It was an idea the Peachie had toyed with but never had the chance to add it in. In 2017 everything seemed to fall into place so easily and quickly where we knew it would be a great addition to our studio.

Fused glass is considered a fired art, paint your own pottery is also considered a fired art so it fits well into our repertoire. Families that come in to shop for presents or parents that are shopping for glass and supplies love having that available.

Plus our annual Paint with Santa event on Small Business Saturday is well loved by all ages!!

If someone is interested in working with glass art but they’re feeling hesitant to, what would be your words of reassurance or wisdom to get them on board and give it a whirl?

Just look through our Facebook page at all of the beginners who thought at one point they couldn’t do it or it was just out of reach. Everyone who takes a class here walks away with a piece they love and it is so apparent in their smiley faces in their pictures!

If stained glass isn’t for them then fusing is a great avenue that is incredibly beginner friendly! Mosaics can be a great introduction to glass as well, there is truly something for everyone in this building!!

Would you like to tell us about any big plans or events for Shannon’s Stained Glassery?

This weekend (19th & 20th of April) we have our Spring Open House and Art show, one of two really big events for the year. Glass artists bring in their work for display, everyone receives a prize package plus throughout the sale weekend attendees vote on their favorite.

Also during this open house we have glass brought in special for the event and we put most everything in the store on sale for 20% off. We hold a similar event in the Fall, the only difference is for the art show the artists must stay within a theme.

In May I am one of 200 small businesses that will be attending an event through Meta’s Leader’s Network for National Small Business week. While there we will get the opportunity to advocate for small businesses with our Senators and Representatives. I am very proud to be a voice for our area and other small businesses!

Sweeden Sweets | Candy, Fudge, & More

After visiting this cute sweet tooth hot spot with my husband and family, I’d say that Sweeden Sweets has more than earned the badge of being the Willy Wonka daydream of Downtown Superior. I highly encourage you to follow Sweeden Sweets on Facebook so you can keep an eye out for their daily/weekly specials (Free Fudge Friday, for example)—you don’t want to miss out on that sugary goodness!

With buckets and buckets of saltwater taffy flavors to pick and choose from, a very large selection of fudges to make your mouth water, dozens of interesting popcorn flavors, and, of course, a gigantic selection of candy, this fine shop has got it all! Why, there’s even an ice cream counter and several arcade games.

Speaking of ice cream, not only does Sweeden Sweets have a large and spacious shop that gives them the room to have a cute vintage Ice Cream Counter, but they also make all of their ice cream on location along with their waffle cones. Isn’t that impressive?

Not only are the fantastic candy makers who hustle and bustle inside the Sweeden Sweets kitchen working hard on baking and serving up rich and delicious fudge and other homemade treats, but they’re also churning out ice cream from scratch. Plus, if you’re feeling thirsty, there are root beers on tap and a big selection of tasty soda at the Ice Cream Counter.

You can grab a seat on one of the comfy swivel stools at the counter, order yourself some homemade ice cream, and top it off with a bubbly river of root beer down your giddy throat. All of that is within the ambiance of a candy store: the distant kitchen sounds, the undeniably sweet smell in the air, and the sugary sensations dancing along your taste buds. That’s beyond awesome in my sweet tooth book!

Out of all the Superior WI attractions we’ve visited, this one is making its way to the top of our “sweetest” list. What else does this happy-go-lucky sweet spot have?

Along with ice cream and soda, this cutesy shop offers a huge array of old-fashioned candy as well as candies you know and love, and a unique selection of popcorn with tons of interesting flavors and saltwater taffy that will have your sweet tooth mind reeling.

And I couldn’t forget the likely culprit of the sweet scent that’s laced throughout the entire shop as soon as you open the door, the homemade chocolates and fudge that line the display cases at the front of the store. With fudge flavors that come in and out and free samples, Sweeden Sweets is a must-add to your list of things to do in Superior WI.

Before Sweeden Sweets

It’s quite interesting how many lives an old building can have. Before this brick structure, the Tyomies Building built around 1892, was filled to the brim with sweets (and a cheery & colorful mural painted along its lower exterior), would you guess that it used to house dockworkers or be the home of a speakeasy? Neither would I!

And as a fellow coffee/tea enthusiast myself, I love that for us. There’s nothing better than supporting a local business while you’re on an adventure!

So, the question surfaces: what is it about Empire Coffee that sets it apart from other local coffee shops in Superior WI? Well, hang onto your mugs and scones because I’ve been waiting to get into this coolness.

Imagine a coffee shop that offers a plethora of coffee options on tap, like a local brewery. Expect instead of Ales and IPAs that come running out of the waterfalls of the tap nozzle, it’s delicious coffee from Wisconsin coffee roasters and Minnesota coffee roasters! Such a gourmet experience sounds like it may pinch your wallet, but rest assured that this local coffee shop has its customers in mind with fair prices and excellent flavors.

My first visit to Empire Coffee was incredibly pleasant. Walking inside, I could feel the artistic pulse of the downtown culture by the local artwork decorating the space and the vibe of it all, and I also felt relaxed and eager to order a drink from the delightful aromas I was taking in the moment we entered. (Spoiler alert: the oat milk latte, my go-to, was perfect!)

I was in the lovely company of On Lake Superior’s very own Corey and my dawdling husband, Matt. Together, we got our warm drinks, which were cozied up in their coffee sleeves, and we took a seat around a few extremely comfortable chairs that had a darling view of the local artwork displayed on the walls and enjoyed the good coffee vibes.

We exchanged travel stories and talked about the adventures we wanted to have and places we wished to check out in Duluth while we were in town. It was the perfect coffee shop to sit down and chat, and I was also imagining myself taking my laptop and setting up shop for the day at a table nearby if I had lived in Superior myself. Truthfully, I dearly enjoyed Empire Coffee, and I look forward to scooting my little coffee junkie self down there again whenever I’m visiting Superior.

I always feel so inspired after I’ve read the backstory of a coffee roaster, a coffee shop, a bookstore, or really any local gem! And it also makes me crave some coffee; good thing we went over the menu options, huh?
