During a girls’ trip to Grand Marais, driving up the gorgeous scenic Highway 61 and taking a pit stop at Betty’s Pies, we came across this hidden gem of goats and Mini Golf.

When we were thinking of things to do in Grand Marais Minnesota, Putt n Pets definitely stood out for several reasons. The combination of a fun and inclusive activity like mini golf plus the unique atmosphere of a beautiful 18-hole course, fun decor, goats, turkeys, and peacocks? It was like finding Northwoods treasure!

Upon entering Putt n Pets Mini Golf, you’ll see that it is a self-service paying station where you’ll get your trusty clubs, golf balls, and snacks if the front desk is open. Don’t forget to bring some quarters for feed if you’d like the neat experience of feeding the animals; I’d highly recommend it for a true Putt n Pets experience.

Another fun bit about the entrance is the wooden map of the United States which has pins in place of where visitors have come from. How neat is that? During our experience there we ran into a kind Canadian family who was also incredibly excited at the opportunity to feed the adorable goats. You just never know the kind of stories you’ll gain from taking a chance on a quirky experience like this!

Along with its well-maintained holes and smile-worthy decor (can you spot the Statue of Liberty in the photo below?), the atmosphere of Putt n Pets Mini Golf is truly a Northwoods experience. You’re surrounded by critters, good company, and greenery, and you’re not far from Lake Superior at all, it doesn’t get much more Up North quintessential than that!

Another thing I love about Putt n Pets Mini Golf, aside from it being probably one of the most amusing experiences of mini golf in Minnesota, is that the activity of mini golf is fairly inexpensive and can be enjoyed no matter what age you are.

Adults, teenagers, and children can all find something to enjoy at Putt n Pets; why even the very little ones who can’t hold up their clubs yet. Because if you aren’t into the mini golf of it all, there’s always the entertainment of watching and feeding the animals!

Plus, right next to the parking lot, there are a few coin-operated rides for kiddos to look forward to and enjoy as well as a silly photo opp to commemorate your Putt n Pets Mini Golf experience!

“This place is the bomb ! Not only are the courses well and beautifully designed, there are goats, chickens,turkeys,pheasants and a peacock.

You can buy a handful of treats for them for a quarter, and there’s a tower with a ramp to it that the goats can climb. Then you put treats in a bucket at the bottom and they pull it up to the tower with a rope!

We paid a quarter to give some feed to the turkeys and they loved it. There is also a “goatel” (goat hotel) with some adorable goats that you can feed!

Each hole has a wood block with an animal track or leaf that you can try to identify, with the key on your score card.

Overall, a fun and laid-back atmosphere, great for a quick afternoon activity while you’re up north.“

Even on a late Friday morning in the off-season, this iconic establishment was hustling and bustling, and after we took our first bites of our food and chosen pie slices, it’s not hard to see why so many travel far and wide to get in on this experience. And if the pie options and classic atmosphere weren’t enough, you can look out the window and raise your fork full of goodness up to Lake Superior; the view is fantastic!

On a girl’s trip up to Grand Marais our little troop of gals stopped by Betty’s Pies for a bite to eat before the big trek up Scenic Highway 61. Although the wait was unexpected (worth it!), the fantastic flavors of food and pie lived up to their Northwoods hype.

We were seated in what the hostess referred to as ‘the best seats in the house‘; the back part of the restaurant which is a separate room overlooking Lake Superior. There was a pleasant lake house vibe that wrapped us up in the warm natural light of the room while we sipped on our coffee and visited as our orders were being whipped up. Betty’s Pies has a wonderful classic diner atmosphere with friendly service and that Northwoods charm we know and love.

A Slice of Betty’s Pies History

Would you believe that Betty’s Pies was actually a Fish Shack at first? The humble beginnings of this Up North tradition began in the year 1957 with the vision, created by Betty’s Father Aleck, of providing a quaint place to grab a bite to eat for fishermen and women near the Stewart River.

Working with her Father, Betty put her magical cuisine in the bellies of anglers, and soon what started as a simple Fish Shack pit spot for donuts and coffee grew into a larger menu of food and delicious pies. By 1958 the shack was transformed into Betty’s Cafe and would one day blossom into the iconic Betty’s Pies we know and love.

It’s beautiful to see how far one family’s dream and vision can go and the evolutions it takes on the way. For now, since Betty and her Father Aleck took a chance on their Fish Shack idea, so many of us folks who love being on Lake Superior can make memories with full stomachs at Betty’s Pies.

We liked all of them except for the toffee cream, it was too creamy. The best though is the great lakes, tasted a lot of flavors in that pie. Not too sweet and crunchy.

Q&A with the Crew of Minnesota Whitewater Rafting

I had the pleasure of talking with Erin M. Engstrom, one of the proud owners of Minnesota Whitewater Rafting along with her husband, Colin Engstorm, about the origins and fun of Minnesota Whitewater Rafting. Folks, you’re in for a real treat — there are stories, lessons, and more in store with this Q&A!

Erin has had a wide range of adventure experiences from being a member of the Air National Guard to working in the medical field, to making Minnesota Whitewater Rafting the awesome experience it is. We’ll also be hearing from other staff members about their experiences with Minnesota Whitewater Rafting; there’s a lot of adventure to come.

Without further ado, let’s get into these questions and answers all about Minnesota Whitewater Rafting!

Whitewater Rafting is an incredible sport and adventure to partake in; how did it become a family interest and blossom into Minnesota Whitewater Rafting?

[Erin] Our goal as husband and wife was to find something we could work at together. We started as a team working at Air Shows and wanted to expand on that teamwork we had there.

Colin was a Boy Scout leader for several years and has shared his love of the outdoors with me. We purchased a well-established and well-reputed business from our extended family to keep the tradition going.

[MWR Staff]The entire experience working at MWR feels like family. We all have very different backgrounds and working as a team on the river brings everyone together.

They say that water holds memory, and I’m sure we can’t even fathom how many memories the St. Louis River is holding thanks to your incredible adventures! Does a particular memory come to mind when you think of one of your favorite experiences with Minnesota Whitewater Rafting?

[Erin] Watching someone’s first-time experience is fantastic. They are often nervous or even scared at the start of the trip; they usually come back beaming and laughing, ready to go again. 

[MWR Staff] Watching families enjoy their vacation time together. They play-fight to be the first into or out of the raft, they have splashing fights together. They go home with great memories.

Are there any misconceptions about whitewater rafting that you’d like to shed some light on?

[MWR Staff] People often think that it isn’t something that they can do. Then they do it and love it.

It’s a totally great time for those without any experience!

[Erin] Years ago I fell in love with kayaking, but I have always done the more “lazy river” kayaking. My first time rafting was like seeing the river for the first time. I fell in love all over again!

From the experiences that Minnesota Whitewater Rafting offers, which would you recommend for someone who isn’t experienced and someone who has participated in whitewater rafting before?

[Erin] The river is always changing; it’s high and fast in the spring and lower in the late summer/early fall. People should be aware of that when they are booking their trips…the ride is much more tame in the fall.

[MWR Staff] People think that the lower water means that there is less “whitewater”; this is not always the case as the lower water creates different features as the rocks are revealed. This can be a challenging ride as well, and there is a lot more splashing.

Although we may be biased here at On Lake Superior, we love an adventure that takes us near its grand waters. Are there any water adventure recommendations you’d give for a Lake Superior traveler?

[Erin] Kayak to the sea caves! Or if you just want to watch something fun…Sailing club goes out every Wednesday evening in the summer; always fun to watch.

Here’s a fun question for you: Does the crew have a pump-up song or routine to get them amped up for a new adventure?

[Erin] We do not…everyone always shows up excited to play at work. No one ever really needs any pumping up.

What’s one of your favorite things about being an expert guide with Minnesota Whitewater Rafting?

[Erin] The joy that families and friends have together; watching everyone gather around laughing over their photos is incredible.

[MWR Staff] Seeing people screaming in fear and then immediately start laughing is the best.

Seeing others share their memories on the [Minnesota Whitewater Rafting] FB page is great.

Remembering someone from the year before since they came back again and brought new friends!

Q & A with Suri Fina Alpaca Farm

It takes a dedicated team filled with heart and passion to make Suri Fina Alpaca Farm the beauty it is, and I had the wonderful opportunity to talk with Abby Klema, the visionary of one of the finest Alpaca farms in Wisconsin, about the origins of Suri Fina and her family’s memories and experiences with the farm.

Not only should you expect to be tickled by some pretty fun and interesting facts, but there’s also a precious story tucked in there that brought little tears to my eyes — talk about a remarkable experience!

‘Suri Fina’ is a beautiful, eye-catching name; how did the Suri Fina Alpaca Farm name come together?

I chose the name Suri Fina Alpaca Farm because we raise the Suri breed of alpaca.

Suri is the more rare of the 2 breeds (suri and huacaya). And fina is spanish for fine.

Suri alpaca is a luxurious fiber, very fine and silky. I wanted the name of the farm to reflect that.

On your website’s About page, it’s mentioned that you’re the chief farmer, dreamer, and persona of the Suri Fina Alpaca Farm; can you recall the first seeds of inspiration and passion that came to you to want to build and pursue this farm?

I think the dream of farming, or living a rural lifestyle was planted early in my childhood.

I grew up in the city of Duluth, and often had a menagerie of pets: bunnies, cats, dogs, hamsters, tropical fish. My aunt had a horse and boarded it outside of town.

One summer she got me riding lessons. I loved it at the farm. I was curious about the kids who boarded the bus after school. I imagined they got to go home to barns and animals and the space to run free.

Are there any interesting Alpaca facts you believe most people aren’t aware of?

Alpacas are in the camel family and they hum.

Yours and your husband Jamie’s son, Miles, has grown up with the farm, based on the sweet pictures on your website. What was it like to witness him grow up in a farm environment, and do you have any favorite memories with your son on the farm?

As a farming parent, I’m never sure how much Miles actually learns or enjoys the farm, but several years ago we had an alpaca give birth in poor weather.

The cria (alpaca newborns are called crias) was out in the elements in the pasture with the herd. We carried the cria back to the barn and put her and her mom in a stall. I told Miles to keep an eye on her while I hurried off to gather supplies.

When I came back, he was blow drying the cria and rubbing her with a towel and telling me all about how the pair was getting on, over the ten minutes I had been gone — exactly what I would have done.

Miles has his own life and interests, but I see that he is growing up with a good farming awareness and that is neat to see.

I’m sure each Alpaca has its own quirky personality, and you get to know them very well! Do alpacas pick favorites?

Do alpacas pick favorites? Like favorite people? Not sure.

But Rhyme likes to approach me for back scratches.

Bane is often watching me from a safe distance.

McKayla seems to enjoy young visitors and seems to enjoy having them fawn over her.

I can only imagine that there’s a lot of love, care, and especially hard work that revolves around the days. On particularly challenging days, is there something you say to yourself to get you through that tough moment? Has working on a farm taught you lessons you wouldn’t have received otherwise?

Take the good with the bad. As with anything in life there will be losses, struggles, things that didn’t work out as planned, same on a farm.

I try to focus on the things I can control and not dwell on bad things that happen. There are a lot of emotional ups and downs, and I have learned to let the emotions come, but to lace up those boots and keep on keeping on.

Farming is a long game and showing up day after day is what it takes to survive. Experience also has taught me that even though there are struggles, it will work out in the end.

This is my 16th year farming!

From the fun and cute pictures on the Suri Fina Alpaca Farm, I can see a lot of critters aside from Alpacas that are moving and grooving there! What other critters do you, your husband, and your son care for, and how does everyone coexist?

Right now in addition to the alpacas we have a flock of laying hens. We have transitioned to only having chickens on the farm during the warm months. We take a 2-3 month break from chickens in the winter.

We have had ducks, a llama, and feeder pigs in the past. The pigs were especially fun, they have goofy personalities and make the greatest noises.

We boarded a horse for a short time and also pastured a friend’s cows one summer.

We have 2 cats and used to have a friendly St Bernard. We may find the right dog again in the future.

My husband and I had so much fun attending a public event in the winter a few years ago at Suri Fina Alpaca Farm; I love that you host events for the public! Has an event in the past stuck in your mind the most? And are there any events in the future you’d like to tell us about?

I’m so glad you enjoyed your visit to the farm. We always host a free event on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. It is fun to see families spending time together and making memories here at the farm.

Our signature farm experience is called our Alpaca Meet & Greet. We learn about the alpacas, how to interact safely with them, we feed the alpacas, take instant photos and selfies, and then walk with them up to their grazing pasture. It is about an hour long experience and is great for all ages. We have this tour available Thursday-Saturday during the warmer months.

Currently folks can book these through October on our website (we do need folks to book 24hrs in advance). We also host some artsy type workshops and events on the farm.

Sept 28 is an ECO-Print workshop where a local flower farmer is helping make flower prints on silk. And then October 12 the same farmer is showing us how to make dried flower wreaths. All of the information is linked on the Experiences page of our website.

The best way for folks to keep up to date with events is to subscribe to our farm mailing list, I try to get emails out in time for folks so they can take advantage of what we have to offer.

People tell me that they love our farm, that it feels really good here, and has good energy. I’m going to keep on going and keep that positive energy going into the future.

Discovering Voyageur Tattoo Co | Q&A

Every journey has its beginning, and in this section, you’ll be able to see the artistic start of Voyageur Tattoo through the thoughtful words of Kyle James. Then hang on for some more remarkable answers to artistically curious questions as we hear from Kyle and Charlie.

With every tattoo shop I’ve been to, there’s an undertone vibe, a culture if you will. What would you say is the culture of Voyageur Tattoo Co?

The culture here is a friendly, fun, curious and adventurous feel. We curate the items and artwork in the shop with certain colors and feelings in mind.

We try to keep lights low and colors inviting and calming for the clients who are generally a little nervous to begin with.

The easier we can make that experience for them, the better.

Voyageur Tattoo Co. has an adventurous, wanderlust-like feel. It’s attention-grabbing and makes me want to book an appointment ASAP! How did the shop’s name and aesthetic come about?

Voyageur is named after Minnesota’s only National park. Charlie was born and lived near the park and spend many summers swimming the lakes, picking blueberries on the islands, fishing and canoeing its waters, and spending lots of time with her family in the unabashed wilderness. They even owned a cabin within the park that’s still there, but was eventually absorbed back into the park.

National parks are very important to us both and we spend a lot of our time in them. We tried to bring a part of that into the studio with us, with Taxidermy and paintings of some of our favorite spots.

Natural light streams in through the skylights and makes it feel like you might be under the canopy of a conifer forest.

Are there any tattooing or tattoo shop misconceptions that you’d like to debunk, or perhaps tattoo shop etiquette that you’d like to address?

We’re not scary, we promise.

Even though our hands and necks are tattooed, we’re very gentle, friendly souls that love making art.

As far as etiquette goes, arrive on time, be clean, not smelly, and please be respectful of our art and our time. Being nice goes a long way, and please tip your artist if you can.

What’s in store for Voyageur Tattoo Co.’s future? Are there any events or news you’d like to share?

We’re very comfortable where we’re at and have no plans on moving or changing anything major.

We’re always adding art, making improvements here and there, but nothing major coming down the pipe.

We love our neighborhood and our lovely cafe that’s downstairs.

Q&A With Kyle James at Voyageur Tattoo

It’s incredibly valuable to have people in our lives who believe in us and our talents; as someone who had an enriching relationship with their art teacher in school, is there something that they told you that still rings in your ears today?

The most important thing I learned from my art teacher is the value of hard work and dedication to a project, not being afraid to fail at something new and exploring new and weird ways to create art that aren’t conventional.

The American Traditional style is iconic, to say the least; what drew you to this style in particular, and why is it your main focus?

American traditional has that bold, clean style the same way bold design draws your eye. I studied graphic design in college and the simplicity of the best designs is reflected in this style of tattooing. Taking away as many elements as possible while still conveying what it needs to.

As an artist transcending beyond the ‘typical’ canvas, you also enjoy woodworking and blacksmithing! Do you notice any techniques or mind frames that are in common amongst tattooing, woodworking, and blacksmithing?

All of my hobbies outside of tattooing are rooted in old ways.

New techniques might be more efficient, faster, but they’re not always better. The experience of hand planing a slab of cedar, or cutting dovetails into a perfectly straight edge is quiet, you can hear the fibers of the wood being cut or peeled away as you work.

This is a very reflective and spiritual feeling for me, and when I get to work on beautiful art on some amazing friends and clients I get that same peaceful feeling.

When asked about your most rewarding or challenging tattooing experience, is there a specific tattoo that comes to mind?

Large scale work is always a challenge, between designing the elements, laying them out, figuring out the shape of the body part to match and then executing all of those elements on an actual human body is extremely difficult and rewarding at the same time.

Anything worth doing has an element of difficulty.

Q&A With Charlie James at Voyageur Tattoo

I noticed that painting is mentioned in your ‘About Us’ section on the Voyageur Tattoo Co. website, are there other artistic mediums that you enjoy! Do you find that elements and skills of each one bleed into the others?

I have enjoyed drawing and painting, typically acrylic painting, since I was a child. I’ve also always enjoyed writing and over the years have dabbled in jewelry making.

As life has changed, I find myself doing more art with my daughter, like coloring, kids project/art kits and some collage work like when we made our 2024 “Dream boards” for New Years.

It has been fun to get back into some of those versions of art that I probably wouldn’t have done again if not for having a kid in the home. It’s a good reminder to enjoy my art and that art doesn’t have to be sellable or “advanced” to be meaningful in my life.

What is something from your apprenticeship that you’re grateful you learned, and what would you have told yourself before diving in?

That simple doesn’t mean easy. I use to over-design or add too many elements to my art, whether that was tattoo designs or other art mediums.

I thought by adding more textures or details, it meant it was better. While learning to refine my tattoo designs, I came to understand that there is a lot more skill in knowing how to portray the subject matter in a way that is clear, readable and will age better on the skin.

Something I would tell anybody before diving into a career in tattooing, is that it is a lot more than being a good artist.

Interpersonal skills, being self-driven/motivated and organized are just as important in being successful. You also have to put your ego aside. There’s a lot to learn from those around you and always ways to improve your craft.

Is there a tattooing style that you’re interested in honing in on in the future?

I’m approaching my 4th year of tattooing and have found myself being most excited about American Traditional. There’s something about the timelessness of the designs and how well they hold up over time if done well. When drawing designs or painting, I find myself most inspired by nature. Floral, animals and other plants are what I tend to draw the most.

What has been one of your most memorable tattooing experiences?

I have had the opportunity to tattoo many cool subject matters or check off many of those classic trad designs but the times that stick out as the most memorable are the connections I have made with the clients.

I had a client that use to be a social worker and was currently a foster parent, like myself and the conversations we would dive into came at a time that I needed that. They were deep, personal and
more like a therapy session for the both of us.

That’s not the only time someone I have just met at the beginning of a session has become a friend or someone where we talk like we’ve known each other for a long time.

Kyle and I have stayed at client-that-have-becomes-friends’ cabins and have made many great memories over the years outside of tattooing with all sorts of folks we wouldn’t have met otherwise.

Meet Kyle | A Lifelong Love for Art
Hi, I’m Kyle James, a tattoo artist in Duluth, Minnesota. From a young age, I was encouraged to draw—so much so that I was scribbling on paper before I could even walk or talk. Art was a constant presence in my life, with family and friends always gifting me art sets and kits for birthdays and holidays. It just became a natural part of who I am.

In high school, I was fortunate enough to have an art teacher who really believed in me. Kyle Clemons, my teacher, went above and beyond to ensure my success as an artist. He even dedicated his entire art budget to get me the supplies I needed. Honestly, I wouldn’t be where I am today without his support. My mom is also incredibly artistic—she’s amazing at drawing and painting. Sometimes, I think she’s even better than me!

Meet Charlie
My fiancée, Charlie, is not only my life partner but also my apprentice at Benchmark Tattoo. When we first considered working together, we knew we could handle being in the shop together, but there was a question of whether we could make it work with me as her boss and mentor. It’s a different dynamic, and we had to learn a lot about communication.

Through the apprenticeship, we’ve grown as both partners and colleagues. Not only do we work together at the shop, but we’ve also tackled numerous projects around our home, like remodeling. We have a great working relationship, and honestly, we’re together pretty much 24/7—and we love it. We don’t get tired of each other at all.

Our love story actually started on Tinder. I wasn’t actively using the app, but my sister convinced me to check it out one day. Charlie was the first person who came up, and my sister pointed him out, saying, “Charlie, look at this guy and his cute dog—he’s perfect for you!” As it turns out, he swiped up—my super like.

Our first date? A bit of a disaster. But even after all the mishaps, we both walked away liking each other, and the rest is history.

Meet the Animals
Our home wouldn’t be complete without our furry (and feathery) companions. We have three dogs—two Springer Spaniels and a Cocker Spaniel-Poodle mix. The smallest one might not look tough, but don’t let that fool you—she can be pretty mean!

We also have around 20 chickens outside, along with another 20 to 25 chicks upstairs in the brooder. When we bought this place, it just felt right to expand our little farm. With a bit of acreage, it made sense to bring in some animals. We started with goats, including Stella, an older goat I bought back in high school. She came from my parents’ house and has been with me for years.

Hobbies Beyond Tattooing
While tattooing is my passion, I have a few other hobbies that keep me busy. Woodworking is a close second, and I’m also really into blacksmithing. My workshop is filled with more reclaimed steel than I know what to do with—people are always giving me their scrap metal. And honestly, I’m not complaining; it keeps me inspired and ready for my next project.

How Do I Make A Tattoo Appointment at Voyageur Tattoo?

What Should I Do for Tattoo Aftercare?

Being properly informed about Tattoo Aftercare is vital for both the longevity of your tattoo and your safety.

What better place to receive that information than Voyageur Tattoo? This information is provided on their website underneath the ‘Aftercare‘ tab.

It’s also stated that paper instructions will be provided at the appointment, and if there is a medical concern during your healing process getting in touch with your Doctor is recommended. But, if you have any questions regarding the tattoo in a non-medical manner, calling your tattoo artist is encouraged.

1. Remove bandage after a minimum of 2-4 hours. Bandage can be left on overnight if the tattoo was done later in the day.
2. Gently wash your new tattoo with warm to hot water and non-scented antibacterial soap, then rinse with cool water.
3. Pat dry with a clean paper towel and let air dry.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 for the first two-three days. Day three proceed to steps 5 & 6.
5. Place a small amount of ointment (I recommend Hustle Butter or Organic Coconut Oil) in your fingertips and gently work the ointment into the tattoo. note: please ONLY use approved aftercare
6. Please continue steps for approximately 2 weeks, washing twice a day and applying aftercare ointment 2-3 times a day.

Where Can You Visit The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park?

The Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, the largest Michigan State Park, is closest to the town of Ontonagon, Michigan.

A Michigan Recreational Passport or Entrance Fee will be required upon arrival to the State Park, and it’s important to double-check the Porkies State Park website to see if there have been any closures or updates to park amenities that may affect your travel plans.

How much does it cost to go to the Porcupine Mountains?

To visit the beauty of the Porcupine Mountains on Lake Superior you’ll need to either purchase/have a Michigan Recreational Passport or pay for a One Day pass. Both options can be purchased at the State Park, and the option prices vary depending on if you’re a Michigan resident or not.

Rest assured that your money is being used for a variety of wonderful projects and upkeep when you purchase a Park Pass from the Michigan State Park system.

• Keeping the forest campgrounds, hiking trails, recreation areas, and boat launches in the best condition for optimal enjoyment for outdoor lovers such as yourself
• Upkeep for outdoor facilities and Historic sites that are in the State Park
• 10% of the funds that come from Park Passes are granted to the cause of local park improvements and future park projects

Let’s take a peek at the Park Pass fees! For Michigan residents, vehicle passes can be purchased at the time of license plate registration or a Commercial Daily Pass may be obtained at the Park site. Exemptions for the State Park fee include visitors who enter on foot or by bicycle, School buses and public transit buses, and snowmobiles.

The Wonder of Lake of the Clouds

One of the most enjoyed pieces of this sensational State Park puzzle for visitors near and far is the breathtaking view of Lake of the Clouds. A vision of inspiration and beauty, visitors can look through telescopes or simply take in the view of its vast forest and peaceful lake view.

With accessible viewing areas and access to the viewpoint for Day Pass visitors, you’re bound to have a peaceful moment with this spectacular view. And while you’re looking out, you can bring up this interesting fact/story.

According to local history, a B-17 crashed just South of the Lake of the Clouds in 1944 due to an engine fire. With a sigh of relief, the people on the aircraft jumped and safely landed before the crash. In the town of Silver City, where the survivors walked to after safely landing, there is an eminence of this unique story in the form of the original B-17 plane propeller.

Legend has it that there are fragments of the plane lurking in the deep forest of the Porkies. What makes a State Park ascend to the next level of awesomeness? An entangled woodland legend! Hikers and visitors are not encouraged to go looking for these supposed dislocated pieces of the B-17, instead let it fill you with happy camper glee that it may just be real!

A set of adventures the Porcupine Mountains have seen come through time and time again, and who I happen to know well, are my in-laws!

My wonderful Mother-in-Law, Jeanne, took the time to talk with me and answer a few questions about their experience in the Porcupine Mountains Wilderness State Park, the beauty of the Lake of the Clouds, and the joy of being on Lake Superior.

If you’re a curious explorer who’s itching to put this Michigan State Park on your bucket list, reading this Q&A can be a great jumping-off point to launching into your research and planning.

The Porcupine Mountains are notorious for their beauty and solitariness; what brings you and your Husband back again and again for more adventures in that vast wilderness?

It’s like going to visit an old friend, comfortable, familiar, and welcoming but always learning and seeing something new making new memories. The clear waters and undeveloped landscapes are good for the soul.

I’ve heard you mention before that being near or on Lake Superior is your happy place, why is that?

Looking at that beautiful water reminds me how small we really are compared to the vastness of nature. My problems seem smaller too.

When you think about your time in that incredible mountain range, is there a memory that stands out to you?

I love hiking the Escarpment trail. It runs along the ridge of The Lake of the Clouds. The views are spectacular.

I also really love the hike that runs along the Little Carp River. If you can handle the mosquitos, the sounds and sites of the river flowing to the lake are amazing.

If you were to give some advice to an adventurous hiker or a happy camper who is curious about checking out the Porkies, what would you tell them?

Ok, time to get serious.

Do your research, understand the adventure you are taking and know your limits.

Remember if you’re hiking an in and back trail, the back is always tougher than the in.

Safety first. Take plenty of water, snacks, basic first aid supplies, and proper clothing.

“Absolutely gorgeous! Near by beach with sand and rocks. The camp host were really friendly with great coffee that got ya up and going! Great little shops close by for souvenirs, ice and wood. So much to do in nature that I couldn’t do it all in a week. My favorite experience was playing the disc golf course and walking up half of the ski hill on 16, created an amazing view of the Aframe and Lake Superior!”

It’s always special to know more about the origin and the talent behind such a marvelous establishment, and it was an absolute treat to have the opportunity to chat with Jackie! The baker, decorator, and visionary for Cookies in the Valley. Read along and discover the inspiration and beginnings of this sweet-treat dream!

Taste and smell are often associated with memory. Can you recall a time when baking began to call to you? Did someone special to you introduce you to baking, or did you happen upon it on your own?

I have always enjoyed baking, I can’t remember one specific memory that started it all but since I was a young girl I loved being in the kitchen and reading cookbooks and trying different recipes

Cookies in the Valley is such a sweet name; how did you come about landing on that one? Were there any other contenders?

Cookies in the Valley came to me for a possible idea when I was trying to come up with a name and I wanted to incorporate “me” into the name; the Marengo Valley is important to me because it’s where my husband and I started our life as husband and wife and where we’ve brought our children home to and where we continue to raise them.

I have a lot of memories in my childhood of visiting my great grandparents in Marengo with my grandma and it’s always been a place I’ve loved so it was important to incorporate it into the name of my cookie business.

There weren’t any other contenders because nothing else felt “me” and once I came up with Cookies in the Valley, I knew nothing would compare to it or be more “me” of a name

On Cookies in the Valley’s Facebook Page, you’ve mentioned your lovely family; do your kiddos ever help you with the inspiration for your cookie designs or get to help you with making the cookies?

My kids definitely help with inspiration for cookie designs and flavors (my oldest son has some flavor requests for me to try so we will see if they make it to the official list of flavors or not).

My kids don’t help make the cookies, mostly for sanitary reasons but also because it’s my quiet time in the midst of raising young children- when I am in my cookie room, it’s a way for me to relax and be creative.

Did you face some challenges in the early stages of learning how to decorate cookies? What’s a piece of advice you would give an aspiring cookie decorator?

Early on (and still to this day) I struggled with thinking my cookies were worth anything or that anyone would really want to buy them. There’s so many other talented bakers out there that it took quite a bit of convincing from others that my cookies had any sort of value.

One piece of advice I would give an aspiring cookie decorator would be to practice, practice, practice and then practice some more. Work on developing your own recipes and menu and find your own niche within this huge community of cookie decorators, some bakers may excel in some areas and you may excel where they struggle and that’s perfectly okay.

To me, I think recipe development is the utmost important part of getting started; oftentimes when people think of decorated cookies they think they will be hard and crunchy but not all cookies are created the same- a thick soft cookie is an absolute must for me so I’ll only add a flavor to my menu if it meets my standards.

When you’re in your baking and decorating mode, do you listen to music or a podcast? What’s your baking station like?

My baking and decorating days are mostly spent in silence; almost always you can find my decorating or baking during naptime or when my kids are in bed for the evening and adding in any sort of noise clutters my brain and makes it not as relaxing so I prefer the quiet. If I do turn on anything to listen to while decorating it is a Gordon Ramsey show of some sorts or 90s/early 2000s country.

If someone wanted to place an order, how should they go about doing that?

I take all my orders thru messages on my Facebook page, I’m currently booked thru September (2024) for custom orders but I will have a back-to-school presale opening up mid August (2024) so people can keep an eye out on my Facebook page for that

The Rich History of the Lake Nebagamon Dairy Queen

A collection of wholesome Summer stories, with this historic DQ at the center stage of those memories, could quickly fill more than one volume of a book. And what a sweet read that would be!

From the happy campers of Camp Nebagamon taking their weekly trips into town to grab their DQ cravings to Life Guards catching a refreshing snack after their scorching hot shifts, to folks who just like a classic hot chocolate sundae much like the original owner, Evelyn Kangas Johnson, the memories are endless when it comes to the Lake Nebagamon Dairy Queen. But where did it all begin?

According to an interview with the Superior Telegram and Bonnie Nepstad, who carried on the legendary establishment in 1996, this DQ was brought to life with the sweet ambitions of Evelyn and Eric Johnson. A married couple dwelling in Chicago at the time who moved to the Lake Nebagamon area in the early 50s.

Moving back to Evelyn’s hometown with the purpose of assisting her Mother, the couple, Evelyn in particular, missed the frozen goodness of Dairy Queen so much that they dreamed up their very own right there in the Northwoods.

After picking out the perfect spot, a view of Lake Superior, and close to other Lake Nebagamon favorites, the couple established Lake Nebagamon’s first DQ. Little did they know the incredible impact this place would have, and not to mention the historical significance! 

Recognized by the Dairy Queen franchise itself, the Lake Nebagamon Dairy Queen may just be the oldest in Wisconsin! Well, how about that? You can stand in line to get a delicious treat of choice and know that you’re standing on historical grounds! For this reason, the stronghold hasn’t changed its exterior one bit, providing a perfect nostalgia trip during every visit.

The Johnsons were the hardworking hands behind this well-loved Ice Cream spot for many years. As mentioned before, ownership may have changed in 1996, but the love that pumps through those ice cream machines and fryers hasn’t faltered one bit.

Although the Lake Nebagamon Dairy Queen is up for sale again as of 2024, it remains in operation and is still helping to serve up smiles and memories to those who come from near and far. Perhaps it’s the nostalgia talking or the love and magic of being on Lake Superior, but without a doubt, there’s a strong future for the continued joy and memories that come out of this legendary DQ.

Frankie’s Pizza is located on Lake Shore Dr East (AKA US Highway 2); you can’t miss it as you’re driving down the road and you see it’s wooden exterior and that classic Frankie’s sign. This place may not look super big from the outside, but don’t let looks deceive you. There’s cozy booths and long tables, and even outdoor seating in the back during summer months, so they can easily accommodate a family meal or a get together with friends.

The Frankie’s Pizza Experience

Frankie’s Pizza is a corner stone in many family dinners that have taken place on Lake Superior, and my family is one of them. From as far back as I can remember, we’ve scooted in our chairs and enjoyed the one-of-a-kind Frankie’s Pizza in an atmosphere of laughs and wholesomeness. If I close my eyes, I can smell the pizza toppings and hear the arcade games catch phrases; Frankie’s is like your pizza home away from home.

I have a few favorite memories from this establishment; one from my childhood, and the other with my Husband years and years later.

I was fascinated by jukeboxes and music when I was growing up, especially classic rock. I can remember using the few dollars I had to play a few of my favorite Beatles and Elton John songs, the restaurant fairly empty aside from our big family, and suddenly the head cook popped out. He asked who was playing the music, and in my shyness I told him it was me. To my surprise, he gave me some more money and told me to keep on playing the good stuff! Whenever I see a jukebox, I can’t help but think of that jazzy memory and Frankie’s Pizza still has a digital jukebox hanging on the wall for you to play some tunes & bring back some memories as well.

Another Frankie’s inspired memory I have is with my husband, my boyfriend at the time, on one of our very first Dawdles. It was his first trip to Ashland, so we had to stop at Frankie’s Pizza of course! We ordered a pizza to go, drove up to Washburn, and had a picnic on the beach. It was a perfect Summer day on Lake Superior.

And from our editor, Corey, comes this memory: “The round pizzas, cut criss-cross style into squares, were a staple in my family’s history in Ashland and on the road. After some of the family moved away from the Ashland area, my uncle would bring us ready-to-bake Frankie’s pizzas whether we were at the cabin in Minnesota or even all the way in California one time! Frankie’s is a source of comfort and memories for our family and a lot of others in the Ashland area. In fact, we just had a family get-together at Frankie’s this summer!”

The walls inside of Frankie’s may not be decked out with contemporary decor (we like the homey charm!), but if their walls could talk, they’d be decorated in hundreds of pure memories of laughter, celebration, togetherness, and darn good pizza.
