Fisheries biologists have uncovered a remarkable fish story in Lake Superior: Mary Catherine, a lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush), is now believed to be the oldest lake trout ever recorded in the Great Lakes. Hatch year: 1961. Caught during a routine survey in September 2023 on Klondike Reef, a remote reef in Lake Superior, Mary Catherine was found to be 62 years old, twice the age expected for a lake trout under ordinary conditions.

In September 2023, fisheries crews working Klondike Reef in Lake Superior aged a lake trout, affectionately nicknamed “Mary Catherine”, at 62 years old, making her the oldest lake trout documented in the Great Lakes. She’s a humper-form lake trout, small-bodied but long-lived, and biologists confirmed her age by reading growth rings on otoliths (ear stones), the gold standard for old fish. Reports note she was hatched in 1961, which means this single trout lived through sea-lamprey decimation, fishery closures, and multi-decade restoration—then outlived most of her species several times over.

That longevity arrives alongside a broader rebound story: in Minnesota’s portion of Lake Superior, 98% of lake trout sampled in 2023 were wild, a striking indicator of self-sustaining populations after decades of lamprey control, habitat protection, and careful harvest management. Source: Minnesota DNR Files (PDF)

A Life Lived Across Keweenaw History

If Mary Catherine truly hatched in 1961, she “saw” plenty: C&H Mining still operating; a ~95% Great Lakes lake-trout collapse by 1964 from overfishing and lamprey; the 1986 EPA Superfund designations at Torch Lake and Quincy Smelter; the 1992 creation of Keweenaw National Historical Park; and the present-day recovery of native fish communities in Superior’s cold, clear water.

Counting Rings & Setting Records

Usually, lake trout in Lake Superior live around 25–30 years. The previous oldest known trout in Superior was about 42 years old, recorded in 1998. Mary Catherine weighs about 4.62 pounds (2.1 kilograms) and measures just under 25 inches (627 mm) long. A modest size, but astounding longevity.

She is of the “humper” subspecies, which are known for relatively slow growth and feeding predominantly on invertebrates—traits that may contribute to longer lives. Biologists estimated her age by counting growth rings on her otoliths (inner ear stones), where one ring forms each winter.

What’s at Stake: Why This Matters

That Mary Catherine survived through decades of environmental stress, threats from overfishing and sea lamprey, changing water quality, and variable climate implies something positive: the lake trout population in Lake Superior is in relatively strong shape. Her longevity is more than trivia, it’s a signal.

In fact, in 2024 state, provincial, tribal, and federal agencies declared that lake trout populations in Lake Superior are now “fully restored.”

Looking Back: Mary Catherine’s Lifetime in Context

Since 1961, when Mary Catherine hatched, a lot has happened locally around Lake Superior. Here are some selecting landmarks that span her life:

1961: C&H Mining Company (Calumet & Hecla) was still in operation.

1964: Lake trout populations across the Great Lakes dropped nearly 95% due to overfishing and invasive sea lamprey.

1986: The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) identified sites along Torch Lake and the Quincy Smelter as potential Superfund cleanup locations.

1992: The Keweenaw National Historical Park was established.

2024: Lake Superior’s lake trout population declared fully restored.

It’s rare that a single living fish has been a silent witness to so much regional history, including environmental battles, mining era legacies, conservation reforms, and evolving community relationships with the lake.

Second Oldest Fish & Other Notables

While Mary Catherine now holds the top spot among recorded ages for lake trout in the Great Lakes, there have been other impressive specimens and related stories:

The previous record for lake trout in Lake Superior was a 42-year-old fish, caught in 1998.

Another example (not lake trout) is the “bigmouth buffalo” species, found elsewhere in North America, known to live for over 100 years, setting records among long‐lived freshwater fish. Source: Wikipedia

These stories reinforce how long‐lived many native fish can be, under the right conditions of cold, clean water, limited pollution, and good habitat.

How Old Do Lake Superior’s Native Fish Get?

Mary Catherine’s 62 years is extraordinary—but she’s not the only elder in Superior’s neighborhood. Here’s how she compares with other native species (and native coregonines closely tied to Superior’s food web). “Max ages” reflect the oldest documented in credible studies or agency synopses; “typical” gives a realist’s range anglers and biologists often observe.

Why the spread? Cold, stable, low-productivity waters—like Superior’s offshore—tend to favor slower growth and longer life. Better age methods (sectioned otoliths) have also pushed known maxima upward for several species over the last two decades.
Why Mary Catherine Matters

Finding a 62-year-old trout in 2023 is a testament to the lake. Decades of lamprey control and careful harvest brought Superior’s native predators back to a largely self-sustaining state, with survey crews now reporting very high proportions of wild trout in Minnesota waters (98% in 2023). That resilience echoes across the food web—the same USGS and GLFC surveys that track lake trout also show big, episodic cisco year-classes that can shape the next decade of forage.
Lake Superior's climate is shifting fast. Explore a decade of wild weather—warmer waters, intense snowfalls, and fluctuating lake levels—and what it means for the future.

In the past decade, Lake Superior has become a fascinating case study for scientists and educators in how climate patterns are evolving and impacting our natural world. From record-high water temperatures to shifting ice cover and fluctuating lake levels, the changes in Lake Superior’s weather patterns have been said to be a not only beautiful, powerful, but also potentially concerning.

Drilling for ice core samples on Lake Superior

Warmer Water Temperatures and Declining Ice Cover

Lake Superior has seen consistently warmer water temperatures over the last decade, hitting record highs a few times over that time period. Warmer summers are one of the contributors to higher lake temperatures. Those higher temps can feel pleasant but they actually have a big impact on the lake’s ecosystem. As the air heats up, it fuels evaporation, increasing moisture in the atmosphere and affecting weather patterns around the lake.

This warmth also reduces ice cover in winter. Less ice means the lake stays open longer, making it more vulnerable to evaporation and leading to higher water levels in some seasons and lower ones in others. In the winter of 2020, for example, ice coverage on Lake Superior was notably low, which scientists linked to both warmer winter air and disruptions in the polar vortex, a pattern that typically brings frigid Arctic air southward over the Great Lakes. (sources: GLERL, U.S. Geological Survey, US EPA)

Dramatic Swings in Water Levels Due to Lake Superior’s Weather

Lake Superior’s water levels have fluctuated greatly. In the early 2010s, they were on the low side, only to rise dramatically to near-record highs by 2019. What’s causing this rollercoaster? Scientists state that climate change plays a role by influencing how much precipitation falls in the area and how quickly it evaporates. Recent years have seen more intense spring rains, filling the lake fast, followed by dry spells where levels drop back down as the lake “breathes” through evaporation. These fluctuations create challenges for managing shoreline erosion and maintaining habitats around the lake. (sources: Great Lakes Echo, GLISA)

Snowfall and Lake-Effect Snow

Lake Superior’s warming waters also have a hand in winter snowfall patterns according to experts. As cold air passes over the warmer lake in early winter, it picks up moisture, fueling intense lake-effect snow. This has made snowfall heavier and more unpredictable in regions downwind of the lake, like Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and northern Wisconsin. Some years have seen incredible snowfall, while warmer winters brought less. This variability affects not only local life but also regional tourism, as many people travel to the area to enjoy winter sports. (sources: GLISA, U.S. Geological Survey)

MODIS satellite image of ice cover on Lake Superior from 2014, via NOAA

Lake Superior, like the other Great Lakes, is showing us how climate change doesn’t just mean a slow, steady warming — it can also mean more dramatic shifts in temperature, snowfall, and water levels, sometimes within just a few years. Watching how this mighty lake responds by monitoring Lake Superior’s weather can give scientists insight into the future of other freshwater ecosystems.

“Passages: Ojibwe Migration to the Place Where the Food Grows on the Water” is the newest exhibit at the Capser Center at the Madeline Island Museum (in La Pointe, WI). La Pointe is the village on Madeline Island, part of the Apostle Islands archipelago. However, Madeline Island is the only island not included in the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. As a result, it is the only island where vehicles are allowed, and it is connected to the mainland by a ferry.

In the Anishinaabe (or Ojibwe) language the island is known as, Mooniingwanekaaning. The island is the ancestral homeland of Lake Superior Anishinaabe and it was ceded to the United States by the Treaty of La Pointe in 1842 (negotiated and signed on the island, just like the subsequent treaty in 1854).

The Madeline Island Museum was first opened in 1958 by Bella and Leo Capser, who had been long-time residents of the island. The museum is located on the former site of the American Fur Company. A decade later, it was transferred to the Wisconsin Historical Society, which continues to manage the site. In the 1990s, the main building of the museum was constructed.

Today, Madeline Island Museum consists of the main building which houses a gift shop, a theater, and several exhibit spaces, including the main exhibit space, where Passage is currently displayed. This building is connected to historic buildings of the American Fur Company, including their warehouse.

“Passages: Ojibwe Migration to the Place Where the Food Grows on the Water”

“Passages” debuted when the Madeline Island Museum open in May of 2024.

Passages features a mix of text, historic photos, maps, historic petitions and treaties, displayed on the outside wall of the exhibit room. Moving clockwise around the room from the opening up panels, visitors learn about Anishinaabe (Ojibwe) perspectives on the Apostle Islands and surrounding region, their migration story to the region, Chief Buffalo’s 1852 journey to Washington after the Sandy Lake Tragedy, the Oshcabawis Pictograph, and the Treaty of La Pointe in 1854.

The opening panel from the “Passages” exhibit and another panel discussing the significance of the Apostle Islands.

Overall, the exhibit tells engaging, interconnected stories that will deepen visitors’ sense of place for Madeline Island, the Apostle Islands, and the Chequamegon Bay region. The panels frequently incorporate ojibwemowin (the Ojibwe language) and quotations from Anishinaabe citizens throughout the western Lake Superior watershed. Screen shares stories and knowledge from Anishinaabe citizens of Bad River and Red Cliff, and in one corner, a film screens the award-winning documentary Bad River (with a bench so visitors who want to take in part of the film are welcome to take a break).

Panels highlighting the voices from citizens of the Bad River and Red Cliff Anishinaabe Nations.

It’s no secret that I love maps, and the maps were one aspect of the exhibit that I particularly enjoyed. Throughout the exhibit, maps are used to situate the stories and narratives. Historic maps are also included in the panels. These maps are interpreted through Anishinaabe perspectives, illustrating Anishinaabe people’s environmental knowledge that has been passed on through generations.

Two panels featuring maps to show the importance of place.

“Passages” also does an excellent job displaying and interpreting the Oshcabawis Pictograph and panels displaying the full text of the Treaty of La Pointe from 1854. The panel also highlights and enlarges particularly significant passages of the treaty, like Article 2 which discusses where Anishinaabe people’s reservations in the western Lake Superior watershed will be located. This is one of the most effective displays of a treaty I’ve seen in a museum.

Potential Places for Expansion

The only place where I feel “Passages” could benefit from more context is the big jump from the Anishinaabe migration to Madeline Island to the Sandy Lake Tragedy. I know space (and time and budget) are always the realistic limitations of exhibits. In an imaginary world with unlimited exhibit space and resources, I’d love to see a panel on relationships between Anishinaabe people and new arrivals working in the fur trade (French, British, Americans, etc.) to help fill this gap.

This could also be a place to mention the island’s namesake, Madeline Cadotte (usually spelled as Ikwezewe in the Fiero double vowel orthography and is commonly spelled as Equaysayway in primary sources). Her life and her family’s lives are an example of how involvement in the fur trade led to many passages throughout the Great Lakes for Anishinaabe and other Indigenous peoples.

The fur trade also connects to the Sandy Lake Tragedy. Brenda Child (Red Lake) and other historians have shown how the mid-19th century also corresponds with a demographic shift in (American territory) of the western Lake Superior watershed. Until this point, since European arrival in the area, Anishinaabe peoples were the demographic majority. However, from the mid-1800s on, Euro-Americans become the demographic majority.

A description of the Sandy Lake Tragedy from the “Passages” exhibit.

Material Culture That Connects Past and Present

To me, the highlight of “Passages” is the stunning display of three canoes in the center of the room. They are a striking visual representation of the theme “Passages” and make clear connections between the knowledge and craftsmanship of Indigenous peoples in the Apostle Islands region across generations.

A view of the two dugout canoes.

The center canoe is a dugout canoe made from white pine. Originally found on Madeline Island, it is part of the museum’s collection and is usually displayed in the old museum building. Another canoe is a birch bark canoe with a cedar bark sail constructed by the Great Lakes Lifeways Institute in 2023 constructed using traditional methods. The other is a dugout canoe made from white pine from the Red Lake Tribal Nation constructed in 2022 by the Great Lakes Lifeways Institute.

Together, the three canoes are an excellent example of how, despite political and environmental challenges, Indigenous peoples continue to adapt the methods used for generations so that these traditions endure into the present day.

This is the power of material culture—it serves a concrete connection across time and space.

A view of the birchbark canoe with the cedar sail.

“Passages” will probably also be on display at the Madeline Island Museum next year, but there may be additions or other changes, so I recommend visiting this fall if possible. I particularly recommend a visit if you live in the Chequamegon Bay area or a nearby region. While it is important for tourists to develop a deeper sense of place by learning Anishinaabe histories of the region, it is even more important for people who live on ceded territory in the region.

I’ve enjoyed all the rotating exhibits at the Madeline Island Museum since 2017, and “Passages” is definitely a favorite. Visitors can view “Passages” at the Madeline Island Museum till the end of the season.

A close-up of a hand-drawn map by Mike Wiggins (Bad River), the museum’s director, illustrating the importance of the Chequamegon Bay.

The Madeline Island Museum is currently open 10 am to 5 pm from Wednesday to Sunday until October 19. Visitors must take the ferry from Bayfield (or their own boat) to get to the museum. The museum is about a block away from the ferry docks on the island, so if it’s the main reason for your visit, you don’t need to take a vehicle. However, if you want to explore Big Bay Town Park or Big Bay State Park after visiting the museum, you should take a vehicle (or bike).

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="473" src="https://onlakesuperior.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/09/20240911_120048.jpg" alt="A view from the ferry locking at the ferry docks at La Pointe, including another docked ferry.
If you are new to making trips to Madeline Island, familiarize yourself with the ferry schedule and what businesses are open and what their hours are. Remember, La Pointe is a small town, and while a lot of tourists visit, it has more limited amenities than what some tourists may be used to. If you prepare in advance, you are more likely to enjoy your trip!

Discover the story of Taconite Harbor, a ghost harbor on Lake Superior. Explore its rise, decline, and lasting legacy through industry and historical preservation.

Nestled along the rugged shores of Lake Superior’s Minnesota North Shore, Taconite Harbor stands as a poignant reminder of a bygone era. Taconite Harbor offers a unique twist on the idea of a ghost town, as it is actually a ghost harbor. Once a thriving community, it has since faded into history, leaving behind stories of prosperity and decline.

Watch this short video by CBS News reporter John Lauritsen, as he looks at the rise and fall of Taconite Harbor in Cook County. The video was the inspiration for this article.

The Flourishing Years: A Town Built for Industry

From the mid-1950s to the mid-1980s, Taconite Harbor was a bustling hub of activity. Established primarily to support the burgeoning iron ore industry, the town was strategically positioned to facilitate the transportation of Taconite pellets, a key component in steelmaking. At its zenith, Taconite Harbor boasted around 20 homes, a town hall, a fire hall, and even a school complete with sports teams.

A significant element of the town’s success was the construction of a protective brick wall around two nearby islands on Lake Superior. This engineering feat safeguarded the boats transporting iron ore, ensuring smooth operations at the loading dock. The influx of workers required to manage this operation necessitated the rapid development of housing, leading to the creation of the entire community.

The ore dock in Taconite Harbor, Minnesota.
The Boom and Bust of the Taconite Industry

Taconite Harbor’s prosperity was closely linked to the iron ore industry, which experienced a dramatic boom in the 1950s and 1960s. The town became a critical point of operation, with Taconite pellets being shipped in vast quantities—up to 10 million tons annually—to the East Coast. The production of Taconite, a low-grade iron ore, became a cornerstone of the region’s economy, transforming the Iron Range and surrounding areas.

However, this boom was not to last. By the early 1980s, the Taconite industry faced a severe downturn. The economic crash was driven by several factors, including fluctuating market demand and the high costs of production. As a result, Taconite Harbor, once thriving, was hit hard. Families were forced to leave in search of new employment opportunities, marking the beginning of the town’s decline.

The Decline and Abandonment

The decline of Taconite Harbor mirrored the broader struggles of the Iron Range. As the industry faltered, the town’s once-bustling streets became eerily quiet. In the aftermath of the exodus, a real estate developer purchased many of the town’s homes, relocating and selling them individually. By the early 1990s, most of Taconite Harbor’s structures had vanished, and a decade later, even the dock that had once been central to the town’s economy was abandoned.

The commercialization of Taconite, detailed in historical records, reflects a larger narrative of industrial change. According to sources like MNopedia, the shift towards Taconite as a major industry was both a boon and a burden. The reliance on Taconite transformed the regional economy but also introduced new challenges that eventually contributed to the town’s downfall.

Preserving the Legacy: The Cross River Heritage Center

Today, the story of Taconite Harbor is preserved through efforts at the Cross River Heritage Center. Steve Shug, President of the Center, is dedicated to ensuring that the history of Taconite Harbor is not forgotten. The Heritage Center periodically hosts reunions and maintains an exhibit that highlights the town’s vibrant past. Follow the center on Facebook at: https://www.facebook.com/crossriverheritagecenter.

The exhibit offers a glimpse into the everyday life of Taconite Harbor’s residents, including colorful anecdotes like the Taconite dust that would turn freshly washed laundry red. Additionally, it recounts significant events such as a train derailment involving over 90 cars loaded with Taconite, a mishap that fortunately resulted in no serious injuries.

Shug emphasizes the importance of remembering Taconite Harbor as a lively, viable community. “It was a fun place to live and a fun place for kids to grow up,” he reflects in the CBS video at the beginning of this article. His commitment to sharing this history ensures that the memories of Taconite Harbor continue to live on, even if the physical town has disappeared.

Conclusion: A Legacy Remembered

Taconite Harbor may no longer be a physical place, but its legacy lives on through the stories of those who experienced its rise and fall. As a ghost harbor, it serves as a testament to the transformative power of industry and the enduring spirit of its people. Through preservation efforts and historical recounting, the tale of Taconite Harbor remains a vital part of Lake Superior’s rich history.

As I briefly mentioned above, I have a handful of wholesome memories at the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center, ranging from when I was a child to dawdling there with my Husband. Each time I visit, I find a new favorite nook within the visitor center, and I’ve collected yet another precious memory to add to my mind’s On Lake Superior memory bank.

When I was a youngster, my Mom, who is also a terrific writer On Lake Superior, would bring my siblings and me to the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center when we were ‘Up North‘ visiting my Great-Grandparents. We would spend hours there exploring the interactive exhibits, discovering new facts about the wildlife and profound history surrounding the Ashland area, and filling our minds with knowledge and our hearts full of fun.

One thing I absolutely loved that my Mom would do for us was write up a Scavenger Hunt before we went and hand it out to us when we got there. She would have little prizes for us, and we got to explore even more of the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center; is that a creative idea to keep kiddos busy or what?

Another fond memory I have of the visitor center is a recent one with my husband. He and I love to dawdle together, and during one of our winter visits, our dawdling brought us to the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center. Another terrific thing about a place like the nicely built visitor center that Ashland has is that it’s somewhere entertaining you can go when the weather isn’t all that great. We love that!

I wanted to show my husband the hallways upon hallways of memories I had there, as well as all of the history, art, and amazing facts that I knew he’d love to absorb.

We ended up spending a large chunk of time there, admiring the gorgeous artwork in the charming art gallery, reading the plaques with interesting information, gazing at extravagant quilts, checking out the gift shop, and spending the majority of the time in a quiet part of the building where you can watch the ducks in the pond below.

Those peaceful moments play out in my head often, and I’m thankful the Northern Great Lakes Visitor Center is a place where everyone can go and enjoy its many fine qualities.

“This is a really good visitor center. We made a detour to go via here when heading south and it was well worth it. Love the tower and the views across the area.
There are also a short walk from the visitor center around a lake.
Inside there are various displays across multiple floors. We got to see the ferry set sail several times a day for Madeline Island!

My favorite thing about being on Lake Superior is the vibe that radiates off of it. There’s this indescribable lakeside feeling that embraces you when you’re moseying about the sidewalks of Bayfield or you’re on a ferry to Madeline Island that you simply can’t obtain anywhere else.

It’s a feeling of tranquility and possibility; the lake truly slows things down and helps you appreciate your surroundings and the people around you.

We’ve all been in situations where a vacation feels like it’s going by way too fast, and we wish that time would slow down. I can’t say that it’s a guarantee, but in my experience of dawdling about with my Husband on Lake Superior, we’ve found that time feels slower and is more appreciated when we’re on Lake Superior.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="683" src="https://onlakesuperior.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/392931588_10224240383342614_5469111456948505756_n-1024x683.jpg" alt="Places to travel on Lake Superior.
I hope that helped you narrow down your decision! But if you’re still looking for a straight-shooting answer on when is the best time to visit Lake Superior, I’ll tell you my personal opinion. My husband and I have visited Lake Superior in every season, except for Spring, and we’ve always had a blast because there are activities to enjoy in each season. But I will say that our favorite trips on Lake Superior have been our Summer and Fall adventures.

Can You Swim in Lake Superior?

Can you swim in Lake Superior? Yes, in designated beach areas!

Lake Superior is a beautiful lake, but like every large body of water, there can be dangerous points, which is why it’s important to follow guidelines and only swim, kayak, canoe, and boat in areas that are appropriate.

There are dozens upon dozens of gorgeous beaches that will suit your beach-bumming fancy. Take a look at the Lake Superior Circle Tour Beaches Guide for a list of fabulous beaches on Lake Superior.

How Long Does it Take to Drive Around Lake Superior?

According to the Lake Superior Circle Tour, the distance around Lake Superior is roughly 1,300 miles (Holy Buckets, that’s a lot of Lake Superior land to cover; imagine the adventures to be had!).

This can translate to as short a few days or over a week depending on the stops you take, if you’re camping or driving, and what you want to get out of your trip. The choice is up to you!

My, my, that’s quite a mighty list of beautiful cities and towns, isn’t it? You can break down that list by researching towns that pique your interest and searching for activities that you want to engage in.

A way that my Husband and I determine a spot to adventure around is by beginning with a starting point. Typically, our starting point is a quirky coffee shop, but to each their own! Your starting point could be a hotel/B&B, a cozy restaurant, a campsite, or the downtown area of a town is a great place to start an adventure.

Unraveling the Mysteries of Lake Superior’s Movements

While Lake Superior, a jewel among the Great Lakes, exhibits movements that can be mistaken for a tide, the National Ocean Service confirms that the lakes are considered non-tidal.

The gravitational pull on the earth by the moon and the sun does produce the Lakes Spring Tide, yet its effect is minuscule, raising water levels by mere inches. Contrary to oceans with noticeable tides, like those in Nova Scotia, Lake Superior rises and falls to as dramatic a level.

Understanding Lake Superior’s complex water behavior involves more than just recognizing its long-term and short-term variations. While long-term variations depend on precipitation patterns, the short-term fluctuations are often misattributed to tides when, in fact, other forces are at play.

Debunking the Myth: Does Lake Superior Have Tides?

The notion that Lake Superior has tides similar to oceanic bodies is a common misconception. Despite the gravitational pull of the moon exerting its influence on all water bodies on Earth, the effects on Lake Superior are so slight that they hardly qualify as tides in the traditional sense.

Seiches: Lake Superior’s Unique Water Oscillations

A phenomenon called a seiche is often observed in Lake Superior. Seiches are large-scale oscillations that can significantly impact lake levels, often being mistaken for a tide due to their rhythmic nature.

How Seiches Differ from Tides

Unlike tides, which are driven by celestial gravitational forces, seiches are caused by atmospheric conditions like wind and pressure changes. These factors can create standing waves within the lake, leading to localized but dramatic shifts in water levels.

A seiche is what happens after a storm surge in a large body of water. When the pressure difference and wind that created the surge dissipates, the lake drops back to level and then overshoots, created a surge on the other side. The seiche can oscillate back and forth several times before it dies out.

The Impact of Seiches on Lake Superior

Seiches can affect the Great Lakes rhythm, causing sudden and unpredictable changes in water levels that can pose challenges for shipping and shoreline structures.

Great video of a seiche on Lake Superior itself

Factors Influencing Lake Superior’s Water Levels

Multiple factors contribute to the water level variations in Lake Superior, from meteorological to geographical influences, each playing a role in the lake’s unique hydrodynamic profile.

The Role of Wind and Atmospheric Pressure

Wind and atmospheric pressure can lead to phenomena such as storm surges, which, despite not being tides, can cause significant and rapid changes in water levels, contributing to coastal flooding.

Seasonal and Weather-Related Changes

Seasonal shifts and weather patterns also dictate the water levels in Lake Superior, leading to natural fluctuations that affect ecosystems and human activities alike.

Do Great Lakes Have Tides? The Forces Behind Water Movement in the Great Lakes

The intricate dance of water movement in the Great Lakes is influenced by a myriad of factors, each shaping the unique conditions that affect both natural habitats and human enterprises.

Gravitational Pull and Its Limited Effect on Lake Superior

Gravity’s tug on Lake Superior is nominal compared to its effect on the oceans. While the gravitational pull on the earth does act upon the lake, it is not the primary driver of water movement.

Earth’s Rotation and Topography: Shaping Water Dynamics

The Earth rotates, and this movement, along with the lake’s topography, plays a crucial role in the distribution and behavior of Lake Superior’s waters.

Understanding the Concept of Tide-Generating Forces

Tide-generating forces, such as the gravitational pull of celestial bodies, create tides in oceans but lead to a much subtle effect in Lake Superior, manifesting as gentle undulations rather than pronounced tides.

What is the Walleye Fish Life Cycle?

Spawning typically occurs in the spring when water temperatures reach the optimal range of 42 to 50°F (5.5 to 10°C). Walleye migrate to shallow, rocky areas along the shoreline or tributary rivers to deposit their eggs. Male walleye fertilize the eggs externally, and the adhesive nature of the eggs allows them to adhere to the substrate until they hatch in approximately two to four weeks. Young walleye, known as fry, feed on zooplankton and gradually transition to a diet of small fish and insects as they grow.

Walleye spawn image courtesy NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Laboratory

Migration and Spawning Patterns of Walleye Fish in Lake Superior

Walleye fish in Lake Superior exhibit fascinating migration and spawning behaviors as part of their life cycle, contributing to the dynamics of the lake’s ecosystem and offering anglers unique opportunities for fishing. Understanding these patterns is crucial for the conservation and management of walleye populations.

Walleye Spawning Migration

In the spring, as temperatures begin to rise and daylight hours lengthen, walleye undertake spawning migrations from deeper waters to shallower areas along the shoreline or tributary rivers of Lake Superior. These migrations are triggered by environmental cues such as water temperature and photoperiod, signaling the onset of the spawning season.

Selection of Walleye Spawning Sites

Walleye are selective in choosing spawning sites, preferring rocky or gravelly substrates with moderate water flow. These areas provide suitable conditions for egg deposition and protection against predators. Spawning sites are often located in nearshore areas, such as rocky reefs, points, and shoals, where walleye gather in large numbers to reproduce.

Walleye Spawning Behavior

During spawning, female walleye release their eggs into the water, while male walleye simultaneously release sperm to fertilize the eggs externally. This process typically occurs during the cover of darkness, as walleye are nocturnal feeders and exhibit increased activity during nighttime hours. The adhesive nature of the eggs allows them to adhere to the substrate, where they develop and hatch into larvae.

Post-Spawning Migration

After spawning, walleye may remain in the vicinity of spawning grounds for a brief period before returning to deeper waters to resume their feeding activities. Some individuals may undertake secondary migrations, moving to different areas of the lake in search of optimal foraging habitats. Walleye in Lake Superior are known to exhibit seasonal movements, with fluctuations in distribution influenced by factors such as water temperature, prey availability, and spawning activity.

Homing Behavior

Walleye demonstrate remarkable homing behavior, returning to the same spawning sites year after year with remarkable precision. This homing instinct is thought to be guided by a combination of sensory cues, including olfactory signals and memory of familiar landmarks. The ability of walleye to navigate back to their natal spawning grounds ensures the continuity of spawning populations and the amount of walleye present in Lake Superior.

Fishing for Walleye

Walleye fishing is a popular pastime in Lake Superior, attracting anglers from far and wide seeking to test their skills against this elusive predator.
What do Sturgeon Fish Look Like?

Sturgeon fish are known for their distinctive appearance, featuring elongated bodies covered in bony plates called scutes. These ancient creatures can grow to impressive sizes, with some individuals reaching lengths of over 7 feet and weighing hundreds of pounds. Their elongated snouts, equipped with sensory barbels, aid in detecting food along the lake bottom. Sturgeon fish are characterized by their cartilaginous skeletons, lack of scales, and unique heterocercal tails.

Where do Sturgeons Live?

Sturgeon fish are primarily found in the deep, cold waters of Lake Superior, where they inhabit both nearshore and offshore areas. They prefer sandy or rocky substrates, where they forage for small crustaceans, mollusks, and fish. While Lake Superior serves as a primary habitat, sturgeon may also venture into connecting rivers and streams for spawning purposes.

How Long do Sturgeon Fish Live?

The reproductive cycle of sturgeon fish is a remarkable phenomenon. These fish are known for their longevity, and can live for up to 100 years. Sexual maturity is not attained until they are well into their teenage years, with some species not reaching maturity until they are over 20 years old. Spawning typically occurs in the spring, with sturgeon migrating to spawning grounds in rivers or shallower areas of the lake. Female sturgeon release thousands of eggs, which are fertilized externally by the males. The eggs adhere to the substrate until they hatch into larvae, beginning their journey into adulthood.

Sturgeon fish populations in Lake Superior have faced significant challenges due to overfishing, habitat degradation, and obstacles to migration caused by dams and other human activities. Several species of sturgeon, including the Lake Sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens), are listed as threatened or endangered. Conservation efforts, including habitat restoration projects, fishing regulations, and stocking programs, aim to protect and restore sturgeon populations in Lake Superior and its tributaries.

Director of national conservation for the Wildlife Conservation Society of Canada Dan Krause stated in February 2023 “[The lake sturgeon is] one of the oldest species in the world, it’s been around since the time of the dinosaurs. They have persisted through lots of changes, but are struggling with humans.”

Cultural Significance

Sturgeon fish hold cultural significance for indigenous communities around Lake Superior. These fish have been an important food source and feature prominently in traditional ceremonies and folklore. Indigenous peoples have a deep respect for sturgeon, viewing them as symbols of strength, resilience, and connection to the natural world.

Migration and Spawning Patterns of Sturgeon Fish in Lake Superior

Sturgeon fish undertake remarkable migrations in Lake Superior and its surrounding areas as part of their reproductive cycle. These movements are critical for successful spawning and the perpetuation of sturgeon populations.

Spawning Migration

In the spring, as temperatures rise and daylight hours lengthen, sturgeon fish embark on their annual spawning migration. This migration typically begins when water temperatures reach a certain threshold, signaling the onset of the spawning season. Sturgeon are known to travel long distances from their deepwater feeding grounds to specific spawning sites in rivers, streams, or shallow areas of the lake.

Selection of Spawning Grounds

Sturgeon exhibit strong fidelity to their spawning grounds, returning to the same locations year after year. These sites are often characterized by suitable substrate for egg deposition, such as gravel or rocky bottoms, and sufficient water flow to provide oxygenation and prevent siltation. Spawning grounds are typically located in tributaries of Lake Superior or in shallower areas along the lake’s shoreline.

Spawning Behavior

Once sturgeon reach their spawning grounds, they engage in elaborate courtship rituals. Males compete for the attention of females, displaying behaviors such as breaching, thrashing, and nudging. Female sturgeon release thousands of eggs into the water, while males simultaneously release sperm to fertilize the eggs externally. The adhesive nature of the eggs allows them to adhere to the substrate, where they develop and eventually hatch into larvae.

You can actually witness the Sturgeon spawning first hand in places like Sturgeon Park in Shawano, WI. Visit there in the spring and you might see hundreds of the prehistoric fish for yourself!

Post-Spawning Migration

After spawning, sturgeon may remain in the vicinity of the spawning grounds for a period of time before returning to their deeper, feeding habitats in Lake Superior. Some individuals may undertake additional migrations, moving to different areas of the lake or venturing into connecting rivers and streams in search of food or suitable resting areas.

One of the most fascinating aspects of sturgeon migration is their homing behavior. Despite venturing far from their feeding grounds during spawning migrations, sturgeon demonstrate an uncanny ability to navigate back to their home waters with remarkable precision. This homing instinct is thought to be guided by a combination of sensory cues, including geomagnetic fields, olfactory cues, and memory of familiar landmarks.

Sturgeon Conservation

Understanding the migration and spawning patterns of sturgeon fish is crucial for their conservation. Identifying and protecting critical spawning habitats, restoring connectivity in rivers and streams, and implementing measures to mitigate obstacles to migration, such as dams and culverts, are essential for ensuring the long-term viability of sturgeon populations in Lake Superior and its surrounding areas.

The migration and spawning patterns of sturgeon fish in Lake Superior exemplify the intricate relationship between these ancient creatures and their environment. By studying and safeguarding these critical aspects of their life cycle, we can contribute to the preservation of sturgeon populations for generations to come.

Final Thoughts

The sturgeon fish of Lake Superior represent a remarkable example of resilience and adaptation in the face of environmental challenges. As guardians of these ancient creatures, it is our responsibility to ensure their continued survival for future generations to appreciate and cherish.
