Where Can You Visit The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park?

The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, the largest Michigan State Park, is closest to the town of Ontonagon, Michigan.

A Michigan Recreational Passport or Entrance Fee will be required upon arrival to the State Park, and it’s important to double-check the Porkies State Park website to see if there have been any closures or updates to park amenities that may affect your travel plans.

How much does it cost to go to the Porcupine Mountains?

To visit the beauty of the Porcupine Mountains on Lake Superior you’ll need to either purchase/have a Michigan Recreational Passport or pay for a One Day pass. Both options can be purchased at the State Park, and the option prices vary depending on if you’re a Michigan resident or not.

Rest assured that your money is being used for a variety of wonderful projects and upkeep when you purchase a Park Pass from the Michigan State Park system.

• Keeping the forest campgrounds, hiking trails, recreation areas, and boat launches in the best condition for optimal enjoyment for outdoor lovers such as yourself
• Upkeep for outdoor facilities and Historic sites that are in the State Park
• 10% of the funds that come from Park Passes are granted to the cause of local park improvements and future park projects

Let’s take a peek at the Park Pass fees! For Michigan residents, vehicle passes can be purchased at the time of license plate registration or a Commercial Daily Pass may be obtained at the Park site. Exemptions for the State Park fee include visitors who enter on foot or by bicycle, School buses and public transit buses, and snowmobiles.

The Wonder of Lake of the Clouds

One of the most enjoyed pieces of this sensational State Park puzzle for visitors near and far is the breathtaking view of Lake of the Clouds. A vision of inspiration and beauty, visitors can look through telescopes or simply take in the view of its vast forest and peaceful lake view.

With accessible viewing areas and access to the viewpoint for Day Pass visitors, you’re bound to have a peaceful moment with this spectacular view. And while you’re looking out, you can bring up this interesting fact/story.

According to local history, a B-17 crashed just South of the Lake of the Clouds in 1944 due to an engine fire. With a sigh of relief, the people on the aircraft jumped and safely landed before the crash. In the town of Silver City, where the survivors walked to after safely landing, there is an eminence of this unique story in the form of the original B-17 plane propeller.

Legend has it that there are fragments of the plane lurking in the deep forest of the Porkies. What makes a State Park ascend to the next level of awesomeness? An entangled woodland legend! Hikers and visitors are not encouraged to go looking for these supposed dislocated pieces of the B-17, instead let it fill you with happy camper glee that it may just be real!

A Chat With Porcupine Mountains Visitor

A set of adventures the Porcupine Mountains have seen come through time and time again, and who I happen to know well, are my in-laws!

My wonderful Mother-in-Law, Jeanne, took the time to talk with me and answer a few questions about their experience in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, the beauty of the Lake of the Clouds, and the joy of being on Lake Superior.

If you’re a curious explorer who’s itching to put this Michigan State Park on your bucket list, reading this Q&A can be a great jumping-off point to launching into your research and planning.

The Porcupine Mountains are notorious for their beauty and solitariness; what brings you and your Husband back again and again for more adventures in that vast wilderness?

It’s like going to visit an old friend, comfortable, familiar, and welcoming but always learning and seeing something new making new memories. The clear waters and undeveloped landscapes are good for the soul.

I’ve heard you mention before that being near or on Lake Superior is your happy place, why is that?

Looking at that beautiful water reminds me how small we really are compared to the vastness of nature. My problems seem smaller too.

When you think about your time in that incredible mountain range, is there a memory that stands out to you?

I love hiking the Escarpment trail. It runs along the ridge of The Lake of the Clouds. The views are spectacular.

I also really love the hike that runs along the Little Carp River. If you can handle the mosquitos, the sounds and sites of the river flowing to the lake are amazing.

If you were to give some advice to an adventurous hiker or a happy camper who is curious about checking out the Porkies, what would you tell them?

Ok, time to get serious.

Do your research, understand the adventure you are taking and know your limits.

Remember if you’re hiking an in and back trail, the back is always tougher than the in.

Safety first. Take plenty of water, snacks, basic first aid supplies, and proper clothing.

The Duluth Lakewalk route goes from Bayfront Park to Brighton Beach (Kitchi Gammi Park). The Duluth Lakewalk started out as just a half-mile path in 1986, before becoming the fantastic path it is today, due in large part to efforts of the non-profit organization Friends of the Duluth Lakewalk which is dedicated to preserving, protecting and improving the Duluth Lakewalk.

Where to Park at the Duluth Lakewalk Trail

There are several different options on parking for the Duluth Lakewalk trail. I’ll give you a couple solid choices, including my favorite spot to park when using the Duluth Lakewalk trail.

Parking at the lot near Beacon Pointe rentals

Oddesey Resorts operates Beacon Pointe on Lake Superior, which looks to be a fairly unique place to stay right near Duluth if you’re in the market for a condo-style hotel. I’ve not stayed there previously, so my favorite part of that little slice of Duluth is the free city parking lot where we can start my favorite route along the Duluth Lakewalk.

I park in the free lot by Beacon Pointe and get my feet moving toward Canal Park. It’s just about a 2.5 mile walk, taking between 45-60 minutes depending on your walking pace. The only downside to any day on the Duluth Lakewalk is that the weather can change dramatically at any moment. Hey, it’s Lake Superior and if you know, you know (to always wear layers ).

Parking at Canal Park in Duluth

Parking at Canal Park is a popular option since there are plenty of things to do right near your parking spot. When I’m there, I like to park in the lot adjacent to Canal Park Brewery. You can then do the reverse of the map you see at the top of the article, head out then head back to Canal Park.

What you’ll see on this route

What I really love about this route is the sights you’ll see along the way. The Friends of the Duluth Lakewalk have done an incredible job working with the city to create a fantastic walking/running/biking path for us all to enjoy.

Pollinator Gardens

Along the Duluth Lakewalk, there are 8 different pollinator gardens. These beautiful and naturally functional flower gardens have been managed in partnership with Duluth Monarch Buddies and the Arrowhead Chapter of Wild Ones native plant organization since 2018. Leif Erikson Park

A beautiful open space with a unique stage structure, Leif Erikson park is an interesting location along the Duluth Lakewalk. This space was originally called both Cullum Park and Lake Shore Park before being renamed Leif Erikson Park in 1927. In that year Bert Enger purchased the replica vessel Leif Erikson, which had just sailed all the way from Bernan, Norway to Duluth, MN. Enger purchased the ship and donated it to the city on the condition it be placed in the park and the park renamed in its honor. At this time, the replica Leif Erikson ship sits in storage awaiting a permanent structure to be built at the park to house the delicate relic.

The Duluth Rose Garden

The rose garden is 4.5 acres that’s included in Leif Erikson park. The garden has more than 3,000 rose bushes and other plants. There is a gazebo where many weddings have taken place, along with a Leif Erikson statue and a beautiful fountain. There are also restrooms there which are open seasonally.

Fitgers (shopping & restaurants)

Nestled along the scenic shores of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota, the historic Fitger’s complex offers an enchanting mix of old-world charm and contemporary comfort. The building, originally constructed in 1885, once housed the thriving Fitger’s Brewery. It began its storied life as the Lake Superior Brewery in 1857, a testament to Duluth’s rich brewing heritage. Under the guidance of August Fitger, a brewmaster from Germany, the brewery flourished and was even able to navigate through Prohibition by pivoting to produce sodas and sweets.

In a loving nod to its roots, the old brewery was thoughtfully transformed in the mid-1980s into a charming boutique hotel and a bustling shopping and dining hub. We definitely recommend a stop at the Fitgers complex if you haven’t been there before.

Shopping at Fitger’s is an experience in itself. The complex’s corridors, lined with vintage photographs and brewery memorabilia, lead visitors through a variety of local boutiques and specialty stores. From handcrafted goods and fine art to outdoor apparel and wellness products, the array of shopping options caters to all tastes and needs.

Culinary delights abound at Fitger’s, where dining options range from casual eateries to upscale bistros. The centerpiece, a brewpub located in the old brewery space, serves a selection of craft beers that honor its frothy past. Paired with a menu of modern American favorites, it’s a place where history meets the palate with delightful flair.

Portland Malt Shoppe (seasonal)

In a majestic little building originally built in the 1920s as a gas station for the Northwestern Oil Company, the Portland Malt Shoppe is a true gem along the Duluth Lakewalk. The shop sells malts, floats, and ice cream of all sorts and is typically open between May 1st and September 30th.

Canal Park

Canal Park in Duluth, Minnesota, stands as a vibrant testament to the city’s transformation from an industrial port to a lively cultural hub. This bustling lakeside district, once lined with warehouses and docking piers, now buzzes with energy from locals and visitors alike through all seasons.

It’s here, with the majestic Aerial Lift Bridge as its backdrop, that you can get a good feel for one portion of the spirit of Duluth. The iconic bridge, an engineering marvel, offers a gateway to the Great Lakes ships as they navigate the canal, a sight that never ceases to captivate.

The Duluth canal webcam points toward the Duluth Canal entrance, just beyond the iconic Duluth Aerial Lift Bridge, showing one end of the Duluth Lakewalk trail and also giving you a birds-eye view of ships entering the canal — always an awesome sight to behold.

Two years after her parents’ surprising and painful split, twelve-year-old Jo and her mom find themselves on the 100-mile hike on the Superior Hiking Trail along Lake Superior’s north shore –a journey that Jo had always looked forward to hiking with her dad. I had the wonderful opportunity to correspond with Erin Soderberg Downing and ask her a few questions about her experience on the Superior Hiking Trail with her son, her writing, and what she loves about being on Lake Superior.

OLS:
It’s interesting how we, as writers, can sprinkle a lot of ourselves in our works without noticing at times. You’ve mentioned in your guest article, “How Hiking 310 Miles Helped Build a Novel—and Taught Me a Few Things About Writing Along the Way” that during your writing process, you realized that your character and yourself both had a fear of being out on the trail for a few nights on your own. Were there any other characteristics/quirks that you discovered that you slipped into the characters and story from you or your son?

Erin Soderberg:
The main character in this novel, Jo, is absolutely a combination of me and Henry. I took the best parts of both of us, and smushed them into one 12-year-old girl. I love the way Jo uses humor during hard times to help her get through – that’s a quality I try to employ in my own life, so I wanted to be sure that was something I focused on with this character. She also has a lot of self-doubts at the beginning of the story, which is also something I’ve dealt with in my own life (haven’t we all??). I totally use real people to inspire my characters, since I think that really helps to make them feel more relatable to readers.

OLS:
When hiking on the Superior Hiking Trail, did you find Lake Superior inspiring when it was in view?

Erin Soderberg:
Henry and I had a rule that anytime we came to a beautiful overlook (especially of the big lake!) we would take out our little camp chairs and sit and read and enjoy the view for at least 20 minutes. Those moments of rest and recovery are what helped keep us going – and anytime we were having a particularly frustrating day, a glimpse of my beloved Lake Superior could always turn things around!

OLS:
What elements of the Superior Hiking Trail set it apart from other trails that you’ve ventured on?

Erin Soderberg:
I love that there are so many beautiful vistas – every day afforded different views, terrain, and experiences that kept the experience feeling fresh. In fact, there were so many beautiful views that Henry and I realized we’d started taking some of them for granted! That’s when we knew it was time for us to take a break from our distance hike, and come back when we could appreciate each moment of beauty more fully!

OLS:
Did you have an inner message of strength/positivity that you would give yourself during your expedition to encourage yourself to keep on going?

Erin Soderberg:
Henry and I traded off bad days during our hike, just like Jo and her mom do on their journey. We had to lean on each other to keep going, and when one of us was feeling down, the other would pick up the positivity-slack and keep the other moving along. We also promised ourselves at least one candy bar each day, which was a great motivator!

OLS:
When you think back on this remarkable trip, what’s one of the first memories that pop into your head?

Erin Soderberg:
The night we sat on the cliffs at the top of Section 13, and an eagle flew by right at eye level. It was so unbelievable, and with the sun setting and the sky painted magical colors, it was a truly restorative moment on our hike.

OLS:
If you could have given a message to your future self before you and your son started your expedition, what would you have said?

Erin Soderberg:
JUST KEEP WALKING! It’s worth it.

OLS:
“Just Keep Walking” is a brilliant way to capture such an impactful moment in your and your son’s life (and relationship!). Do you think your epic adventure will inspire another novel?

Erin Soderberg:
I don’t think I’ll write another trail adventure, but I do think this book helped me figure out that writing books set in the upper Midwest make me happiest as a writer. I love capturing that sense of place, and sharing the beauty of our area with people who have never visited the Great Lakes region!

Superior Hiking Trail Information

The Superior Hiking Trail is a gorgeous 310-mile adventure waiting to happen on Lake Superior. This hiking journey takes place in Minnesota, and the trail itself snakes through eight Minnesota State Parks! An average hike-through time is somewhere between two and four weeks, but you can take the Superior Hiking Trail section by section or go for a day hike.

I had heard of people being so moved by nature that they were brought to tears or had seen it through the lens of a coming-of-age movie, but I had never experienced it for myself until Siskiwit Falls. Standing in my hiking boots, holding my hiking poles in one hand while my other one was enveloped in my Husband’s, the trickling water in all of its peace and beauty moved me to overwhelmingly happy tears.

That’s not to say that I’d compare Siskiwit Falls to The Starry Night or Niagara Falls, but there’s a simplistic and intimate beauty that radiates off of Siskiwit Falls as you’re standing there in front of it, or you’re hiking along, and you can hear it splashing away. Whether you’re looking for fun hiking trails in Wisconsin, or you find yourself near Cornucopia, Wisconsin, and you’re looking for a little jaunt in nature, Siskiwit Falls is there.

If you’re searching for beginner-friendly Wisconsin hiking trails with waterfalls, this trail is a good one to tack onto that hiking bucket list!

Where is Siskiwit Falls?

Siskiwit Falls is just a few minute’s drive outside Cornucopia, home of the excellent Cornucopia Coffee and Sweet Shoppe, and a scenic 25-minute drive from Bayfield. Right off of the conveniently named Siskiwit Falls Road, you’ll be welcomed by a modest parking lot surrounded by lovely trees and the trailhead nearby. Siskiwit Falls Hiking Difficulty Level

In my opinion, this trail should be on the list for fun hiking trails in Wisconsin because it’s a low difficulty level, interactive, gorgeous, and picturesque.

Trail Length: Approximentally 0.3/0.8 miles (Depending on how much exploring you get up to)

With the trek being less than a mile, you can effortlessly be in the moment and use your mental energy to take in all of the natural beauty and spend less time in your head wondering if you brought enough water for the remainder of the trip or worrying about having to hike all the way back once you reach the turnaround point.

For this hike, we did use our hiking poles, but they weren’t necessary to use. I enjoy hiking with the hiking poles because it allows me to have some more balance and confidence on the trail. You also feel like quite the hiker when you’re trekking down the trail with hiking poles; give it a whirl!

There are points where you’re coming down/up a modest hill; there are also stairs and other chances to get closer to the water that requires some climbing. With all of that said, the Siskiwit Falls trail is very beginner-friendly, and I would say even kid-friendly, too, when accompanied by an adult.

So, is Siskiwit Falls a beginner-friendly and easy trail to embark on? You betcha! Take a casual hike through this trail after you swing by Cornucopia Coffee and Sweet Shoppe; that’s what we did!

What to Expect for Siskiwit Falls

It’s always nice to know what to expect before you hit up a new trail. There are still natural beauty surprises you can come across, and everyone preserves the nature around them differently, but it is ideal to know what you’re getting into with a new trail.

Upon embarking on this trail, you can expect to have an easy-going jaunt and a lovely intake of the trees, birds, fish, the Siskiwit River, and the dips and slides that the river has along the trail.

When the weather permits, a little trail birdy told me that people have brought tubes to go down the Siskiwit River’s natural drops and slides. When you can’t make the drive for the Wisconsin Dells, here’s your next best thing!

It is worth saying to be responsible and careful when doing anything out in nature, and of course, respectful of the natural life around you. And, of course, have fun and embrace it!

What I love about the Siskiwit Falls trail is how inviting and interactive it is with being able to get so close to the water. It’s almost playful, in a way, because when you’re able to be that up close to the river, you can’t help but want to feel how cold the water is or splash some water on the back of your neck and arms if it’s a scorcher.

When you want to go off trail a tad and get closer to the water, like in the photo below, it’s handy to have those dandy hiking poles to give you some extra balance and confidence as you’re side-stepping down. After the first few times hiking with hiking poles, you get pretty used to it, and it feels pretty weird hiking without them from that point on.

Like when you accidentally leave the house with your slippers on instead of your shoes! No?… Just me?… Well, let’s carry on.

But sometimes, it’s a nice breath of fresh air to step away from the planning board and just go out for a nice dawdle.

Embrace the Coffee Break in Cornucopia Wisconsin

Cornucopia Coffee and Sweet Shoppe, otherwise adorably known as Corny Coffee, is a darling caffeine experience when you’re coming around Cornucopia WI. With that sweet small-town feeling, like you’ve stepped inside a cozy-looking coffee shop you’d see in a Hallmark Original Movie, while still getting the quality of a ‘big town‘ cup of joe/tea, Corny Coffee is a great place to get your drink of choice while experiencing things to do on Lake Superior.

The inside of Corny Coffee is full of local artwork, dazzling decor and items for sale, and mix-matched chairs and tables, giving that classic, colorful, eclectic feel. When you cross the threshold of Corny Coffee, you’re embraced by a homeyness that’s perfectly captured by the welcoming atmosphere and the incredibly kind baristas running the caffeinated ship.

We ended up having the sweetest conversation with the two lovely baristas who were working while we visited Cornucopia WI! There was a painted rock on the counter by the cash register, and turning it over, we saw it was a painted rock from Wausau, Wisconsin, which isn’t far from our own stomping grounds. What a small world! The baristas were so kind in getting into a fun Wisconsin-fashioned conversation about the painted rocks, the different places we’ve all lived, and what we love about visiting/living on Lake Superior.

I guess it just goes to show that when you open yourself up to a little conversation, it can lead to a fun and memorable experience!

Take a Hike! | Siskiwit Falls

Tucked into the cozy town of Cornucopia WI is a hiking trail we embarked on by the inspiring name of Siskiwit Falls Trail. This trail is perfect for anyone who wants to experience a beautiful view without getting blisters on their heels.

Another element of a Quaint Adventure can be taking time out from the business of everyday life and taking a nice walk through the beauty of nature around you. Walking through the woods can be so therapeutic; a perfect way to clear your mind of clutter and allow affirmations of gratitude to filter in. It might sound a little hooky at first, but trust me, once you’re out there on the trail, you’ll be picking up what I’m putting down here.

Relax & Unwind | Cornucopia Beach

If bumming around on the beach sounds like the perfect quaint adventure to you, then you’re in luck! Cornucopia Wisconsin has a lovely beach with plenty of sandy room, a few pieces of playground equipment, a sailboat marina, and a large walkable pier to get an even further view of the stunning Lake Superior.

We visited Cornucopia WI, during the middle of October, which may not scream ‘beach day‘, but we actually had a lot of fun, and the weather was lovely! Plus, on a nice autumn day, you may find that you get the beach all to yourself, as was the case with us.

You might be curious about what one could do on a beach during the Fall, and that’s a fair question, as beaches are usually harbored for hot summer days. But there’s a surprising number of things to do on Lake Superior during the fall season!

You can experience all of the community fun and small-town likeness of Cornucopia Wisconsin during Cornucopia Day, which takes place every year on the second weekend of August!

You can make your way through the Flea Market, observe the town Parade and the ambitious 5k Race, and while you’re there, get yourself a tasty Midwestern treat like Fish on a Stick!

According to the Cornucopia Wisconsin website, all of the proceeds go to the South Shore Area Ambulance and the Cornucopia Fire Department. We love a good cause!

When one is exploring things to do near Lake Superior, you’re bound to come across a few Marinas! Walking through these Marianas can be a lovely time to gaze at the different sailboats, admire or laugh to yourself about the names of the boats, and in the case of Cornucopia WI’s Mariana, you can see some old-timey boats!

A few paces away from the Mariana, there are a few vintage boats on display. Where you can imagine what it was like to be a fisherman back in the day or what it would have been like to travel from far away into Cornucopia WI. There’s a lot of history to be learned and embraced by reading the plaques near the Mariana and by the pier.

How To Get To Big Bay State Park

I’ll show you the way to Big Bay! First things first, you’ll need to hitch a ride on the iconic Madeline Island Ferry Line in Bayfield. As someone who’s been on the Ferry multiple times, I can say that it’s a pleasant and picturesque experience.

The only suggestion I would make is to wear a sweater/coat if you’re traveling in the Fall/Spring (and, of course, Winter!) because it can get a bit chilly with the wind blowing off Lake Superior. But my goodness, it is a breathtaking sight to gaze out over the timeless whitecaps and out to the bustling and cozy city of Bayfield while you’re on your way to a grand Island adventure.

Madeline Island Ferry Line Rates

Here is a general overview of the Madeline Island Ferry Line rates as of Spring 2024 to give you an idea for your travel. There are more details to have in mind, so please take a moment to visit their website before making plans for your super fun adventure! Below are the rates for individual passengers, which do not include if you were to bring a vehicle/bike on board.

Big Bay State Park Address & Directions

As mentioned above, in order to get to Big Bay State Park, you’ll need to take a Ferry Ride (estimated to be around 25 minutes, depending on the season and weather conditions) to Madeline Island from Bayfield. I would suggest paying the extra fee to bring your car along since Big Bay State Park is about a 13-minute drive from the Ferry Line.

It’s also really handy to have your car if you’re camping on Madeline Island, so you have the freedom to drive into town and go out to eat or dawdle around. And if you are camping, don’t forget to pick the best camping pillow from our handy guide. Alas, if you’re staying at a hotel close to the Ferry, you could get away with a bike/bike rental if you’d like, and there are even moped rentals available!

According to Big Bay State Park’s website, their hours remain from 6 A.M. to 11 P.M. year-round, and for all state parks, you must have a State Parks sticker to enter. Once you’ve made your camping reservations or purchased your admission and you’ve entered the park, an oasis of miles of Lake Superior shore, big green hiking trails, a lovely mile-long boardwalk, and outstanding sandstone bluffs await your eager eyes.

According to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, Big Bay State Park is 2,350 acres, including a 1.5-mile boardwalk, a 1.5-mile beach, and 4 unique hiking trails. Along with activities like camping and having a good old-fashioned campfire, picnic areas for a peaceful lunch or group gathering, and an array of winter activities, you can also take a trip to the beach and experience a dip and a glide on Lake Superior in your boat, kayak, canoe, or swimming!

It should be noted that Big Bay State Park does not allow campfires or pets on its beach, and there is no boat launch available on the beach. They do have a beach wheelchair for those in need of assistance. And if you don’t feel like lugging your own Kayak along for the trip, no worries, you can rent a Kayak at the park.

Sometimes, the best parts of an adventure are the surprises we don’t see coming.

Joni’s Beach

“Great little free park perfect for kids. A little playground, nice sandy beach, and a sturdy pier to complete the picture. It can be somewhat loud and wet when the wind comes off the lake but that’ll keep the bugs away, too. There’s a parking lot for maybe a dozen cars, and street parking is also available. The park is in easy walking distance from anywhere in La Pointe.” – Dirk N

Apostle Islands Kayaks

“Worth every penny, and reasonably priced. The owner is a local who has been doing this tour for years, and kayaking many more before that. He is intentional in everything – from how he interacts with everyone, to the kayaking lessons he gives, to the planned stops along the tour, all the photos he takes along the way to help you remember your experience, and more. Stops on the tour include a beach and a swim, sea caves, and a place to cliff jump. Sometimes you pay for an experience and feel like you didn’t get your money worth – that’s not the case with this tour. It was an awesome experience that we’d do again in a heartbeat. Plus, kid friendly, and a limited number of participants on each tour means you get to know the people you’re with.
