Coffee brings us together in ways we may not even realize over the steaming notes of roasted caffeinated delightfulness. If you think about it, how many content reunions or inspired conversations have happened in the company of a warm latte or the perfect macchiato over the great expansion of coffee’s existence? The number is unfathomable!

There’s a grandness, a culture if you will, that surrounds coffee and the energized deliciousness it brings to our tastebuds. Alas, that sense of community and coffee culture doesn’t start at the coffee mug. In fact, it begins with its roaster.

And Almanac Coffee is putting its good coffee vibes out in the Duluth coffee lovers scene and beyond.

“Such good local coffee!
I’ve had it every morning now for years, and there’s no going back.”

Aside from a snazzy name (Almanac Coffee sounds pretty wicked; we love a cool name from our Coffee Roasters in Minnesota!) and being a Duluth coffee roaster on Lake Superior, what is Almanac Coffee all about?

This fine roaster company serves its rich roasts in coffee shops in Duluth and beyond, such as Dovetail Cafe. It is one of my favorite cafes in Duluth and just a fabulous place to feel a real sense of community and contentment during bustling, busy days.

Straight from their website, here’s what this wonderful coffee roaster company stands for in their own well-thought-out words:

At our core, we are an independent, family-owned micro-roastery based in Duluth, Minnesota focused on seasonal, single origin coffees. We work directly with coffee lovers, farmers, importers and wholesale partners throughout the Midwest to curate special selections of coffee that are traceable and taste amazing.

Because of its outstanding philosophy of working with ethical sources and partnering with suppliers, Almanac Coffee has a few powerful and unique qualities that’ll make you feel proud to pour a cup of its brew or order a cozy oat milk latte (Guilty, my favorite) from Dovetail Cafe. Let’s take a peek below to learn more about its philosophy!

Almanac Coffee | What’s Brewin’?

From their mission statement and to a testament to their deep passion for ethically sourced quality coffee, their sourcing methods center around a few profound actions.

Part of ethically sourcing your product is having a relationship with the farmer/transporter and not having a jumble of ‘middlemen’ with whom you have no real relationship. You don’t know their company methods and if they align with your own. This is precisely why the goal and action of having meaningful relationships with their suppliers were taken with this MN local coffee roaster.

Called ‘Single Origin,’ their coffees come from Farms and Cooperatives, where long-term relationships are built and strengthened with each order. In addition to having those meaningful relationships, they are also straightforward about sourcing coffee that aligns with stern environmental, quality, and social standards.

With this, the coffee roasts rotate and change due to which crops are in season, and this also gives other regions of coffee crops a chance to be showcased and enjoyed. I don’t know about you, fellow coffee lover, but I think this is pretty neat. Not only do you get the chance to try new and exciting flavors fairly often, but you can also take comfort in knowing that this company is making all the effort to source the coffee responsibly and has the farmers in mind.

“Almanac Coffee came into existence around the same time as the Duluth Folk School, now coming up on our four-year anniversary. And it was started by a very good friend of mine, Russell Crawford,” Almanac Coffee Owner Justin Wood said. “And I worked alongside of him for a number of years and recently had the opportunity to acquire Almanac Coffee. And it’s been a pleasure to pick it up and run with it.”

Where is Almanac Coffee Located?

This amazing coffee roaster is located inside Dovetail Cafe/the Duluth Folk School in the Lincoln Park neighborhood of Duluth, Minnesota.

This neighborhood has a little something for everyone: restaurants and adult drinking options, cutesy shops, a children’s museum, and an adorable park with seating. My husband and I saw a few birds and squirrels that seemed to like coming by the park, and they were quite entertaining to watch. I also love the mural that’s painted at the park and the feeling of being in a quaint setting that’s also in the middle of so many fun opportunities.

You can have a swell time in the Lincoln Park neighborhood! It’s a perfect place to dawdle for an afternoon!

Coffee, Learning, & Community at Dovetail Cafe/Duluth Folk School

This excellent coffee roaster we’ve had such a treat learning about is right inside, tucked neatly in the back, of Dovetail Cafe, along with the Duluth Folk School hanging out on the second floor of the cafe. When I went to the cafe for the first time and dawdled around with my husband there, it was inspiring to see the collaboration between the three, to say the least.

From the rich smell of roasted coffee floating about the entire cafe and being able to see the Almanac Coffee window in the back to climbing up the stairs and walking past the Duluth Folk School library, classrooms, and even the Voyageur Tattoo company that’s part of the Duluth Folk School community, there’s an immense amount of inspiration entwined in the wholesome vibe that flows about the cafe and its patrons.

If you’re looking for things to do while you’re in the Duluth or Superior area, I can’t recommend this awesome cafe, and it’s community enough. It’s become a spot I want to pop into each time I visit the Duluth/Superior area; there’s just something so warm, welcoming, and happy about it. I hope you get the chance to experience it for yourself and be sure to tell us all about it on our Facebook page!
