From Iowa to the Inland Sea

Simes’ journey to the “Big Water” was not a straight line. Originally from Indianola, Iowa, her love for paddling didn’t begin on the rugged coast of Superior, but on the calm waters of Lake Ahquabi State Park. It was here, renting kayaks day after day to escape the stress of post-college life, that she found her calling.

What started as a therapeutic escape in Iowa eventually led her north to the Apostle Islands in Wisconsin. After years of making the 16-hour round-trip drive just to be near the water—often spending New Year’s Eve alone in a cabin on the North Shore—she finally moved to Bayfield, WI. There, she honed her skills as a guide and achieved her American Canoe Association (ACA) Level 4 Coastal Kayak Instructor certification.

The “Stealth” Expedition Setup

For her circumnavigation, Simes opted for a setup that was deceptively simple. Unlike many expedition paddlers who look like they are moving house, Simes packed everything inside her kayak to maintain a low profile and better performance in wind.

She paddled a Nigel Dennis Kayak (NDK) Explorer LV (Low Volume), a British-made boat renowned for its rough-water handling and expedition pedigree. To manage physical fatigue, she rotated between two Greenland paddles and two Euro-blade paddles, switching muscle groups to keep her body fresh over the long haul.

The Route: 57 Days Counter-Clockwise

Simes launched from Little Sand Bay in the Apostle Islands on June 22, 2022—the day after the summer solstice. Her strategy was to paddle counter-clockwise. This allowed her to start on the familiar South Shore (Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula), warming up her body and mind before crossing into the remote and rugged Canadian North Shore.

The journey spanned 57 days, with 49 days of paddling and 8 days off for weather or rest. She navigated through Sault Ste. Marie, up to Wawa and Marathon, across to Thunder Bay, and down the Minnesota coast back to Wisconsin. While she aimed for a full circumnavigation, she made the tactical decision to cut through the Keweenaw Waterway rather than round the exposed Keweenaw Peninsula, saving the latter for a future expedition to respect the lake’s unpredictable nature.

The Crux: Isolation in Canada

The shift from the populated South Shore to the Canadian coast was abrupt. Simes describes crossing Whitefish Bay and landing on a shoreline of softball-sized cobbles, a stark contrast to the sandy beaches she was used to. It was here that the true solitude set in.

For nearly three weeks, Simes was entirely self-supported, carrying all her food and gear. The isolation reached its peak in Pukaskwa National Park. Lake Superior 3D Art from Azimuth24 Nautical Models

Justin Douthat went to school in Michigan and sailed for several years as a mate on various lake freighters hauling iron ore, stone, and sand throughout the Great Lakes. Life pulled him out to Colorado, where he now lives, and he quickly realized how much he missed the Great Lakes region. About a year ago, he decided to start a business that would allow him to stay connected with the Great Lakes region, build his 3D design skills, and continue that connection to the Great Lakes region — Azimuth24 Nautical Models was the result.

The process of creating these impeccable models of the great lakes starts with meticulously merging topographical and bathymetric data in 3D modeling software. The models are then sent to their 3D printers—some of which take as long as seven days to print. After printing, the models are coated in a protective enamel before epoxy is poured in and hand-brushed to follow the shoreline of the lake. Q & A with Suri Fina Alpaca Farm

It takes a dedicated team filled with heart and passion to make Suri Fina Alpaca Farm the beauty it is, and I had the wonderful opportunity to talk with Abby Klema, the visionary of one of the finest Alpaca farms in Wisconsin, about the origins of Suri Fina and her family’s memories and experiences with the farm.

Not only should you expect to be tickled by some pretty fun and interesting facts, but there’s also a precious story tucked in there that brought little tears to my eyes — talk about a remarkable experience!

‘Suri Fina’ is a beautiful, eye-catching name; how did the Suri Fina Alpaca Farm name come together?

I chose the name Suri Fina Alpaca Farm because we raise the Suri breed of alpaca.

Suri is the more rare of the 2 breeds (suri and huacaya). And fina is spanish for fine.

Suri alpaca is a luxurious fiber, very fine and silky. I wanted the name of the farm to reflect that.

On your website’s About page, it’s mentioned that you’re the chief farmer, dreamer, and persona of the Suri Fina Alpaca Farm; can you recall the first seeds of inspiration and passion that came to you to want to build and pursue this farm?

I think the dream of farming, or living a rural lifestyle was planted early in my childhood.

I grew up in the city of Duluth, and often had a menagerie of pets: bunnies, cats, dogs, hamsters, tropical fish. My aunt had a horse and boarded it outside of town.

One summer she got me riding lessons. I loved it at the farm. I was curious about the kids who boarded the bus after school. I imagined they got to go home to barns and animals and the space to run free.

Are there any interesting Alpaca facts you believe most people aren’t aware of?

Alpacas are in the camel family and they hum.

Yours and your husband Jamie’s son, Miles, has grown up with the farm, based on the sweet pictures on your website. What was it like to witness him grow up in a farm environment, and do you have any favorite memories with your son on the farm?

As a farming parent, I’m never sure how much Miles actually learns or enjoys the farm, but several years ago we had an alpaca give birth in poor weather.

The cria (alpaca newborns are called crias) was out in the elements in the pasture with the herd. We carried the cria back to the barn and put her and her mom in a stall. I told Miles to keep an eye on her while I hurried off to gather supplies.

When I came back, he was blow drying the cria and rubbing her with a towel and telling me all about how the pair was getting on, over the ten minutes I had been gone — exactly what I would have done.

Miles has his own life and interests, but I see that he is growing up with a good farming awareness and that is neat to see.

I’m sure each Alpaca has its own quirky personality, and you get to know them very well! Do alpacas pick favorites?

Do alpacas pick favorites? Like favorite people? Not sure.

But Rhyme likes to approach me for back scratches.

Bane is often watching me from a safe distance.

McKayla seems to enjoy young visitors and seems to enjoy having them fawn over her.

I can only imagine that there’s a lot of love, care, and especially hard work that revolves around the days. On particularly challenging days, is there something you say to yourself to get you through that tough moment? Has working on a farm taught you lessons you wouldn’t have received otherwise?

Take the good with the bad. As with anything in life there will be losses, struggles, things that didn’t work out as planned, same on a farm.

I try to focus on the things I can control and not dwell on bad things that happen. There are a lot of emotional ups and downs, and I have learned to let the emotions come, but to lace up those boots and keep on keeping on.

Farming is a long game and showing up day after day is what it takes to survive. Experience also has taught me that even though there are struggles, it will work out in the end.

This is my 16th year farming!

From the fun and cute pictures on the Suri Fina Alpaca Farm, I can see a lot of critters aside from Alpacas that are moving and grooving there! What other critters do you, your husband, and your son care for, and how does everyone coexist?

Right now in addition to the alpacas we have a flock of laying hens. We have transitioned to only having chickens on the farm during the warm months. We take a 2-3 month break from chickens in the winter.

We have had ducks, a llama, and feeder pigs in the past. The pigs were especially fun, they have goofy personalities and make the greatest noises.

We boarded a horse for a short time and also pastured a friend’s cows one summer.

We have 2 cats and used to have a friendly St Bernard. We may find the right dog again in the future.

My husband and I had so much fun attending a public event in the winter a few years ago at Suri Fina Alpaca Farm; I love that you host events for the public! Has an event in the past stuck in your mind the most? And are there any events in the future you’d like to tell us about?

I’m so glad you enjoyed your visit to the farm. We always host a free event on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It is fun to see families spending time together and making memories here at the farm.

Our signature farm experience is called our Alpaca Meet & Greet. We learn about the alpacas, how to interact safely with them, we feed the alpacas, take instant photos and selfies, and then walk with them up to their grazing pasture. It is about an hour long experience and is great for all ages. We have this tour available Thursday-Saturday during the warmer months.

Currently folks can book these through October on our website (we do need folks to book 24hrs in advance). We also host some artsy type workshops and events on the farm.

Sept 28 is an ECO-Print workshop where a local flower farmer is helping make flower prints on silk. And then October 12 the same farmer is showing us how to make dried flower wreaths. All of the information is linked on the Experiences page of our website.

The best way for folks to keep up to date with events is to subscribe to our farm mailing list, I try to get emails out in time for folks so they can take advantage of what we have to offer.

People tell me that they love our farm, that it feels really good here, and has good energy. I’m going to keep on going and keep that positive energy going into the future.

In the Anishinaabe (or Ojibwe) language the island is known as, Mooniingwanekaaning. The island is the ancestral homeland of Lake Superior Anishinaabe and it was ceded to the United States by the Treaty of La Pointe in 1842 (negotiated and signed on the island, just like the subsequent treaty in 1854).

The Madeline Island Museum was first opened in 1958 by Bella and Leo Capser, who had been long-time residents of the island. The museum is located on the former site of the American Fur Company. A decade later, it was transferred to the Wisconsin Historical Society, which continues to manage the site. In the 1990s, the main building of the museum was constructed.

Today, Madeline Island Museum consists of the main building which houses a gift shop, a theater, and several exhibit spaces, including the main exhibit space, where Passage is currently displayed. This building is connected to historic buildings of the American Fur Company, including their warehouse.

“Passages: Ojibwe Migration to the Place Where the Food Grows on the Water”

“Passages” debuted when the Madeline Island Museum open in May of 2024.

Passages features a mix of text, historic photos, maps, historic petitions and treaties, displayed on the outside wall of the exhibit room. Moving clockwise around the room from the opening up panels, visitors learn about Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) perspectives on the Apostle Islands and surrounding region, their migration story to the region, Chief Buffalo’s 1852 journey to Washington after the Sandy Lake Tragedy, the Oshcabawis Pictograph, and the Treaty of La Pointe in 1854.

Overall, the exhibit tells engaging, interconnected stories that will deepen visitors’ sense of place for Madeline Island, the Apostle Islands, and the Chequamegon Bay region. The panels frequently incorporate ojibwemowin (the Ojibwe language) and quotations from Anishinaabe citizens throughout the western Lake Superior watershed. Screen shares stories and knowledge from Anishinaabe citizens of Bad River and Red Cliff, and in one corner, a film screens the award-winning documentary Bad River (with a bench so visitors who want to take in part of the film are welcome to take a break).

It’s no secret that I love maps, and the maps were one aspect of the exhibit that I particularly enjoyed. Throughout the exhibit, maps are used to situate the stories and narratives. Historic maps are also included in the panels. These maps are interpreted through Anishinaabe perspectives, illustrating Anishinaabe people’s environmental knowledge that has been passed on through generations.

“Passages” also does an excellent job displaying and interpreting the Oshcabawis Pictograph and panels displaying the full text of the Treaty of La Pointe from 1854. The panel also highlights and enlarges particularly significant passages of the treaty, like Article 2 which discusses where Anishinaabe people’s reservations in the western Lake Superior watershed will be located. This is one of the most effective displays of a treaty I’ve seen in a museum.

Potential Places for Expansion

The only place where I feel “Passages” could benefit from more context is the big jump from the Anishinaabe migration to Madeline Island to the Sandy Lake Tragedy. I know space (and time and budget) are always the realistic limitations of exhibits. In an imaginary world with unlimited exhibit space and resources, I’d love to see a panel on relationships between Anishinaabe people and new arrivals working in the fur trade (French, British, Americans, etc.) to help fill this gap.

This could also be a place to mention the island’s namesake, Madeline Cadotte (usually spelled as Ikwezewe in the Fiero double vowel orthography and is commonly spelled as Equaysayway in primary sources). Her life and her family’s lives are an example of how involvement in the fur trade led to many passages throughout the Great Lakes for Anishinaabe and other Indigenous peoples.

The fur trade also connects to the Sandy Lake Tragedy. Brenda Child (Red Lake) and other historians have shown how the mid-19^th century also corresponds with a demographic shift in (American territory) of the western Lake Superior watershed. Until this point, since European arrival in the area, Anishinaabe peoples were the demographic majority. However, from the mid-1800s on, Euro-Americans become the demographic majority.

Material Culture That Connects Past and Present

To me, the highlight of “Passages” is the stunning display of three canoes in the center of the room. They are a striking visual representation of the theme “Passages” and make clear connections between the knowledge and craftsmanship of Indigenous peoples in the Apostle Islands region across generations.

The center canoe is a dugout canoe made from white pine. Originally found on Madeline Island, it is part of the museum’s collection and is usually displayed in the old museum building. Another canoe is a birch bark canoe with a cedar bark sail constructed by the Great Lakes Lifeways Institute in 2023 constructed using traditional methods. The other is a dugout canoe made from white pine from the Red Lake Tribal Nation constructed in 2022 by the Great Lakes Lifeways Institute.

Together, the three canoes are an excellent example of how, despite political and environmental challenges, Indigenous peoples continue to adapt the methods used for generations so that these traditions endure into the present day.

This is the power of material culture—it serves a concrete connection across time and space.

“Passages” will probably also be on display at the Madeline Island Museum next year, but there may be additions or other changes, so I recommend visiting this fall if possible. I particularly recommend a visit if you live in the Chequamegon Bay area or a nearby region. While it is important for tourists to develop a deeper sense of place by learning Anishinaabe histories of the region, it is even more important for people who live on ceded territory in the region.

Take Your Own Journey to View Passages!

I’ve enjoyed all the rotating exhibits at the Madeline Island Museum since 2017, and “Passages” is definitely a favorite. Visitors can view “Passages” at the Madeline Island Museum till the end of the season.

The Madeline Island Museum is currently open 10 am to 5 pm from Wednesday to Sunday until October 19. Visitors must take the ferry from Bayfield (or their own boat) to get to the museum. The museum is about a block away from the ferry docks on the island, so if it’s the main reason for your visit, you don’t need to take a vehicle. However, if you want to explore Big Bay Town Park or Big Bay State Park after visiting the museum, you should take a vehicle (or bike).

If you are new to making trips to Madeline Island, familiarize yourself with the ferry schedule and what businesses are open and what their hours are. Remember, La Pointe is a small town, and while a lot of tourists visit, it has more limited amenities than what some tourists may be used to. If you prepare in advance, you are more likely to enjoy your trip!

Geologic Differences Between Pictured Rocks and Apostle Islands

Both areas have striking geology, but there’s also distinct differences. The majority of Apostle Islands is Jacobsville sandstone, which is very old (approx 1 billion years old). Jacobsville sandstone also makes up the bottom layer of Pictured Rocks. But most of the visible sandstone is the much younger Munising formation (approx 500 million years old).

The Pictured Rocks boat cruise is more dramatic than the Apostle Islands. The cliffs are higher, the sandstone colors are more varied, there’s more picturesque rock formations, and there’s more waterfalls. However, you’ll see more evidence of human impact (lighthouses, modern docks and ranger stations, historic fish camps) on the Apostle Islands Tour.

However, if you’re boating/sailing/sea kayaking, there are a lot more options in the Apostle Islands. You can pick routes and launch points based on wind. It can be calm on one side of the Bayfield Peninsula, while there’s significant waves on the other.

Pictured Rocks has higher cliffs and more lakeside waterfalls. Apostle Islands has more sea stacks and caves. This is one of the reasons sea kayaking among the islands is so great. It also makes for awesome boating and sailing.

There are also some really top-notch rivers for paddling (like the Bois Brule, the White River, the Namekagon) and inland wetland areas near the Apostle Islands.

Hiking, Swimming, and Beach-going

The Apostle Islands has several short (less than 5 miles) day hikes along the lake shore. Pictured Rocks is better for backpacking and longer day hikes along the lakeshore. The Chapel-Mosquito Loop hike at Pictured Rocks is often cited as the best hike in Michigan. It’s approximately 10 miles. The Meyer’s Beach Sea Cave hike at the Apostle Islands is like a mini version, and it’s an out-and-back. If you hike the first 2 miles (for a 4 mile round trip hike), you get to see beautiful lakeshore views.

The Apostle Islands has better swimming. You have a wide variety of shallower beach areas on both sides of the peninsula. I think the Apostle Islands area has the best swimming beaches in the Lake Superior region. I find the water temp is often milder than some parts of northern Lake Michigan and Lake Huron that are less protected and more exposed to deep water. Pictured Rocks has the Grand Sable Dunes and the Log Slide. And they’re both epic. Personally they’re my favorite dunes in Michigan (which has by far the best dunes in the whole state).

Exploring Nearby Towns

Both areas have a range of options for small towns and for lodging from motels to rustic camping. Munising sits at the west end of Pictured Rocks (and is where cruises depart from) and Grand Marais at the east. I prefer Grand Marais for it’s off-the-beaten-track, quirky small town vibes. Munising has a lot more amenities. There’s also a variety of smaller communities inland in the area. I haven’t spent enough time dining in either community in the past couple of years to comment on the dining options. We are usually camping and cooking our own food.

Bayfield is the gateway to the Apostle Islands. It’s got great historic architecture and is the launch point for the cruises and the ferry to Madeline Island. It’s got a lot of locally owned businesses, including 2 amazing independent bookstores and about half a dozen restaurants open in the summer. Washburn, Ashland, Cornucopia, Herbster, and Port Wing are all nearby towns along the Bayfield Peninsula and the Chequamegon Bay. Personally, if you want less touristy vibes, I highly recommend Cornucopia. It’s got a great beach, a really cute marina, and some fun dining options.

South of both are hundreds of miles of national forest lands, including networks of inland lakes, rivers, and wetlands. This provides lots of options for hiking, paddling, and off-roading.

Which to Choose for Your Adventures?

To me, Pictured Rocks is breathtaking and dramatic on a large scale. The sheer cliffs. The stunning sandstone shapes like Miner’s Castle and Chapel Rock. The waterfalls along the lake, including Spray Falls–the most dramatic of them all. The big waves the lake kicks up along that coast. The huge dunes. The highs and lows of backpacking. Coming up for front country camping in May before the crowds and seeing the effects of the winter along sandstone cliffs. Pictured Rocks is what first made me instantly fall in love with the UP and the whole south shore of Lake Superior.

I fell in love with the Apostles more slowly, over time, on a smaller scale. I loved the feel of singing sand between my toes, laid-back days at the beach in mild water, wetlands areas with carnivorous plants like pitcher plants and sundews, the ways the waves carve intricate holes, caves, and arches in the sandstone shore, and the constantly changing and shifting way the river mouths and beaches are resculpted after storms. If you know the place, you see the dramatic change. If you are just passing through, it may seem like just another river mouth and sand beach.

I could never choose just one. I love them both.
