Ever since I can remember Frankie’s Pizza has been a must-stop whenever my family came ‘Up North‘ to visit my Great Grandparents in Ashland. And to this day when my Husband and I travel to be on Lake Superior, one of our favorite spots in the world, we’ve gotta stop and have a slice at Frankie’s!

So, what makes this pizza joint special and a continuous choice for pizza lovers searching for places to eat in Ashland? Tag along, and find out!

Where is Frankie’s Pizza?

Frankie’s Pizza is located on Lake Shore Dr East (AKA US Highway 2); you can’t miss it as you’re driving down the road and you see it’s wooden exterior and that classic Frankie’s sign. This place may not look super big from the outside, but don’t let looks deceive you. There’s cozy booths and long tables, and even outdoor seating in the back during summer months, so they can easily accommodate a family meal or a get together with friends.

The Frankie’s Pizza Experience

Frankie’s Pizza is a corner stone in many family dinners that have taken place on Lake Superior, and my family is one of them. From as far back as I can remember, we’ve scooted in our chairs and enjoyed the one-of-a-kind Frankie’s Pizza in an atmosphere of laughs and wholesomeness. If I close my eyes, I can smell the pizza toppings and hear the arcade games catch phrases; Frankie’s is like your pizza home away from home.

I have a few favorite memories from this establishment; one from my childhood, and the other with my Husband years and years later.

I was fascinated by jukeboxes and music when I was growing up, especially classic rock. I can remember using the few dollars I had to play a few of my favorite Beatles and Elton John songs, the restaurant fairly empty aside from our big family, and suddenly the head cook popped out. He asked who was playing the music, and in my shyness I told him it was me. To my surprise, he gave me some more money and told me to keep on playing the good stuff! Whenever I see a jukebox, I can’t help but think of that jazzy memory and Frankie’s Pizza still has a digital jukebox hanging on the wall for you to play some tunes & bring back some memories as well.

Another Frankie’s inspired memory I have is with my husband, my boyfriend at the time, on one of our very first Dawdles. It was his first trip to Ashland, so we had to stop at Frankie’s Pizza of course! We ordered a pizza to go, drove up to Washburn, and had a picnic on the beach. It was a perfect Summer day on Lake Superior.

And from our editor, Corey, comes this memory: “The round pizzas, cut criss-cross style into squares, were a staple in my family’s history in Ashland and on the road. After some of the family moved away from the Ashland area, my uncle would bring us ready-to-bake Frankie’s pizzas whether we were at the cabin in Minnesota or even all the way in California one time! Frankie’s is a source of comfort and memories for our family and a lot of others in the Ashland area. In fact, we just had a family get-together at Frankie’s this summer!”

The walls inside of Frankie’s may not be decked out with contemporary decor (we like the homey charm!), but if their walls could talk, they’d be decorated in hundreds of pure memories of laughter, celebration, togetherness, and darn good pizza.

History of the Sandbar Cafe, Blue Wave Inn, and Solstice Outdoors

As a kid, I remember the retail store Bodin’s on the Lake in the spot where the building housing the Sandbar coffee shop, Blue Wave Inn, and Solstice Outdoors now stands — just east of Maslowski Beach (also known as “Sandbar Beach” by locals). Do you remember the giant fish outside the Bodin’s store along the highway? It’s now over on the other side of the highway at the River Rock Inn & Bait Shop, just painted a bit differently.

The unique building which the three businesses now call home was originally developed by Ashland native Jim Hagstrom in 2012 and opened in 2015. Jim and his wife Beth purchased the property, and their son & architect Brian created the nautical looking complex then known as Blue Wave on the Bay.

Current owners Katie and Dave Gellatly took over the operation a few years later, after the Hagstroms had donated the property to Northland College. Today, the Gellaty family continues to manage the businesses, with their Solstice Outdoors shop anchoring the building and providing both retail and rental services — heck, you can paddleboard or kayak right outside the door! And the paved lakeside trail heads from the Sandbar Cafe to the other end of Ashland, then through town along the old railroad corridor. So you can easily walk or bike to & from Solstice & Sandbar as well.

What’s on the Menu at the Sandbar Cafe?

I may be partial to the coffee at the Sandbar Cafe (hot dark mocha, thank you very much), but they also have excellent food choices and a bar if you feel like grabbing an adult beverage. I’ve happily worked my way through their complete sandwich menu and from my point of view there’s not a bad one in the bunch — I think I’ve had them all more than once. They also have great breakfast offerings and tasty pastries, along with appetizers & salads. You really can’t go wrong with a food & drink order at the Sandbar.

A great bonus feature of the Sandbar coffee shop in Ashland, WI is its proximity to the local artesian well in the Masklowski Beach parking area. This continuously-flowing source of pure, clean water is available to the public and a spot where we fill up our water containers every time we’re in town. Fun fact: the Sandbar Cafe also has their own artesian spring right outside the door for on-demand artesian water right as you walk inside.

Since 1998, this gorgeous building has housed the memories of thousands of visitors (myself included!), countless exciting facts, intriguing exhibits, and the beautiful opportunity to walk alongside nature. Not every city is as lucky as Ashland, WI to have a fabulous Visitor Center in their town that can provide a place for learning, exploring, and appreciating the natural beauties and history around it.

All this and more are on the same stunning grounds, and it’s free admission? You bet your On Lake Superior dollar that this is a must-add to anyone’s ‘On Lake Superior Bucket List‘ for any and every season! That said, let’s learn more about this remarkable facility and all the fun there is to be had there.

As I briefly mentioned above, I have a handful of wholesome memories at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, ranging from when I was a child to dawdling there with my Husband. Each time I visit, I find a new favorite nook within the visitor center, and I’ve collected yet another precious memory to add to my mind’s On Lake Superior memory bank.

What’s so wonderful about the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is that it truly has something for everyone. Whether it’s your first time visiting the Lake Superior area or you’ve been a life-long resident, this place is full of interesting exhibits, future events, film-viewing opportunities, and more!

When I was a youngster, my Mom, who is also a terrific writer On Lake Superior, would bring my siblings and me to the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center when we were ‘Up North‘ visiting my Great-Grandparents. We would spend hours there exploring the interactive exhibits, discovering new facts about the wildlife and profound history surrounding the Ashland area, and filling our minds with knowledge and our hearts full of fun.

One thing I absolutely loved that my Mom would do for us was write up a Scavenger Hunt before we went and hand it out to us when we got there. She would have little prizes for us, and we got to explore even more of the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center; is that a creative idea to keep kiddos busy or what?

Another fond memory I have of the visitor center is a recent one with my husband. He and I love to dawdle together, and during one of our winter visits, our dawdling brought us to the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. Another terrific thing about a place like the nicely built visitor center that Ashland has is that it’s somewhere entertaining you can go when the weather isn’t all that great. We love that!

I wanted to show my husband the hallways upon hallways of memories I had there, as well as all of the history, art, and amazing facts that I knew he’d love to absorb.

We ended up spending a large chunk of time there, admiring the gorgeous artwork in the charming art gallery, reading the plaques with interesting information, gazing at extravagant quilts, checking out the gift shop, and spending the majority of the time in a quiet part of the building where you can watch the ducks in the pond below.

Those peaceful moments play out in my head often, and I’m thankful the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is a place where everyone can go and enjoy its many fine qualities.

Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge

Protecting and educating about the Lake Superior wetlands, located near the visitor center, is the Whittlesey Creek National Wildlife Refuge vessel. If you check out their map, you can see the vast area of wetlands it protects and the trails provided by the visitor center that patrons are welcome to hike and walk on.

Wisconsin Historical Society History Center & Archives + Services

The Wisconsin Historical Society has set up shop within the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center and, at times, can be a potential resource for researchers and genealogists seeking a deeper understanding of the ancestors who called this area home long before we did.

The History of Vaughn Public Library

The Vaughn Public Library is home to thousands of stories, embedded within its foundation, the plaster on the walls, and the busied sidewalks that surround it is a story enriched with local history in itself of how the Vaughn Public Library came to be.

I will be paraphrasing a very brief history of Vaughn Public Library from the history section on the Vaughn Public Library website. The Vaughn Public Library’s humble beginnings started around 1872. Though it was not officially created yet, the Ashland Library Association was breathed into the shuffle of Ashland’s civic duties, and years later, in 1976, established in a reading room within the City Clerk’s office surrounded by stacks of books where we first get a glimpse of the beloved Vaughn Public Library.

The beginnings of the Vaughn Public Library we see today, and the classic name itself, comes from married couple Samuel and Emeline Vaughn. These visionaries sought out a mission to bring books and public space to the city of Ashland so that it could further grow, expand, and be enriched with the love and power of books.

Sadly, Samuel Vaughn passed away before he could see their aspirations blossom, but his wife, Emeline Vaughn, was an obvious person of drive and dedication, for she saw their dream through. In the brisk of November in 1888, the doors of Vaughn Public Library were opened with around three thousand and five hundred books to enjoy. Below is a quoted response to what Emeline Vaughn said about her vision for the Vaughn Public Library.

Proudly and impressively, Vaughn Public Library is the oldest library in Wisconsin to be operating in its original building; that’s quite the achievement!

2. The largest public library in the state of Wisconsin is the Milwaukee Public Library, with a bustling thirteen branches and a serving population of 594,833 patrons. That’s a lot of public access to books; how amazing is that!
3. On the topic of big dogs (or, shall I say, big books) in the library game, where is the largest library in the United States? That would be none other than the famous Library of Congress located in Washington, D.C. This powerhouse of knowledge and stories is also the largest library in the WORLD!
4. According to Wisconsin State Legislative documents (serious business), the grand ole Dairy State has a total of 389 municipal and county libraries that are currently in service. And hopefully, more to come!
5. Now that we know how many libraries are in Wisconsin, which state has the most public libraries? As of 2020, in the calculations of WordsRated.com, California takes home the paperback crown for housing a whooping 1,226 public libraries.
6. If you want to see the tallest library in the United States you’ll have to take a stroll to the University of Massachusetts, but I don’t think you’ll have a hard time finding it with its great height. This academic library stands at a gigantic 286.5 feet and houses around six million books! I’d apply to hang out in the library!
7. Want to hear something ironic? According to Pantagraph.com, the Guinness Book of World Records, you know, those books we all ran to check out first and gape at outrageous and quirky achievements worldwide, has the record for being the most stolen book from libraries– how nuts is that!
8. New York City, as we all know, is one incredibly vast city that’s full of bustling folks. You know what that means, right? Big city, bigger library! It took around fourteen years (1897-1911) to build the New York Public Library (Main Branch). That’s quite a lot of time, but I’m sure it was worth every year for all of the patrons it serves every day.
9. Another NYC Public Library fact is coming your way! The most checked-out book of ALL TIME at the NYC Public Library is “The Snow Day” by Ezra Jack Keats, and it has borrowed (so far) a total of 485,583 times. That’s a lot of bookworm hands it’s passed through and many bookish hearts this story has touched. Runner-up is “The Cat in the Hat” by Dr. Seuss (469,650), and coming in third is “1984” by George Orwell (441,770).
10. Have you seen those adorable mini-libraries in neighborhoods? Those are Little Free Libraries! And you can’t believe how many there are around the entire world on all the continents (yep, including Antarctica!); there are more than 150,000!

What I adore about Spinster Books is the commitment to the community and the mission of providing books to everyone. I saw a while back on Spinster Books Facebook Group that during 2020, story time videos would be posted so the love of books and stories could carry on even when people couldn’t physically gather for story time. How wholesome and community-driven is that?

I also had such a delightful time talking with the owner/creator of Spinster Books, Jill, and have been giddy and thrilled to share our conversation. It makes me want to have a reading marathon right in Spinster Books and then buy some more books while I’m at it!

Q & A With Spinster Books

Let’s hear directly from the creator of this quirky book oasis, the owner and showrunner herself, Jill! I had such a pleasant and lovely time communicating with Jill about this fantastic bookish gem in the heart of Ashland, WI. Each answer is full of passion, humor, insight, and a whole lot of book and community love.

When you’re book shopping in Ashland, you’ve got to come on down to Spinster Books! And with that being said, let’s get into this fabulous Q&A with Jill at Spinster Books.

Could you please tell us a bit about yourself and your journey to creating Spinster Books?

I worked in my college library for 3 1/2 years in various roles. I got bitten by the book bug.

I worked at a Waldenbooks for a while when I was living in Denver and got further hooked. After I moved back to Ashland, I volunteered at our local library’s Book Nook, where we sold used books at very affordable prices. I did that for about 6 years and decided to open my own store in town.

I guess I just needed more books in my life. I brought my mom along with me at the start and she still works at the store. 

Spinster Books has a neat ring to it; how did that name come to you?

Spinster Books is exactly what you get when you come in.

I am the Spinster, an older, unmarried woman with no children and the books are the Books.

The history of the word Spinster intrigued me and I wanted to reclaim it in a positive way.

Spinster by choice, not by circumstance.

If someone would like to bring books into the store, how should they go about that process?

A phone call or message first is the best way to go.

I can save people time by letting them know if they should bring their books in to us before they actually haul them around. Many times, people just show up with books and that’s fine, too.

We can give store credit for books that we can sell in the store and people can either take the other books back with them, or they can put them in our covered entryway for people to take for free. Kind of an oversized Free Little Library.

We sometimes go to someone’s house if there are many books to look at, but being as The Spinster is getting older and has a tiny car, they oftentimes bring them into the bookstore anyway.

What do you love about being a local bookstore near Lake Superior?

You answered that question right there. Local, bookstore, Lake Superior.

Small business started this country, bookstores have endured when they were doomed to die in the electronic age and Lake Superior is the best of all bodies of water.

I can look out our back door and see the lake just across the street.

Can you name a few of your favorite things about running a bookstore?

I like the independence that I have. My mother is my business partner and handles the money part of the business, accounting, banking and also the preparation of books – all used books get cleaned before being put out for sale. This has been our policy from day one – almost 9 years ago.

I get to run the store as I see fit and get to make decisions without a boss. I never really worked well for other people, so owning my own business is a dream come true.

The best part, aside from all of the books, is the people. I have met so many people and made so many friends through the store that I can’t imagine life without them.

These people also get me involved in other community things that are now part of my life. Our locals are nice people who appreciate what we do for them, and in return, we appreciate their business and friendship.

The tourists who are awed at our store still crack me up. A cool bookstore? Here? Yup, here. We have many return customers that are not from the area.

Do you have books or authors that are your comfort reads?

I read mainly non-fiction – it’s a bit of a joke in the store with so many fiction readers and me struggling to stay knowledgeable about what is hot and new.

My favorites are books about books, bookstores, book history, book making, etc.

On the fiction side, depressing German and Russian authors have my heart. LOL

If Spinster Books had a theme song, which catchy tune would it be and why?

Interesting question but one easily answered this GenX person: The theme song to the TV show “One Day At A Time” …

Can you share more with us about your inspiration for providing Loose/Bulk Legos at Spinster Books?

I just got into LEGO®​​ about 7 years ago. I didn’t have any as a kid – I was a goofy outdoor type – and I got hooked.

It’s a common story among AFOLS (Adult Fans of LEGO®​​). When I realized that there was nowhere to buy LEGO®​​ in the area, and most certainly nowhere to buy “loose” LEGO ®​​ for an even farther area, I decided to do what I could to have some at the store.

I don’t sell enough new sets to qualify as an official LEGO®​​ retailer, but I do what I can to offer what the community needs… some new sets, some used sets, some exclusive sets and bulk/loose pieces.

The LEGO®​​ part of the business is definitely NOT a money maker, but then I never claimed to be a smart businessperson.

What’s one of your favorite memories to look back on at Spinster Books?

Opening day, May 1st, 2015, without a doubt.

My mom and I had already decided that this was a risky venture and were fully prepared to close in 6 months when it all failed.

That first day, with a store full of happy customers, gave us a feeling of “maybe this will work”. I still feel that every day, almost 9 years later.

I’m never quite sure that we are a success, despite still being in business. LOL We don’t advertise and rely on word-of-mouth. It’s working so far.

Why You Should Experience the Ashland Historical Museum for Yourself

Whether you’re traveling or you live in or around the Ashland area, taking the time to check out local establishments is an enriching, entertaining, and fulfilling activity to engage in. It’s the main goal for my and my husband’s dawdling adventures! Centering your afternoon or vacation around local establishments and entertainment is grounding, rewarding, and filled with surprise and extra adventure.

There’s something remarkably simple yet magical about slowing down and checking out a city’s downtown area. Checking out the local vibe, exploring hidden gems, and learning about the area you’re dawdling about in.

The first trip my husband and I took together to Ashland was in the summer of 2020. I had relatives in Ashland, so Ashland is like my home away from home. I had always expressed fond memories there to him, and he wanted to plan a trip for us both to make memories there and see all of the spots I loved. What a fella!

During our trip, we went for a stroll along Ashland’s main drag, and we came across the Ashland Historical Museum. We were giddy to stop in and check things out while we were gazing at things to do in Ashland WI. And we were so glad we did because it became one of the highlights of our trip!

Inside the Ashland Historical Museum were informational displays, neat souvenirs you can purchase, books, photographs, and even records with a record player you can listen to them on! The volunteers inside were super kind and excited to see us pop in. There’s nothing like being sweetly greeted when you come inside of a place you haven’t been to before; it makes you feel like you belong.

We stopped by the records for a little bit, looking at the music we both knew and some that was new to us. The sweet volunteers encouraged us to put on any records we’d like. Not only did we put on some good tunes, the two of us ended up dancing and the volunteers were our little audience!

Now, if that kind of story doesn’t encourage you to jot down Ashland Historical Museum on your list of unique things to do in Ashland WI, keep on reading because the amazing experience didn’t stop there!

I mentioned at the beginning of this article that I had family ties in Ashland. My Great Grandparents were from this area, and the same with my Grandma and Great Aunt. And, eventually, my Mother and Aunt were regulars around Ashland’s stomping grounds which later trickled down to my sisters and me! Ashland is our family’s oasis, a harbor of delightful memories and love.

So, with that in mind, when my Husband and I saw the collection of High School yearbooks, we quickly fell into a mission of finding my Great Grandparent’s high school photos. It was a wholesome adrenaline rush combing through the years, calling my Mom for an estimated graduation date until we finally came across their names.

I nearly cried tears of wholesome joy from the search for it, to see photos and memories of my Grandparents I had never seen before. Out of all the things to do in Ashland WI, that we got up to that trip, that was by far one of the most fulfilling and sweet experiences.

Of course, my experience at the Ashland Historical Museum is unique to my situation; that’s the exciting part about museums in WI. Everyone can have their own kind of experience connecting with the history that sits there waiting to be absorbed and appreciated. I know when my Husband and I go back for a vacation on Lake Superior, we’ll be curious to stop back into the Ashland Historical Museum and see what’s new (or, shall I say, old).

The Ashland Historical Museum is located on Main Street West with a gorgeous view of Lake Superior. A few blocks away (about a seven-minute walk down Ashland’s delightful Main Street, past the Movie Theatre and the Library) from Black Cat Coffee, where you can sit and enjoy a local cup of joe and talk about all of the interesting events, stories, and facts you picked up at the Ashland Historical Museum.

Q & A With Ashland Historical Museum

The Ashland Historical Museum is full of rich local history that is sure to take you on a voyage outside of your daily life and bring you back to your reality with a different state of mind. I had the lovely opportunity to ask the Board President of the Ashland Historical Museum, Tory Stroshane, a few questions about this fantastic establishment.

So please, don’t just take my word for it; let’s read these insightful and informational responses about the Ashland Historical Museum!

When did the Ashland Historical Society Museum come about, and what was the inspiration behind it? And similarly, who brought the Ashland Historical Society Museum to life?

The existence of the Ashland Museum was first noted in 1909 with a letter written by the director of the Historical Museum of the city of Ashland. It was located in the Ashland High School building on Ellis Avenue between tenth and eleventh streets. The letter states that they had valuable donations of historical and archeological material from Beloit College, the Wisconsin Historical Society and the Milwaukee Museum.

The next evidence of efforts in preserving Ashland’s history came from the minutes of the Old Settler’s Club of Ashland, organized in 1924. They were diligent in staging picnics and gatherings where old stories could be told and re-told. They also worked to document the events of early Ashland. In 1925 their meetings were held in the community room of the First National Bank.

In 1954, Miss Cora Angvick put together a historical display in their furniture store in connection with the Centennial of the founding of Ashland. She gathered old photographs, and artifacts to create an exhibit in Angvick’s old storefront. When the celebration was over, the exhibit was moved to the new store’s basement to be enjoyed by all who dropped by.

In about 1962, the Museum was moved to the Vaughn Library building, under the advice of Dr. John Kreher. This proved to be a wise move when the Angvick’s Store burned to the ground in June of 1967. The Museum was housed at the library until the 1980’s, when the Vaughn Library was remodeled. Following the remodeling at the library, the Museum was housed on the second floor until 1993.

The next home for the Ashland Museum was the Wilmarth Mansion at 523 Chapple Avenue. This spacious home with its beautiful woodwork was a wonderful setting for the Museum until problems with the roof and leakage damage caused the Historical Society to once again search out an appropriate and affordable home for its vast collections.

In February of 2000, the Ashland Museum moved to 509 West Main Street, housed in the historic business section of Ashland. Due to space restraints, not all the collections are out at one time, but displays are rotated to provide interest throughout the year.

In July of 2016, the museum was given an eviction notice and moved in August to the historic Appleyard building at 216 Main Street West owned by Attorney Scott Clark. It doubled our display space and has become a wonderful addition to Main Street. Maintaining a space twice as large as before requires a lot of effort and money, so we are thankful for our loyal members.

How has the Ashland Historical Society Museum evolved over time?

As far as evolving, we fully rely on our computer data banks and programs such as ancestry.com and newspapers.com. That has definitely changed how we can help our visitors. We did more informational programs before Covid shut things down.

What are some of the best things about being an establishment near Lake Superior?

Being close to the highway in a tourist town on the shores of Lake Superior brings in lots of visitors. The shipping history is of special interest to folks, as well as the lumbering and railroads.

Are there any fun or touching moments that the Ashland Historical Society Museum has experienced with its Patrons?

In recent years, we have built partnerships within the community that we value. The school system, Northland College, the Ashland County Courthouse, NGLVC with the Wisconsin research arc, Tamarack MMC, the Chamber, the local newspaper, the City, the VFW and Legion and local historical societies are some of these. When we had to move to a new location after being evicted without warning, the townspeople and certain local groups pitched in with money and help.

Our annual Cemetery “Ghost” Walk is especially well-liked and attended. We hold it every July 4th and alternate between the two main cemeteries in town.

What are the volunteer’s/employee’s favorite things about running the Ashland Historical Society Museum?

Our volunteers like to connect with visitors and help them find out about their family’s history. Some folks know nothing about their families and it’s rewarding to help them find out about their history.

Is there any exciting news or events that the Ashland Historical Society Museum has in its future?

We share photos and historical events in the local paper every week. Our collection of photographs are very important to us.

We will be opening up after the winter on April 1st. Hours are 10-3, days to be decided.

Our favorite adventures always take place up around Ashland and its beautiful surrounding areas. When we’re cruising on through, or we need a morning/afternoon pick-me-up, Black Cat Coffee Shop is our go-to for a brewlicious delight. From the first time we stopped in, to each time after, we fell in love with the hygge atmosphere, the comfortable seating area in the back, and the fact that you can purchase used books! And after doing some more research prior to writing this article, I came to appreciate Black Cat Coffee Shop even more.

My husband and I are both vegan and although it’s come a long way and many spots are pitching in to offer vegan options, it can be a little dicey at times. When we’re planning our trips we get antsy wondering if the area we’re going in has a vegan-friendly spot. It’s something we took for granted in the past, but not anymore! So we deeply appreciate places like Black Cat Coffee that serve vegan options, as well as vegetarian and gluten-free.

There’s a vital importance to support local coffee and local establishments while you’re on Lake Superior and anywhere your wanderlust feet wander. Supporting local is pouring back into the local economy; it’s supporting a dream turned reality, a place that holds memories and goods for the community and those who come across its path.

When you make a choice to support local coffee, that one choice is pouring into the creation of something special, and you’re helping it remain special in your life, the employee’s and owners’ life, and so many others. Whether we see them or not, our actions have ripple effects, and making a positive (and don’t forget delicious) choice to support local coffee is one that you won’t regret. Local is the [black] cat’s pajamas!

Where Does Book Across the Bay Take Place?

Book Across the Bay is a 10k adventure that previously started in Ashland and grooved across Lake Superior to the finish line in Washburn. You could then take the trek from Ashland to Washburn and then back to Ashland or arrange a ride of some sort to give your legs a breather. The course is a bit different nowadays but then fun and adventure is just as incredible!

The usual rendezvous takes place around the Ashland Marina, but I would encourage you to keep an eye on Book Across the Bay’s social media pages for more detailed information. You can also take a peek at their Frequently Asked Questions page on their website for further info!

Experiencing Book Across the Bay | Q & A

Book Across the Bay is an event on Lake Superior that folks look forward to all year. A two-day event full of community, embracing winter, bonfires, good food and drinks, entertainment, and personal endurance. But for those of us who haven’t had the opportunity to experience Book Across the Bay, we’re left with curiosity and some lingering questions.

When you’re weighing your options and trying to gauge if something will suit you or not, it’s nice to get a first-hand account of what you’re checking out. That’s why we asked past participant Laura K, who’s a terrific member of our public Facebook Group, Loving Life “On Lake Superior” a few questions about her experience of Book Across the Bay. Also, the amazing pictures intertwined in this article come from Laura K herself!

OLS: How would you describe your experience of Book Across the Bay? Would you do it again?

Laura K:

Book Across the Bay was an exciting experience, it almost felt like being part of a movement there were so many people involved!

Knowing volunteers set up such a large event felt like people made it for me!

It was a physical challenge I had to prepare for, which I don’t really ever participate in other than the gym out on my own, so it was something totally different for me, I would absolutely do it again.

OLS: What was one of your favorite moments during your Book Across the Bay journey?

Laura K:

Seeing all the other people enjoying their time as well was something I enjoyed, most people were focused on getting the course complete so they could get back, but the few that took time to stop at the rest stops and warm themselves by the fires looked like they were so grateful it was there.

I saw a group of 5 that just decided to step off the course and lay on their backs together to watch the stars !! That was so sweet!!

When the first wave of competitors made way back to shore, that’s what the first & arcing waves were about, competition in time & probably personal records, they would shoot off fireworks for those that made it back so quickly! Looking back over your shoulder, hearing & seeing the reflection of the firework in front of me was neat, though it was small because we too were a ways out!

Seeing the stars from miles away from the shore was magnificent!

OLS: Do you have any tips for someone who hasn’t partaken in Book Across the Bay before but would like to give it a go?

Laura K:

I would say to prepare, do workouts pertaining to what what you’re going to do. Snowshoe or cross country ski. Practice.

Practice balance, endurance & acclimation to the weather. Strength train to make it easier on your body.

Just going because you feel you’re in shape is not a great idea!

Being on or close to Lake Superior brings on a cool feeling of inspiration and possibility. Sometimes, you feel like starting a painting or reading a book by the water. Or, in our case, you have the undeniable desire to walk into the coolest tattoo shop around and see what it’s all about.

If you’ve been searching for a unique experience with tattoos in Wisconsin, then Time Warp Tattoo should be at the top of your list. With a welcoming owner/crew, experienced artists, rad music, and an eclectic atmosphere, you’re in for a rockin’ tattin’ ride!

The weekend after our wedding, my Husband and I planned a little getaway in one of our favorite places in the world, on Lake Superior, of course! We had some fun and relaxing things planned while we stayed at The Pilot House in Bayfield, but one of our top itinerary items was experiencing the awesomeness of Time Warp Tattoo.

My Husband happened upon this awesome place when he was searching for tattoos in Wisconsin for our future tat plans. As luck would have it, there was this fantastical tattoo shop in Ashland; we knew we had to check it out.

The artists and crew at Time Warp Tattoo were incredibly welcoming. From my own experience, some tattoo shops/artists can come off as standoffish and not welcoming, and that was the complete opposite of my time at Time Warp Tattoo.

While my Husband and I were waiting, the Manager of the shop, Jesse Marttinez, took the time to talk to us about our tattoo plans and where we came from. Upon finding out that we were Newlyweds, he took this lovely picture of us (below) and captioned it “The Newly Weds” on Time Warp Tattoo’s Facebook page. Talk about making this a personal experience!

Along with an incredible atmosphere and good vibes, there’s an adorably sweet shop dog named Maya Mia (pictured above) who’s there to greet you and even calm your nerves if you’re feeling a bit antsy.

That feeling of anxiousness is totally understandable and normal when you’re waiting for your tattoo appointment, especially if it’s your first tattoo! So it’s incredibly enduring when you see a furry sweet face like Maya Mia, who will come right up to you and sit down for some nice pets. You know you’re in good tattooing hands when a darling pup like her is around.

Out of the tattoo shops in Wisconsin that we’ve both experienced, it’s pretty easy to say that Time Warp Tattoo is the most unique. The walls are full of fascinating art pieces and interesting signs, and that’s just the sitting area and coffee bar! Oh yes, quick pit stop– did we mention Time Warp Tattoo has a COFFEE BAR? Don’t worry, coffee lovers; we’ll get to that magic bean juice in the section below!

What I love about Time Warp Tattoo, besides the fact that they have a wicked atmosphere and coffee, is that it isn’t an exclusive environment. Everyone is welcome, and that also goes for folks who just want to stop by for a good ‘ol cup of joe.

You don’t have to get a tattoo to order a tasty drink from their Warp Coffee Bar, and if you prefer water while you’re waiting for your tattoo, they’ve got you covered. Just knowing the option is there, for either or, makes for an even more special experience.

Tattoo Advice

The best tattoo advice I can suggest to someone who’s thinking about getting a tattoo is do not hesitate to speak up/advocate for yourself if you are uncomfortable or have a question.

Having a tattoo done is a serious and intimate experience. It’s a work of art that’s going to be on your body forever, so you have the absolute right and place to ask a question or change your mind. In an interview I conducted on my old podcast, Heigh-Ho Pistachio, with a talented tattoo artist in Salt Lake City, Sam Walker, expressed how unwelcoming some tattoo artists can be, unfortunately. It’s incredibly important to speak up for yourself if you’re feeling uncomfortable or have any questions.

Thankfully, at Time Warp Tattoos, everyone was more than accommodating, welcoming, and open to questions/concerns.

Also, it’s valuable to keep in mind the meaning/reasoning behind your tattoo and what it means to you. It doesn’t have to make sense to others if it makes sense to you, but it’s important to give your tattoo plans deep and thorough thought. Or, if you’re a rascal whose middle name is Spontaneity, you may like the gumball machine that’s at the front of the Time Warp Tattoo shop, where you get a tiny tattoo design instead of a gumball. Take a chance and see what you get!

Tattoo Care After Your Appointment

Caring for yourself and incorporating tattoo care after your appointment is vital to your tattoo experience. You want to make sure that you’re taking proper tattoo care after your appointment is finished so you can preserve that dope piece of art!

Below, I’ll cover the baseline tattoo care after the needles at rest, brought to you by WikiHow. Your tattoo artist will provide you with tattoo care after guidance, but it’s good to also know these steps/tips ahead of time.

Important Tips for Tattoo care after your appointment:

• Your tattoo artist will apply a bandage after your tattoo is finished, and you’re ready to go. It’s essential that you leave this bandage on for the duration that they assign. Typically, it’s for a few hours or overnight.
  • After the duration of time has passed that your tattoo artist had given you, you may take the bandage off, wash your hands with anti-bacterial (no scent) soap and gently wash your tattoo with that same soap. Be very gentle because your tattoo is healing and is most likely tender.
  • When drying your tattoo after these gentle washes, pat dry; don’t rub!
  • Apply a very thin layer of either anti-bacterial ointment or petroleum jelly to the tattoo to help with the healing process.
• Continue the above directions of washing, pat drying, and ointment routine twice a day for at least three weeks to ensure you’re taking the best measures for your tattoo care after your appointment.
• DO NOT submerge your tattoo in water until it is fully healed (showers are okay; be gentle with washing; skip the baths, pools, and hot tubs).
• Your tattoo will naturally scab and flake; this is a part of the healing process; avoid scratching your tattoo.
• If you notice the area around your tattoo feels hot, appears red, or any other abnormal signs immediately visit your doctor for further care.

This may seem like a lot, but it’s an easy process to get in the swing of, and your tattoo artist will walk you through everything about your tattoo care after your appointment. Please remember that it’s more than okay to ask questions and to speak up if you’re feeling uncomfortable.

My husband and I are super duper pleased with how our tattoos from Time Warp Tattoo turned out, and even months later, our tats look fantastic! We know that if we get an itch for a groovy tattoo experience, we’ll rock our way down Main Street East to Time Warp Tattoo.

Out of the tattoo shops in Ashland and the tattoo shops in Wisconsin, I can’t recommend Time Warp Tattoo enough for its welcoming atmosphere, great tattoos, and delicious coffee bar experience.
