Lake Superior 3D Art from Azimuth24 Nautical Models

Justin Douthat went to school in Michigan and sailed for several years as a mate on various lake freighters hauling iron ore, stone, and sand throughout the Great Lakes. Life pulled him out to Colorado, where he now lives, and he quickly realized how much he missed the Great Lakes region. About a year ago, he decided to start a business that would allow him to stay connected with the Great Lakes region, build his 3D design skills, and continue that connection to the Great Lakes region — Azimuth24 Nautical Models was the result.

The process of creating these impeccable models of the great lakes starts with meticulously merging topographical and bathymetric data in 3D modeling software. The models are then sent to their 3D printers—some of which take as long as seven days to print. After printing, the models are coated in a protective enamel before epoxy is poured in and hand-brushed to follow the shoreline of the lake. We have one of these Lake Superior 3D models in our home and it looks fantastic!

Chatting With Jackie of Cookies in the Valley

It’s always special to know more about the origin and the talent behind such a marvelous establishment, and it was an absolute treat to have the opportunity to chat with Jackie! The baker, decorator, and visionary for Cookies in the Valley. Read along and discover the inspiration and beginnings of this sweet-treat dream!

Taste and smell are often associated with memory. Can you recall a time when baking began to call to you? Did someone special to you introduce you to baking, or did you happen upon it on your own?

I have always enjoyed baking, I can’t remember one specific memory that started it all but since I was a young girl I loved being in the kitchen and reading cookbooks and trying different recipes

Cookies in the Valley is such a sweet name; how did you come about landing on that one? Were there any other contenders?

Cookies in the Valley came to me for a possible idea when I was trying to come up with a name and I wanted to incorporate “me” into the name; the Marengo Valley is important to me because it’s where my husband and I started our life as husband and wife and where we’ve brought our children home to and where we continue to raise them.

I have a lot of memories in my childhood of visiting my great grandparents in Marengo with my grandma and it’s always been a place I’ve loved so it was important to incorporate it into the name of my cookie business.

There weren’t any other contenders because nothing else felt “me” and once I came up with Cookies in the Valley, I knew nothing would compare to it or be more “me” of a name

On Cookies in the Valley’s Facebook Page, you’ve mentioned your lovely family; do your kiddos ever help you with the inspiration for your cookie designs or get to help you with making the cookies?

My kids definitely help with inspiration for cookie designs and flavors (my oldest son has some flavor requests for me to try so we will see if they make it to the official list of flavors or not).

My kids don’t help make the cookies, mostly for sanitary reasons but also because it’s my quiet time in the midst of raising young children- when I am in my cookie room, it’s a way for me to relax and be creative.

Did you face some challenges in the early stages of learning how to decorate cookies? What’s a piece of advice you would give an aspiring cookie decorator?

Early on (and still to this day) I struggled with thinking my cookies were worth anything or that anyone would really want to buy them. There’s so many other talented bakers out there that it took quite a bit of convincing from others that my cookies had any sort of value.

One piece of advice I would give an aspiring cookie decorator would be to practice, practice, practice and then practice some more. Work on developing your own recipes and menu and find your own niche within this huge community of cookie decorators, some bakers may excel in some areas and you may excel where they struggle and that’s perfectly okay.

To me, I think recipe development is the utmost important part of getting started; oftentimes when people think of decorated cookies they think they will be hard and crunchy but not all cookies are created the same- a thick soft cookie is an absolute must for me so I’ll only add a flavor to my menu if it meets my standards.

When you’re in your baking and decorating mode, do you listen to music or a podcast? What’s your baking station like?

My baking and decorating days are mostly spent in silence; almost always you can find my decorating or baking during naptime or when my kids are in bed for the evening and adding in any sort of noise clutters my brain and makes it not as relaxing so I prefer the quiet. If I do turn on anything to listen to while decorating it is a Gordon Ramsey show of some sorts or 90s/early 2000s country.

If someone wanted to place an order, how should they go about doing that?

I take all my orders thru messages on my Facebook page, I’m currently booked thru September (2024) for custom orders but I will have a back-to-school presale opening up mid August (2024) so people can keep an eye out on my Facebook page for that

Q & A With Shannon from Shannon’s Stained Glassery

Shannon was incredibly kind in our conversations and for taking the time to answer a few questions about the beginning of her journey with Shannon’s Stained Glassery and where the shop and her artistic journey are today.

Not only did I learn a lot about Shannon and the shop, but I was also filled with excitement about stained glass. WARNING: the following joyful Q&A may make you want to take a Stained Glass class; I know I want to!

[On Lake Superior] Stained Glass, and Glass Art as a whole, is such a beautiful medium to work with. Did glass art come to you, or did someone in your life introduce you to it?

[Shannon] A little of both. In 2006 we relocated to Superior, WI from NE Minneapolis, MN. When we moved up our twins were infants and while I am originally from this area I didn’t really know many people.

The house that we own has the original stained glass windows, so my husband suggested that I take classes at the local stained glass store close to our house. I could learn how to fix our windows as well as have an activity outside of the house.

I started taking all sorts of classes including fusing, jewelry, torchwork beads and stained glass. After losing my job in 2012 I was unsure of what direction to go next when my favorite store went up for sale!

Being an artist on Lake Superior must be a dreamy pool of inspiration; do you find that you pull inspiration from being on Lake Superior, or does the lake bring you to a happy place during your creation process?

I would say the lake brings me to a happy place. While I do find I add the Aerial Lift Bridge to many pieces I just really enjoy the fresh air and life of the lake.

Many people remember their first profound memory with their passion, but what do you recall is the moment you wanted to stick with glass art through the cracks, breaks, and beautiful turns?

Art was never a passion of mine, growing up I always dreamed of becoming a veterinarian. After 5 years of college that dream didn’t seem like the appropriate path I was headed towards, life took me down another direction to working in accounts receivable.

I loved so much about that field but again life sent me change when I was laid off. I took the summer to find myself and what I wanted to do ‘when I grew up’ when purchasing Peachie’s Stained Glass became an option.

A scary idea but once I inquired about it things fell into place quickly and in November 2012 I reopened Peachie’s as Shannon’s Stained Glassery. It didn’t take long for me to realize that was a great decision for myself and our family.

Shannon’s Stained Glassery lovingly took the reins for Peachie’s Stained Glass some time ago; let the love of glass art carry on! Is there something that you have learned or carried forth from Peachie’s into the shop that’s hustling and bustling today?

While I have made changes and added additional art mediums to our offerings here, many of the values and traditions that Peachie started with have continued to this day. Peachie has always worked very closely with me throughout the years to help me succeed. She is still here to this day teaching most of our night classes.

Your About section on Shannon’s Stained Glassery mentions that you can also help repair broken treasures. Has there been a noteworthy repair project that you’ve done that was challenging but fulfilling?

A recent repair of a rooster lamp!! It has been by far the craziest and toughest repair. When I plugged the lamp in it was so worth all the time as well as the hug when it was picked up!

In 2017 Shannon’s Stained Glassery added a delightful Paint Your Own Pottery Studio! What inspired you to come to that idea, and how has the outcome been?

It was an idea the Peachie had toyed with but never had the chance to add it in. In 2017 everything seemed to fall into place so easily and quickly where we knew it would be a great addition to our studio.

Fused glass is considered a fired art, paint your own pottery is also considered a fired art so it fits well into our repertoire. Families that come in to shop for presents or parents that are shopping for glass and supplies love having that available.

Plus our annual Paint with Santa event on Small Business Saturday is well loved by all ages!!

If someone is interested in working with glass art but they’re feeling hesitant to, what would be your words of reassurance or wisdom to get them on board and give it a whirl?

Just look through our Facebook page at all of the beginners who thought at one point they couldn’t do it or it was just out of reach. Everyone who takes a class here walks away with a piece they love and it is so apparent in their smiley faces in their pictures!

If stained glass isn’t for them then fusing is a great avenue that is incredibly beginner friendly! Mosaics can be a great introduction to glass as well, there is truly something for everyone in this building!!

Would you like to tell us about any big plans or events for Shannon’s Stained Glassery?

This weekend (19th & 20th of April) we have our Spring Open House and Art show, one of two really big events for the year. Glass artists bring in their work for display, everyone receives a prize package plus throughout the sale weekend attendees vote on their favorite.

Also during this open house we have glass brought in special for the event and we put most everything in the store on sale for 20% off. We hold a similar event in the Fall, the only difference is for the art show the artists must stay within a theme.

In May I am one of 200 small businesses that will be attending an event through Meta’s Leader’s Network for National Small Business week. While there we will get the opportunity to advocate for small businesses with our Senators and Representatives. I am very proud to be a voice for our area and other small businesses!

I’m speaking from experience!

The first time I saw Jordan Sundberg and Natalie Salminen Rude‘s book was while my husband and I were dawdling around the Dovetail Cafe. I hope you enjoy reading these Q&As with Jordan Sundberg as much as I enjoyed corresponding with her and becoming inspired myself. Buckle those artist seatbelts; it’s going to be an inspiring ride!

Living next to beautiful scenery like Lake Superior must be delightful; do you find inspiration from the lake and other natural beauties around you?

I’m pretty sure every day is inspired by the lake and other nature around us. Duluth is so lucky to be surrounded by and saturated with creeks, cliffs, trails, skiing, and high hills. I learned as a child that nature is such a hospitable place. There’s a kindness and welcome in nature, not to mention the overwhelming beauty and power. If I take the time to not only exercise in it or take in a quick view of the lake, but actually become quiet and present in nature, so many ideas come. Slowing down is essential.

Can you recall one of the first times you felt a connection with your artwork and pulled into a calling for it?

I have always loved making things–food, gifts, bouquets, forts, radio shows. If I look back on my childhood, some of my most alive, in-sync moments are making things with my two hands for others to enjoy. I am still surprised people pay me for things I make because it feels so natural to me and not like work! There was a point in middle school, though, where I remember doing projects in art class and just being flooded with excitement and energy to do far more than expected. My teacher noticed, too, and would give me art supplies on the side and encourage me extravagantly. There was a recognition that I had some gifting in me for art and knew I could make art happily forever.

What was it like to collaborate on the book “Fables of the North Shore” with Natalie Salminen Rude? Could you tell us about the book itself?

A gift! Best described as two friends playing! We got to experience the joy of openhearted collaboration where creativity builds upon itself in magical ways. We both had the perspective that anything could be possible and went along following the happy trail of ideas that came from that!

Are there any exciting ventures for you and your art in the future that you’d like to share?

I have been working towards picture book writing and illustration! I am very, very excited to hopefully make books one day, as I believe picture books are some of one of the most important, meaningful, powerful art forms out there. Children are smarter than we often think. Making books that respond to their genius wonder and experience in the world would be a dream come true.

The beauty of being on Lake Superior is hard to capture because it’s not only a visual aesthetic but a feeling that fills you up when you’re in its presence. And I dare say that Jordan Sundberg has bottled up that spark effortlessly in her magnificent pieces.

I highly encourage you to take the time to admire her work and support this talented artist, as well as other artists in Minnesota like Natalie Salminen Rude, by purchasing a piece or multiple! Q & A With Natalie Salminen Rude

Admiring artists in Minnesota while you’re dawdling about on Lake Superior is one thing, but getting the opportunity to admire their work AND having a lovely conversation with them about their artistic journey? Now, that’s a little slice of inspirational magic pie. I imagine the flavor is a combination of sunshine and what we all daydream clouds feel like.

As I mentioned, I had the wonderful privilege of asking Natalie Salminen Rude a few questions about her life as an artist, her love of being on Lake Superior, and a peek inside her and artist/friend Jordan Sundberg‘s book Fables of the North Shore.

While reading Natalie Salminen Rude‘s answers, I was filled with a frolicking flutter of giddy inspiration and reverting back to those early years of free-for-all imagination. I hope you receive a similar pep in your step after reading these delightful answers brought to you by one of the talented and passion-filled artists in Minnesota. Let’s give it up for Natalie Salminen Rude!

What’s one of the earliest memories you can recall of you tapping into your true creative self?

Somewhere in my elementary years, I found myself in my blue-carpeted bedroom closet with a scrap of paper, a lighter, and a “brick red” crayon. I would melt the crayon with the lighter until the wax from the crayon would drip onto the paper. Something drew me to hold that little scrap of paper up to the bare light bulb illuming my closet. I was undone. The beauty! The way the light came through the paper and lit up the deep red until it glowed?! I can still feel the same profound ache within my chest – it was the longing for beauty.  

I remember thinking “I need to live with this!” But how could I? I was always trying to find ways to get that little piece of paper to stay in front of the light bulb permanently.

The thought crossed my mind that I could start the paper on fire and that that would be bad. (In hindsight I’m thankful for that wee bit of little girl wisdom!) For as long as I can remember, every time I went into my closet I would squint my eyes and stretch my arm out as far as I could reach and hold that little piece of paper up to the light bulb. It was a moment of absolute delight wrestling with absolute longing. 

Do you have a quote/saying that you remind yourself of when you’re running into artist/writer’s block? Or that inspires you to create?

Yes! I have a few paragraphs of instructions of sorts that I have taped to my studio wall by author Elizabeth O’Connor. Essentially it’s about centering yourself beyond distractions and the opinions of others and then giving “oneself to the work at hand, exercising the gifts that will give the work breath.” Over the years I have come to see that I co-create with God. So if something is stuck, I’ve got a great studio partner to work things out with.

Lake Superior is a happy place for so many; what’s one of your favorite memories on Lake Superior?

Definitely my childhood memories of Lake Superior are my favorite because I believe they are the foundation of my artistic sensibilities. This is where I first encountered the magnificent gravity of natural beauty!

Up the north shore, during a family camping trip I remember hopping along the great round stones of the Baptism River until it flushed out into the lake. Oh! To think of my little heart encountering the weight of the horizon line beneath all that deep blue water! Gasp! The cold stones of every shoreline!

The imagery continues its influence as these design elements continue to show up consistently in my work. I just get such a kick out of it all. We are so blessed to have Lake Superior at our fingertips. To really imagine how it’s shaped so many people’s creative work is jollification itself!

If you were to give a note of inspiration to any writers or artists out there, what would you tell them?

JUST DO IT. Get to it, get into it, go for it.

Poet Mary Oliver talks about one of humanity’s greatest regrets as having a creative impulse and then not acting on it. Let’s not live in regret!

The practical side of “just do it” means get yourself a deadline. (Seriously, best advice!) But don’t do it alone. Book that show. Hire a coach. Have accountability with someone who wants you to soar. Works like a charm!

We need your art. We need you. The world needs your particular expression of creativity. There is no one but you that can make the work that is swirling around in your head and your heart.  

Are there any future projects/events that you wish to share?

Thanks for asking! A long, long, long time ago while in collage I worked at the beloved New Scenic Cafe along the North Shore of Lake Superior on our visual treat that is Highway 61. While I was working there I had a small show of oil paintings and woodblock prints. These were inspired by my getting to stare into the horizon of the lake everyday while working.  

Now, over twenty years later I am excited to show work once again at such a special place for lovers of the North Shore that showcases a truly epic display of creativity through their menu, talented staff and lovely setting along the lake. The show runs October 8th – November 25th, 2024.

Along with learning about Natalie Salminen Rude inspiring origin stories of her artwork, childhood, and passion for all things entangling creativity, I also got the opportunity to ask her a few questions about the beautiful book Fables of the North Shore. She collaborated on creating with another talented artist from the Duluth area, Jordan Sundberg!

Can you share with us the inspirational spark that was ignited to begin the epicness of Fables of the North Shore?

The initial spark was the fabulous Mr. Joshua Lindstrom, owner of Fika Coffee in Lutsen. He invited Jordan Sundberg and I to collaborate on a show for Fika. He said, “Why don’t you guys do something around your friendship?”

We were thrilled at the idea and since neither of us had collaborated with another artist before to this extent we were jazzed at all the possibilities of what we could do. Jordan had the brilliant idea of writing fables right away.  Art-filled storytelling around the place we loved best? It was an obvious lightening bolt “Yes!” for both of us.

What did you take away from your collaboration on Fables of the North Shore with Jordan Sundberg that you feel may inspire you in your future projects?

At the onset of the project we both sensed a very divine invitation to play. I truly believe that accessing our childlike wonder, freedom, silliness and unique sense of playfulness is where every single project should begin.

Even projects for me that have a more serious nature are still rooted in play. It comes from a confidence of knowing that I’m loved and there’s nothing I can do, no performing or striving, to make my work any more legitimate than it already is.

The Fables are such a great reminder of that. And as far as collaboration goes, Jordan and I learned heaps and had such a ball throughout the entire adventure. I loved how collaborating pushed us further than if we had set out to do the project alone. Our friendship deepened and we were able to offer each other tremendous amounts of encouragement.

Our playfulness tumbled into not only a successful project but into the wisdom that seriousness doesn’t necessarily guarantee success, though that is something the world would like us to believe. The spoils from these victories will live long into my future projects. 

What has life been like after Fables of the North Shore came out? Do readers have any favorite parts?

Life has been an even greater hoot since the Fables came out! Jordan and I talk often of how much ding-dang fun we had and the best part is seeing how others immediately pick up on that just by reading the fables and engaging with the illustrative art work.

There is such a radiant joy in these stories that folks can’t help but catch. Readers have so many favorites! It’s impossible to nail down a single favorite, but I would say that one of the highlights for me in seeing how folks connect with the stories and characters is how they bring the fables to life in their own way.

A few examples: we had a Nordic ski club in Duluth perform “The Wizard in Denim” (a fable about skiing in jeans) as a skit for a fundraiser, Jordan and I organized a “Ski in Jeans” party at a local ski hill (absolutely hilarious as you can imagine!) and currently there is a dance company in Minneapolis using the fable “Silma the Smelt” as fodder for their choreography and story line for an upcoming performance.

We have also received many videos of people reading the fables to others. There is a shared, communal joy within this little book that just has to come out and into real life. It’s wild. 

There are a few things in life we should stop for: smelling flowers and admiring an artist’s hard work. Who Wrote Fables of the North Shore?

Fables of the North Shore was brought to life by two incredibly talented artists, Natalie Saimien Rude and Jordan Sundberg, who love creating memories on Lake Superior and writing quirky stories that become books about fables.

I had the wonderful opportunity to correspond with both artists and have a lovely chat about their artist journies and the fabulous, collaborative experience of creating Fables of the North Shore. To say I felt privileged to connect with two talented individuals and take a peek inside their creative process is an understatement. Especially coming from a bookworm like myself, I was super duper excited, even more so after finishing Fables of the North Shore and writing a book review!

With that being said, let’s hear straight from the artists themselves about their thoughts and feelings when crafting in tandem to bring Fables of the North Shore to life and become a classic on Lake Superior book about fables. From the get-go of the introduction, ‘Joy-Filled Fruition,’ I was filled to the brim with a warm glow of optimism, silliness, and giddiness to start reading this book! It’s the perfect way to set the tone for such an adoring collection of on Lake Superior Tales. You’ll have to keep yourself from completing this captivating book in one sitting because it’s entertaining, dazzling with artwork page to page, and such a fun and refreshing read.

As someone who has read collections of tales before, you can sincerely tell that a huge amount of passion, thoughtfulness, detail, talent, and love went into every single page by both artists, Natalie Salminen Rude and Jordan Sundberg. Sometimes, it feels as though a book has been produced for the sole purpose of cycling through the shelves and pushing out millions of copies. There isn’t nearly enough heart and soul in it. That is not the case with Fables of the North Shore! This book is packed tight like a vintage suitcase, overflowing with great intentions, friendship, silliness, and quirky fables with incredible multimedia art.

Fables of the North Shore (Available to purchase on Etsy and at Dovetail Cafe!) is gorgeously and thoughtfully put together. Its array of small details (both in printing quality and humorously printed notes) creates an entire fictional experience that you’re immersed in from the time you start and finish. Heck, even after the fact! I’ll never see skiing, and long silver breads the same again– in the best way, too!
