I had the pleasure of talking with Erin M. Engstrom, one of the proud owners of Minnesota Whitewater Rafting along with her husband, Colin Engstorm, about the origins and fun of Minnesota Whitewater Rafting. Folks, you’re in for a real treat — there are stories, lessons, and more in store with this Q&A!

Erin has had a wide range of adventure experiences from being a member of the Air National Guard to working in the medical field, to making Minnesota Whitewater Rafting the awesome experience it is. We’ll also be hearing from other staff members about their experiences with Minnesota Whitewater Rafting; there’s a lot of adventure to come.

Whitewater Rafting is an incredible sport and adventure to partake in; how did it become a family interest and blossom into Minnesota Whitewater Rafting?

[Erin] Our goal as husband and wife was to find something we could work at together. We started as a team working at Air Shows and wanted to expand on that teamwork we had there.

Colin was a Boy Scout leader for several years and has shared his love of the outdoors with me. We purchased a well-established and well-reputed business from our extended family to keep the tradition going.

[MWR Staff]The entire experience working at MWR feels like family. We all have very different backgrounds and working as a team on the river brings everyone together.

They say that water holds memory, and I’m sure we can’t even fathom how many memories the St. Louis River is holding thanks to your incredible adventures! Does a particular memory come to mind when you think of one of your favorite experiences with Minnesota Whitewater Rafting?

[Erin] Watching someone’s first-time experience is fantastic. They are often nervous or even scared at the start of the trip; they usually come back beaming and laughing, ready to go again. 

[MWR Staff] Watching families enjoy their vacation time together. They play-fight to be the first into or out of the raft, they have splashing fights together. They go home with great memories.

Are there any misconceptions about whitewater rafting that you’d like to shed some light on?

[MWR Staff] People often think that it isn’t something that they can do. Then they do it and love it.

It’s a totally great time for those without any experience!

[Erin] Years ago I fell in love with kayaking, but I have always done the more “lazy river” kayaking. My first time rafting was like seeing the river for the first time. I fell in love all over again!

From the experiences that Minnesota Whitewater Rafting offers, which would you recommend for someone who isn’t experienced and someone who has participated in whitewater rafting before?

[Erin] The river is always changing; it’s high and fast in the spring and lower in the late summer/early fall. People should be aware of that when they are booking their trips…the ride is much more tame in the fall.

[MWR Staff] People think that the lower water means that there is less “whitewater”; this is not always the case as the lower water creates different features as the rocks are revealed. This can be a challenging ride as well, and there is a lot more splashing.

Although we may be biased here at On Lake Superior, we love an adventure that takes us near its grand waters. Are there any water adventure recommendations you’d give for a Lake Superior traveler?

[Erin] Kayak to the sea caves! Or if you just want to watch something fun…Sailing club goes out every Wednesday evening in the summer; always fun to watch.

Here’s a fun question for you: Does the crew have a pump-up song or routine to get them amped up for a new adventure?

[Erin] We do not…everyone always shows up excited to play at work. No one ever really needs any pumping up.

What’s one of your favorite things about being an expert guide with Minnesota Whitewater Rafting?

[Erin] The joy that families and friends have together; watching everyone gather around laughing over their photos is incredible.

[MWR Staff] Seeing people screaming in fear and then immediately start laughing is the best.

With every tattoo shop I’ve been to, there’s an undertone vibe, a culture if you will. What would you say is the culture of Voyageur Tattoo Co?

The culture here is a friendly, fun, curious and adventurous feel. We curate the items and artwork in the shop with certain colors and feelings in mind.

We try to keep lights low and colors inviting and calming for the clients who are generally a little nervous to begin with.

The easier we can make that experience for them, the better.

Voyageur Tattoo Co. has an adventurous, wanderlust-like feel. It’s attention-grabbing and makes me want to book an appointment ASAP! How did the shop’s name and aesthetic come about?

Voyageur is named after Minnesota’s only National park. Charlie was born and lived near the park and spend many summers swimming the lakes, picking blueberries on the islands, fishing and canoeing its waters, and spending lots of time with her family in the unabashed wilderness. They even owned a cabin within the park that’s still there, but was eventually absorbed back into the park.

National parks are very important to us both and we spend a lot of our time in them. We tried to bring a part of that into the studio with us, with Taxidermy and paintings of some of our favorite spots.

Natural light streams in through the skylights and makes it feel like you might be under the canopy of a conifer forest.

Are there any tattooing or tattoo shop misconceptions that you’d like to debunk, or perhaps tattoo shop etiquette that you’d like to address?

We’re not scary, we promise.

Even though our hands and necks are tattooed, we’re very gentle, friendly souls that love making art.

As far as etiquette goes, arrive on time, be clean, not smelly, and please be respectful of our art and our time. Being nice goes a long way, and please tip your artist if you can.

What’s in store for Voyageur Tattoo Co.’s future? Are there any events or news you’d like to share?

We’re very comfortable where we’re at and have no plans on moving or changing anything major.

We’re always adding art, making improvements here and there, but nothing major coming down the pipe.

We love our neighborhood and our lovely cafe that’s downstairs.

Q&A With Kyle James at Voyageur Tattoo

It’s incredibly valuable to have people in our lives who believe in us and our talents; as someone who had an enriching relationship with their art teacher in school, is there something that they told you that still rings in your ears today?

The most important thing I learned from my art teacher is the value of hard work and dedication to a project, not being afraid to fail at something new and exploring new and weird ways to create art that aren’t conventional.

The American Traditional style is iconic, to say the least; what drew you to this style in particular, and why is it your main focus?

American traditional has that bold, clean style the same way bold design draws your eye. I studied graphic design in college and the simplicity of the best designs is reflected in this style of tattooing. Taking away as many elements as possible while still conveying what it needs to.

As an artist transcending beyond the ‘typical’ canvas, you also enjoy woodworking and blacksmithing! Do you notice any techniques or mind frames that are in common amongst tattooing, woodworking, and blacksmithing?

All of my hobbies outside of tattooing are rooted in old ways.

New techniques might be more efficient, faster, but they’re not always better. The experience of hand planing a slab of cedar, or cutting dovetails into a perfectly straight edge is quiet, you can hear the fibers of the wood being cut or peeled away as you work.

This is a very reflective and spiritual feeling for me, and when I get to work on beautiful art on some amazing friends and clients I get that same peaceful feeling.

When asked about your most rewarding or challenging tattooing experience, is there a specific tattoo that comes to mind?

Large scale work is always a challenge, between designing the elements, laying them out, figuring out the shape of the body part to match and then executing all of those elements on an actual human body is extremely difficult and rewarding at the same time.

Anything worth doing has an element of difficulty.

Q&A With Charlie James at Voyageur Tattoo

I noticed that painting is mentioned in your ‘About Us’ section on the Voyageur Tattoo Co. website, are there other artistic mediums that you enjoy! Do you find that elements and skills of each one bleed into the others?

I have enjoyed drawing and painting, typically acrylic painting, since I was a child. I’ve also always enjoyed writing and over the years have dabbled in jewelry making.

As life has changed, I find myself doing more art with my daughter, like coloring, kids project/art kits and some collage work like when we made our 2024 “Dream boards” for New Years.

It has been fun to get back into some of those versions of art that I probably wouldn’t have done again if not for having a kid in the home. It’s a good reminder to enjoy my art and that art doesn’t have to be sellable or “advanced” to be meaningful in my life.

What is something from your apprenticeship that you’re grateful you learned, and what would you have told yourself before diving in?

That simple doesn’t mean easy. I use to over-design or add too many elements to my art, whether that was tattoo designs or other art mediums.

I thought by adding more textures or details, it meant it was better. While learning to refine my tattoo designs, I came to understand that there is a lot more skill in knowing how to portray the subject matter in a way that is clear, readable and will age better on the skin.

Something I would tell anybody before diving into a career in tattooing, is that it is a lot more than being a good artist.

Interpersonal skills, being self-driven/motivated and organized are just as important in being successful. You also have to put your ego aside. There’s a lot to learn from those around you and always ways to improve your craft.

Is there a tattooing style that you’re interested in honing in on in the future?

I’m approaching my 4th year of tattooing and have found myself being most excited about American Traditional. There’s something about the timelessness of the designs and how well they hold up over time if done well. When drawing designs or painting, I find myself most inspired by nature. Floral, animals and other plants are what I tend to draw the most.

What has been one of your most memorable tattooing experiences?

I have had the opportunity to tattoo many cool subject matters or check off many of those classic trad designs but the times that stick out as the most memorable are the connections I have made with the clients.

I had a client that use to be a social worker and was currently a foster parent, like myself and the conversations we would dive into came at a time that I needed that. They were deep, personal and
more like a therapy session for the both of us.

That’s not the only time someone I have just met at the beginning of a session has become a friend or someone where we talk like we’ve known each other for a long time.

Kyle and I have stayed at client-that-have-becomes-friends’ cabins and have made many great memories over the years outside of tattooing with all sorts of folks we wouldn’t have met otherwise.

Meet Kyle | A Lifelong Love for Art
Hi, I’m Kyle James, a tattoo artist in Duluth, Minnesota. From a young age, I was encouraged to draw—so much so that I was scribbling on paper before I could even walk or talk. Art was a constant presence in my life, with family and friends always gifting me art sets and kits for birthdays and holidays. It just became a natural part of who I am.

In high school, I was fortunate enough to have an art teacher who really believed in me. Kyle Clemons, my teacher, went above and beyond to ensure my success as an artist. He even dedicated his entire art budget to get me the supplies I needed. Honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without his support. My mom is also incredibly artistic—she’s amazing at drawing and painting. Sometimes, I think she’s even better than me!

Meet Charlie
My fiancée, Charlie, is not only my life partner but also my apprentice at Benchmark Tattoo. When we first considered working together, we knew we could handle being in the shop together, but there was a question of whether we could make it work with me as her boss and mentor. It’s a different dynamic, and we had to learn a lot about communication.

Through the apprenticeship, we’ve grown as both partners and colleagues. Not only do we work together at the shop, but we’ve also tackled numerous projects around our home, like remodeling. We have a great working relationship, and honestly, we’re together pretty much 24/7—and we love it. We don’t get tired of each other at all.

Our love story actually started on Tinder. I wasn’t actively using the app, but my sister convinced me to check it out one day. Charlie was the first person who came up, and my sister pointed him out, saying, “Charlie, look at this guy and his cute dog—he’s perfect for you!” As it turns out, he swiped up—my super like.

Our first date? A bit of a disaster. But even after all the mishaps, we both walked away liking each other, and the rest is history.

Meet the Animals
Our home wouldn’t be complete without our furry (and feathery) companions. We have three dogs—two Springer Spaniels and a Cocker Spaniel-Poodle mix. The smallest one might not look tough, but don’t let that fool you—she can be pretty mean!

We also have around 20 chickens outside, along with another 20 to 25 chicks upstairs in the brooder. When we bought this place, it just felt right to expand our little farm. With a bit of acreage, it made sense to bring in some animals. We started with goats, including Stella, an older goat I bought back in high school. She came from my parents’ house and has been with me for years.

Hobbies Beyond Tattooing
While tattooing is my passion, I have a few other hobbies that keep me busy. Woodworking is a close second, and I’m also really into blacksmithing. My workshop is filled with more reclaimed steel than I know what to do with—people are always giving me their scrap metal. And honestly, I’m not complaining; it keeps me inspired and ready for my next project.

What Should I Do for Tattoo Aftercare?

Being properly informed about Tattoo Aftercare is vital for both the longevity of your tattoo and your safety.

It’s also stated that paper instructions will be provided at the appointment, and if there is a medical concern during your healing process getting in touch with your Doctor is recommended. But, if you have any questions regarding the tattoo in a non-medical manner, calling your tattoo artist is encouraged.

1. Remove bandage after a minimum of 2-4 hours. Bandage can be left on overnight if the tattoo was done later in the day.
2. Gently wash your new tattoo with warm to hot water and non-scented antibacterial soap, then rinse with cool water.
3. Pat dry with a clean paper towel and let air dry.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for the first two-three days. Day three proceed to steps 5 & 6.
5. Place a small amount of ointment (I recommend Hustle Butter or Organic Coconut Oil) in your fingertips and gently work the ointment into the tattoo. note: please ONLY use approved aftercare
6. Please continue steps for approximately 2 weeks, washing twice a day and applying aftercare ointment 2-3 times a day.

The Haunted Ship Debacle

The problem was that I first visited in October, a season that historically was so low in visits that the owners of the museum thought to pair with the drama department at the University of Minnesota Duluth to transform the Irvin into the now infamous Duluth Haunted Ship. Despite this, I thought that I could still get a good experience of what it was like inside a bulk freighter. My thought was that if I didn’t go now, I’d have to wait the duration of winter until the museum opened back up. With the help of my girlfriend, we braved the long line that was frequently terrorized by menacing figures wielding tasers, knives, and the like. When we finally stepped inside the dark confines of the Irvin, everything seemed to happen all in one dizzying blur.

What I can say is this: in my life, I’ve been to a number of haunted houses, but the Duluth Haunted Ship is by far the scariest due entirely to the disturbingly good efforts of the talent and crew at the University of Minnesota Duluth. It was through their nightmarish environs that my priorities shifted from sightseeing to survival.

Visit Two

The Engine Room

I had to wait until spring for the museum to reopen, when the ice had thawed and my nerves were no longer wracked. Boarding the Irvin the second time around, we came into the engine room but might as well have stepping inside a computer with its advanced circuitboard of interconnected yet entangled mass of lines, levers, and switches. The tour guide only went on to extend the metaphor as he spoke at length about how the engine room had been prone to overheating, often baking the room at a sweltering 120 degrees.

The Aftcabins

Arguably my favorite thing about touring the Irvin was that visitors had the option to take the tour at their own pace. I know that when my girlfriend and I came across the cabins of the unlicensed, “non-officer” members of the crew, we very much wanted to take in what had appeared to be a rather spartan existence resembling an uninhabited college dorm awash in the retro mint green of a 1950s kitchen. Though it appeared as frigid as the interior of a walk-in freezer, we later learned that due to its novelty of including private bathrooms, many sailors would have considered themselves lucky at the time.

The Main Deck

Eventually, the tour brought us outside onto the main deck, where row upon row of covered cargo holds extended out before us like yard lines on a football field. After a brisk walk to midship, I spoke with a young man who knew not only the Irvin’s extensive history, but that of much of the regions. Had I been traveling alone, I would have surely have talked his ear off.

An aside about a recurring thought: it might just be that most of my furniture has always been the cheap, self-assembled sort, but one of the things that I kept remarking upon was just how solid everything felt; every footfall or knock on the wall was met by rigid steel. Is this what people mean when they refer to something as being “industrial strength?”

The Forecabins

All this to say: that comfort had not been felt until entering into the fore (front) cabins. Right away, it felt as though being transported to another world, one that seemed reminiscent of James Cameron’s Titanic. Indeed, we had gone from a third class ticket to the walnut-paneled, carpeted first. In speaking with a tour guide, she informed us that the Irvin had been built with the explicit intention of being the flagship of the fleet, meaning that it was always meant to impress, whether that was the occasional voyage of the company’s president or one of his many well-connected guests. I know that I was certainly impressed.

The Pilothouse

The highlight of the tour—before you are led into the gift shop and made to amble around and paw through the vast assortment of lakeboat-themed memorabilia—is the pilothouse, where all things navigation occur. At first, it all seemed very casual; there was an older tour guide stationed off to the side who, admittedly, I paid little attention to as I was too busy checking out all the shiny brass apparatuses. It was while I was peering into the vessel’s gyroscope that the tour guide finally broke his silence, where I would soon learn that he had spent much of his life sailing vessels very much like the Irvin. Happy to hear more, the tour guide seemed to indulge my questions ranging from technical to the merely curious, such as the vague question of what it was like to be sailing “out there” during a storm. It was scary at times, the old sailor said, going on to explain that the pilothouse, high as it was, often would tick like a metronome whenever the seas turned rough.

One thing you quickly learn when diving into this world is that there’s a lot of interest from everyday people who simply want to know more about something that seems entirely foreign to their own lives. Perhaps nothing has fostered this curiosity more than the mystery behind the sinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald in 1975, taking its entire crew into the frozen depths of Lake Superior. It was no surprise then when another person in our loosely-formed group asked the inevitable: where were you when the Fitzgerald went under?

Conclusion

I left that day entirely elated, walking back to my car with a little replica Irvin that my girlfriend had purchased for me. But, as I sit here writing, what really still resides with me is what the tour guide said in reply to the visitor’s question of where he had been when he had heard about the Fitzgerald. He seemed to look inward when he explained that it had been an otherwise ordinary night, that he had been watching Monday Night Football at the time. “I couldn’t believe it at first,” the old sailor said with a withdrawn tone. “Nobody could.”

Sampling the Love Creamery Flavors

My first experience at Love Creamery was with my sister, Laura and will always be a treasured memory. First of all, because I don’t think any of us get nearly enough sibling time together as adults, and secondly because Love Creamery has opened my mind about exploring new flavors and ingredients that I may have a preconceived notion about.

There’s definitely something so special about sharing childhood memories with the ones who was there with us through it all. The experience instantly transported us both back to the excitement of peering over the counter at the vast array of tempting treats and exploring all of the delightful flavors together. We decided to go with the Flight, which allowed us to each choose 3 flavors, for a total of 6 flavors to share. 

After a good amount of deliberation and samples, we decided on dark chocolate, milk chocolate, salted caramel, honey lavender, buttermilk vanilla and Nutella. Oh, my goodness, we were not disappointed with a single flavor choice!

The milk chocolate was so smooth and creamy with just the right amount of chocolate flavor. The dark chocolate was definitely made for the hard-core chocolate lover as it contains 100% organic dark chocolate. Wow!

The salted caramel was the perfect combination of sweet and salty, containing raw cane sugar and sprinkled with French grey sea salt. It’s easy to see why this one is a fan favorite!

The honey lavender…oh my. This is the ice cream flavor that really got me thinking. I am not a huge fan of lavender. I’ve tried it in different cookies, teas and coffee drinks and I could honestly never understand all the rage over lavender. Until now, their use of lavender in combination with the wildflower honey transported me into a magical ice cream heaven. It was truly a treat for my taste buds and has opened my mind to trying new flavors and new flavor combinations. 

The buttermilk vanilla was a tribute to how a simple flavor can be absolute perfection. Love Creamery uses organic Madagascar vanilla and Tahitian vanilla beans to bring out the most incredible vanilla flavor. And of course, the Nutella, which is smooth, silky and rippled with Nutella giving it an explosive chocolate hazelnut flavor.

We enjoyed every last bit of our ice cream. What a wonderful ambience to sit and chit chat about life and all of the incredible flavors we were tasting. We seemed to melt right into our cozy surroundings as we laughed, reminisced and fought playfully over the last bite of our very favorite flavors. I highly recommend Love Creamery for a lady’s day out, date night, or a place to reconnect with your children. The atmosphere is light, whimsical and very inviting.

The Duluth Lakewalk route goes from Bayfront Park to Brighton Beach (Kitchi Gammi Park). The Duluth Lakewalk started out as just a half-mile path in 1986, before becoming the fantastic path it is today, due in large part to efforts of the non-profit organization Friends of the Duluth Lakewalk which is dedicated to preserving, protecting and improving the Duluth Lakewalk.

Where to Park at the Duluth Lakewalk Trail

There are several different options on parking for the Duluth Lakewalk trail. I’ll give you a couple solid choices, including my favorite spot to park when using the Duluth Lakewalk trail.

Parking at the lot near Beacon Pointe rentals

Oddesey Resorts operates Beacon Pointe on Lake Superior, which looks to be a fairly unique place to stay right near Duluth if you’re in the market for a condo-style hotel. I’ve not stayed there previously, so my favorite part of that little slice of Duluth is the free city parking lot where we can start my favorite route along the Duluth Lakewalk.

I park in the free lot by Beacon Pointe and get my feet moving toward Canal Park. It’s just about a 2.5 mile walk, taking between 45-60 minutes depending on your walking pace. The only downside to any day on the Duluth Lakewalk is that the weather can change dramatically at any moment. Hey, it’s Lake Superior and if you know, you know (to always wear layers ).

Parking at Canal Park in Duluth

Parking at Canal Park is a popular option since there are plenty of things to do right near your parking spot. When I’m there, I like to park in the lot adjacent to Canal Park Brewery. You can then do the reverse of the map you see at the top of the article, head out then head back to Canal Park.

What you’ll see on this route

What I really love about this route is the sights you’ll see along the way. The Friends of the Duluth Lakewalk have done an incredible job working with the city to create a fantastic walking/running/biking path for us all to enjoy.

Pollinator Gardens

Along the Duluth Lakewalk, there are 8 different pollinator gardens. These beautiful and naturally functional flower gardens have been managed in partnership with Duluth Monarch Buddies and the Arrowhead Chapter of Wild Ones native plant organization since 2018. Leif Erikson Park

A beautiful open space with a unique stage structure, Leif Erikson park is an interesting location along the Duluth Lakewalk. This space was originally called both Cullum Park and Lake Shore Park before being renamed Leif Erikson Park in 1927. In that year Bert Enger purchased the replica vessel Leif Erikson, which had just sailed all the way from Bernan, Norway to Duluth, MN. Enger purchased the ship and donated it to the city on the condition it be placed in the park and the park renamed in its honor. At this time, the replica Leif Erikson ship sits in storage awaiting a permanent structure to be built at the park to house the delicate relic.

The Duluth Rose Garden

The rose garden is 4.5 acres that’s included in Leif Erikson park. The garden has more than 3,000 rose bushes and other plants. There is a gazebo where many weddings have taken place, along with a Leif Erikson statue and a beautiful fountain. There are also restrooms there which are open seasonally.

Fitgers (shopping & restaurants)

Nestled along the scenic shores of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, the historic Fitger’s complex offers an enchanting mix of old-world charm and contemporary comfort. The building, originally constructed in 1885, once housed the thriving Fitger’s Brewery. It began its storied life as the Lake Superior Brewery in 1857, a testament to Duluth’s rich brewing heritage. Under the guidance of August Fitger, a brewmaster from Germany, the brewery flourished and was even able to navigate through Prohibition by pivoting to produce sodas and sweets.

In a loving nod to its roots, the old brewery was thoughtfully transformed in the mid-1980s into a charming boutique hotel and a bustling shopping and dining hub. We definitely recommend a stop at the Fitgers complex if you haven’t been there before.

Shopping at Fitger’s is an experience in itself. The complex’s corridors, lined with vintage photographs and brewery memorabilia, lead visitors through a variety of local boutiques and specialty stores. From handcrafted goods and fine art to outdoor apparel and wellness products, the array of shopping options caters to all tastes and needs.

In a majestic little building originally built in the 1920s as a gas station for the Northwestern Oil Company, the Portland Malt Shoppe is a true gem along the Duluth Lakewalk. The shop sells malts, floats, and ice cream of all sorts and is typically open between May 1st and September 30th.

The story of Va Bene begins in 2006 with its founders, Mary Kay and Jim Berarducci, who were inspired by their Italian heritage to create a space where high-quality ingredients and home-style cooking met the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere of Duluth. The name “Va Bene”, meaning “it goes well” in Italian, reflects a promise to each guest who walks through their doors. And based on my trips to the restaurant, that’s a promise consistently fulfilled.

The restaurant continues to excel since the ownership transition in 2019 (as reported by the Duluth News Tribune) under the passionate management of two dedicated long-time managers, Luke Schmitz and Patrick Moore, who continue to uphold the founding mission of culinary brilliance. Holidays continue to be popular at Va Bene as well, as evidenced on Valentine’s Day 2024 when they had a waiting list with over 75 people waiting in case anyone called to cancel.

I hope you enjoy reading these Q&As with Jordan Sundberg as much as I enjoyed corresponding with her and becoming inspired myself. Buckle those artist seatbelts; it’s going to be an inspiring ride!

Living next to beautiful scenery like Lake Superior must be delightful; do you find inspiration from the lake and other natural beauties around you?

I’m pretty sure every day is inspired by the lake and other nature around us. Duluth is so lucky to be surrounded by and saturated with creeks, cliffs, trails, skiing, and high hills. I learned as a child that nature is such a hospitable place. There’s a kindness and welcome in nature, not to mention the overwhelming beauty and power. If I take the time to not only exercise in it or take in a quick view of the lake, but actually become quiet and present in nature, so many ideas come. Slowing down is essential.

Can you recall one of the first times you felt a connection with your artwork and pulled into a calling for it?

I have always loved making things–food, gifts, bouquets, forts, radio shows. If I look back on my childhood, some of my most alive, in-sync moments are making things with my two hands for others to enjoy. I am still surprised people pay me for things I make because it feels so natural to me and not like work! There was a point in middle school, though, where I remember doing projects in art class and just being flooded with excitement and energy to do far more than expected. My teacher noticed, too, and would give me art supplies on the side and encourage me extravagantly. There was a recognition that I had some gifting in me for art and knew I could make art happily forever.

What was it like to collaborate on the book “Fables of the North Shore” with Natalie Salminen Rude? Could you tell us about the book itself?

A gift! Best described as two friends playing! We got to experience the joy of openhearted collaboration where creativity builds upon itself in magical ways. We both had the perspective that anything could be possible and went along following the happy trail of ideas that came from that!

Are there any exciting ventures for you and your art in the future that you’d like to share?

I have been working towards picture book writing and illustration! I am very, very excited to hopefully make books one day, as I believe picture books are some of one of the most important, meaningful, powerful art forms out there. Children are smarter than we often think. Making books that respond to their genius wonder and experience in the world would be a dream come true.

The beauty of being on Lake Superior is hard to capture because it’s not only a visual aesthetic but a feeling that fills you up when you’re in its presence. And I dare say that Jordan Sundberg has bottled up that spark effortlessly in her magnificent pieces.
